  1. Just won a pair of Walnut Heresy's on ePay for around $400. Item 5716121908 My plan is to use one of them as a center speaker between our walnut Belles. Is anybody out there looking for a single Heresy? If so, PM me. I'm in NC, the speakers are in AZ. Orin p.s. Please note that I'm not looking to make a profit on this transaction.

I ended up with the Parasound over the Acurus because I found a better deal for the prior. I also leaned toward the Parasound because many reviewers described it as giving a more warm sound than the Acurus. Many thanks for the replies. ---------------- I'm interested to know how it turns out - I'm in the process of making a similar decision. Thanks!
  3. I think I remember reading that article, way back when, though I was 15 years from becoming a Klipsch owner. Various versions of the Klipsch obituary cite the article: Many of the outrageous, but absolutely true stories of the eccentricities of Paul W. Klipsch were captured by author Jim Shahin in a 1989 interview for American Way Magazine The American Way website sells back issues (there is even an order form). Plus Jim Shahin still writes for them! (At least there's a May 2004 column from him on their site.) So I'd think that at least you could order a photocopy. Let us know if you have any luck! Orin
  4. I'm thinking about adding the Samsung 360. Can't beat the price and the features look pretty enticing. I've got 2 HD boxes now, both have their problems. Primary is a Mitsubishi SR-HD5 that's never worked quite right (component out is fine, but composite and s-video blank after about 5 minutes of use. Secondary is an older Panasonic with a really noisy fan that sometimes has to be powered on more than once to get a picture. The Samsung looks like it would work well as an input switch, given that my TV is also a Samsung that requires at least three keypresses to change inputs (no "next" button) anything would be an improvement. While my current HD set has only component as HD video inputs, my next set won't, and Samsung covers the bases pretty well with this box. Also, I briefly had a terrestrial HD Samsung reciever a couple years ago - great picture - and it simultaneously put signal out on component and coax. Nice for recording in SD while watching HD. It's my understanding that the 360 has the same feature regardless of output resolution selected. I've read a lot about people having problems with the 360, so I'm definitely going to buy locally, probably Circuit City because of their return policy. Worst case they hold my money for a few weeks and I'm out some time from messing with it. Orin
  5. Not sure how to start this post so I'll just dive in. Recently my wife and I brought home her late father's stereo equipment. The centerpiece is a pair of 1982 Walnut Belles, powered by a McIntosh MC 2205 amp fed by a matching vintage C32 preamp. The inputs include a McIntosh MC80 tuner, Denon DCD-1500 (sweet sound), and Nakamichi ZR-7 deck. He took great care of his equipment, there's hardly a scratch on any of it. Our first plan was to find a buyer for it, but my wife wasn't around when I brought the speakers home, so I rearranged them into our TV room on a "surprise trial basis." Fortunately for me (and my aching back) she found it to be a pleasant surprise! One Belle is on on each side of the 42" RP HDTV, with the rack of equipment to the left of the leftmost Belle. That plus a window to the right of the right Belle is the width of the room. The first step was hooking things up for 2 channel, and while one of the speakers sounded as good as anything I've ever heard, the other sounded just dreadful - my unklipschtrained ear couldn't quite tell, but my multimeter says there's a problem with the midrange/squawker. So it probably will be off to a local repair person I trust (unless I decide to deal with it myself, which probably is a question for a different forum). Anyway I feel like I should at least have the McIntosh equipment cleaned and checked, and we're getting new carpet in the room anyway. Assuming that all goes well with that, I feel like the next step is to find some complementary speakers and equipment to build for a 5 channel setup. My first thought is to find a single Heresy of similar vintage and finish for the center, perhaps on its side on a (sturdy!) shelf above the TV. Of course one problem there is that most sell in pairs, I'd have to either find a single or split a pair. So another option I'm considering is finding a KLF-C7. Any advice pro or con on either option (or other ideas) would be greatly appreciated. (A 3rd Belle is out of the question) Note that I haven't even considered rear speakers yet - they'll need to be small. Have a decent pair of B&W 300 bookshelves on hand, but don't think they're up to the task. And subwoofer is definitely a "down the road" purchase at this point, especially given that there is a "quiet factor" in our home after 8:30 PM, prime time for our movie watching. Of course there needs to be something to drive it all...and I'd really like to keep the McIntosh amp driving the Belles. I've picked up a Parasound preamp and processor (both 1500's) on ePay, and am thinking about a "classic" Parasound 3 or 5 channel amp to drive the remaining 3 channels. I think the advantage of a 5 channel is that I could use the remaining two to drive a pair of speakers elsewhere - but maybe this is another of those silly newbie ideas that should rightfully be shot down. On the input side I'm eventually going with a Denon 2900 for CD & DVD - Crutchfield is closing out "A" stock at $699. Not sure on the other inputs other grabbing digital audio from the HD/DirecTV box, though it's virtually been on its last legs since it was new (Mits SR-HD5) and probably should be replaced with something like the new Samsung box. If I can find one that isn't in the same "new" condition. Beyond that I'm not sure, though we really need any tuner to be AM/FM and my neighbor is already salivating over the cassette deck. I have a distinct feeling that in the end the rack can only be so high...and two amps add a lot of height! Any advice is appreciated (along with all the good stuff that's been posted here in the past!) Orin

How about no kids under 6 in 'R' rated films as to not bother other people. .com/idealbb/images/smilies/9.gif'] ---------------- Around here several theaters have a rule that no children under 6 are allowed into R rated movies in the evenings. Another theater has a "family night" with special showings on Monday evenings - parents are encouraged to bring their children no matter how small - and to remove them for a while if they go on a crying jag. I'm pretty sure that the movies selected aren't just kids movies, and very sure that they're not "scary" or R-rated. FWIW my son is 2 1/2 - definitely still not ready for the movie theater experience. Orin
  7. I won't even try to describe the style of They Might Be Giants, but the internet version of their "Dial-A-Song" service provides some decent examples (link below). They've also done some commercial and soundtrack work in the past few years - the theme song to "Malcom in the Middle" is theirs, they wrote the "Dr. Evil" theme song from "Austin Powers 2," and music for several Chrysler and Dr. Pepper commercials.
