Just because it goes against convention (s/s pre with tube power) doesn't mean to say it won't work. ---------------- Hmmm... Ok... now I'm really confused. It was my understanding from the vaaast reading I've done on this forum that in order to get the true rich sound, you would rather get a tube pre and ss amp rather than the other way around. I have been led to believe that the pre plays a much bigger hand by far in determining the quality and richness of the tube sound than does the amp itself. I'm trying to find the few posts that discussed this but can't seem to find them while at work. Am I wrong here? -F
  2. Hmmmm... Thanks guys... But I still have a couple of problems. A) How the heck do I audition the darn things?!?! I don't have a tube pre, so if I convince him to give them to me, I'd have to hook them up to my NAD SS pre, which would kill the sound. He's decided not to sell the CJ pre with it. Can't think of a great lowball offer that would keep the negotiations going to get me a good price. He he... Also, going to be going to Toronto in mid April. Would I be able to get Mc-30's there easily? I plan to be there for atleast 4 weeks. -F
  3. Hey there, I went, I saw... and was slightly disappointed. I have never heard the tube sound before, so I was paying close attention to the sound differences. And heard plenty. However, before I leave for work, I just want to give a very quick run down on what I felt. The uppers and mid were just glorious! No doubt. But the rest of the sound was just flat. And I don't mean just slightly lacking... because even I know that the bass response with tubes can be slightly lower compared to SS. No, this was just flat and a tad bit overpowering. Then I realized that he had biamped the Snells with the LF powered by a big Conrad Johnson amp (don't know the model number, but it's an old old one.) Also, the valves on the 30's weren't lighting up bright at all. I don't know if they're supposed to, but there was one small tube on both amps (output tubes, perhaps?) that had a small, dim glow on the top. So the sound was nice, but a little stifled due to the terrible lower ends. What's the deal? I'm still tempted to pick them up, but I'm not quite sure if this is a good pair to buy. I wonder if they can be improved significantly by just changing the tubes. Help me out here, guys. Thanks, -F
  4. Actually quite excited. In about an hour and a half, I'm going to go listen to this tube sound that you guys keep talking about for the first time. Have been looking for a nice tube amp for a long time, but couldn't quite risk just buying one if I didn't like the sound. And in Pakistan, this technology is not popular enough for the neighborhood audio store carrying a demo amp for auditions. So anyway, I'm going to go audition a pair of MC-30's paired with a Conrad Johnson pre (that I posted about earlier). The setup will be auditioned on a nice pair of Snell 4 ohmers, so I don't know if I'll get a real idea of what they would sound like on my Khorns. Part of me is excited as heck while part of me hopes I hate it. Can't afford to really really want them at this time. Wish me luck!! -F
  5. Hey there, I'm getting a pair of (apparently) nice MC-30's with new tubes and spares (don't know the tubes) paired with a Conrad Johnson pre (don't know the model number yet). Apparently, it's all in good condition, and the tubes are new. Couple questions: Will the Mac gear and CJ pre make a good combo? And 2, if it's all in good condition, is it a decent price at about $2,300? Quite excited about finding some tube gear in Pakistan... going to go see it... just need some info from you guys first!!! HELP! -F
  6. Hey there, This is nothing to do with 2-channel, but last night on American Idol (yes, I watched it... move on! ) one of the guys sang that song, ".... soothe my soul, I wanna get lost in the Rock and Roll and drift away..." It's killing me... what song is that and who's it by? Please help. -F

  8. Max, Sounds cool! And don't listen to the others... I, for one, look forward to your posts, and the "long" description just leads me to click on the link just that much faster! More to learn. I don't know what the fuss is about?! I thought it was a foregone conclusion that source quality is first and foremost above anything else. And then you think about the speakers. I think Linn had it right from the get-go when they started to build their entire company around the source rather than anything else. I think that is why their uni-disk player now sells for over $4,500. Good for you, max. Taking the road less travelled. -F
  9. Hey there, If the door opens in the opposite direction, I think you have yourself a corner! Good luck getting the speakers. One question. Someone in this thread mentioned that they use a sliding glass door as a corner. My question is that don't you need a solid (concrete, wood, or particle board) wall as your corner. I understand that the speaker uses the corner as a bass extension. I would imagine if that were true, then glass would not do too good a job for that purpose. Also, doesn't it rattle something wicked? -F
  10. DeanG, How easy is it to update the caps? I have a '71 pair, and just recently bought it. They sound great as is, but I'm sure they need a little bit of TLC. Pictures if possible? Also, is it something that requires hardware talent, because I have none! -F
  11. ---------------- I must say, one of the things I've been impressed by the plasma screen with is its color fidelity and subtlety. On regular broadcasts and even on crxppy old VHS video tapes, the colors are marvelous. You see subtleties and gradations that you just didn't know were there before. DVD's look great, almost as good as HDTV itself. I don't know whether LCD and DLP screens perform likewise, but the plasma is something. Sort of like a video Klipschorn. ---------------- Heyyy!!! "Visual Klipschorn!" I like that! DTL, you may have created some Longo's lingo here. A porsche roadster is an automotive Klipschorn? I'm sure it could be used to describe all sorts of superlatives, eh? Congrats on the wonderful setup! Happy for you. Relax, plug in something nice, and click away! -F
  12. Wow! That sounds a lot like some of the Pakistani companies that I work with! Especially the bit about not being in any hurry to produce your order once they have your money! Funny.... sheds a whole different light on things! -F
  13. ---------------- Had it been in my budget I would consider auditioning it - but as very little of my vinyl is really clean I am not sure how it would cope. ---------------- Maxg, Probably not very well, as the tiniest, microscopic speck on a cd tends to affect the playing of the cd. Likewise, I can imagine the groove being filled with the same sort of dust creating havoc in the actual reproduction by laser. I'm really curious to know how the "scritchy crackling" sound on most LP's would sound when a laser is reading and playing it. -F
  14. Boomac, I had posted about this earlier. In last month's Stereo Review (I think) there was a review on, I believe the company's name is ELS's new digital turntable. The review was HIGHLY favorable, thus prompting me to post along the same lines as you. But it's clear even from that stunning review that the benefits are by far outweighed by the drawbacks. And the 12,500 British pound price tag also doesn't help the case. Personally, neither the concept nor the technical aspect appeals to me. I feel the charm of the TT lies in its "analog-ness" and a good thing should be left as it is. It feels like this thing has been developed more for the people who like talking about how they have the latest technology, and don't understand the basic concepts of the technologies involved. Regards, -F
  15. Max, Woah! Been travelling for a few days, and I nearly missed your reply to my post. Don't get me wrong. Amused to Death is a phenomenal album. Especially the title track. Deep, meaningful, critical, yet stunningly musical. However, having been a PF fan for years, and having every single thing they ever put out while Waters was still there (can't stand Momentary Lapse, Division Bell, etc.), I have to say that Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking really takes me back to his Pompeii and Atom Heart Mother days and even The Wall. The dreams and hallucinations that he draws out really shine this album as a VERY personal piece for him, outlining his own personal troubles and insecurities, reminiscient of how The Wall gave him a chance to comment equally on wars and parenthood. Putting all that to music that sounds that good is an achievement that is hard to match. I also think that DSOTM is a GREAT album, but I think that they have done much better uncommercially in albums like Wish You Were Here and Animals. Just my views. Artto, great pics. Most impressed. Like Maxg said, you ARE my new hero! -F
  16. Hey there, A strange problem has surfaced during my audition. It freaked me out a little bit, but when I set the balance all the way to the left channel, my left KHorn started crackling. Sounds almost like it does when speaker wires cross. Checked all my cables, and it was to the point where I had eliminated it down to either the speaker or the amp. Turns out thankfully that it's the amp. The thing is, though that it works perfectly when the balance is set in the middle. The price and this factor are quickly making me decide not to buy this amp. I'm hoping that this is a simple thing that I can fix up myself, like carbon collection or something. I love the sound, but it might not be worth it. Any help would be appreciated. -F
  17. Artto, Roger Waters?!?! You met Roger Waters?!?! He seems to have just disappeared. After his masterpiece of an album, "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking," he put out one not so great album, "Radio K.A.O.S" and then a semi decent one, "Amused to Death." Such talent, no new stuff?! Anyone have any news? -F
  18. See that little description under my name? It says Newbie... Hence you must forgive what seems like a stupid question... Err... Ahem... What is Redbook? Embarassingly yours, -F
  19. Tony, Thanks for the help... Much appreciated. I picked it up to audition the darn thing (how I convinced him, I don't know but hey! I did ) I like it. The bass is definitely very, very tight. I am also having the volume problem, but I think that I can live with it for now because the room that I will eventually put the speakers and amp in is quite big. Thanks a lot for the price indication. The unit is (apparently) like new, but I am going to try to talk him down to about 1700. If yes, then I'll keep it, otherwise I'll be Mac Amp-less yet again. Thanks for the help, friend. -F
  20. Hey guys, Just got news of availibility of a floor model MA 6400. How is it? I wanted to hook it up on my Khorns, because I can't for the life of me find any good bloody tube amplification in Pakistan!! Sick and tired of looking, but that's another story completely. The price that I'm being quoted is just around US$ 2,000. Methinks the price to be a bit on the higher side, although the piece is actually flawless in appearance. Remote, manual, box and all are intact. Wanted to know if anyone has any experience using it, and if so, what should I expect with my horns once it's hooked up? Thanks for the help... I need to decide immediately, hence the urgency. -F
  21. Lynnm / Artto, Interesting that this keeps popping up. My questions is this: Why? Why would a company put finances behind this sort of technology? I don't have a turntable yet, but have been looking into a good one for some time now. And from what I've seen / read / researched, I can't imagine there being ANY market for a digital table. I think even if the price was reasonable, I would go out on a limb and say that these companies would be hard pressed to generate any significant sales volumes. Isn't the longevity of the TT based on its analog charm? Or am I missing some basic truth here? -F
  22. Hey there! Interesting. In the latest issue of HiFi World, there's a review of ELT'LT-2XRC, a laser eye based Turntable. From what I've understood from the story, this model has finally overcome the inherent technical hinderances of using a digital media (the laser) to read an analog media (the grooves in an LP). Suffice it to say that the summary of the review states: "Nothing less than a seminal technological and manufacturing development." Of course, there are tons of problems with the technology, not the least of them is the fact that the resulting sound is not nearly as good if the LP is even slightly dusty. I haven't really checked out the sites, but two addresses for more information are: www.laserturntable.com and www.laser-vinyl.com. Is this really new stuff because I haven't heard of it. Don't know about you guys, but it seems a doomed-from-ground-zero effort to provide a new face to a technology that's well-settled in already. And to tag a price of 12,000 pounds to it doesn't seem the best of business decisions to me at all. Maxg, is this what you were looking for, perhaps?!?! -F
  23. Dean, Just noticed the photographs you posted have false corners. Does the bass lack in this setup or is it just as good as running in actual corners. I would imagine the bass would be slightly hindered because of having (what looks like) plywood instead concrete. -F
  24. Wow, I never realized that there were such varying opinions about these amps. And no, I hadn't heard about the "Flame" Linear bit. I still don't have a feel for how good or bad they sound, so I guess I will have to audition the components. More on that later. Other than this forum, whatever I read is filled with praises of the amps robustness, btw. Thanks for the input, people. -F
