well, i've been doing more dac 1 research. some claim it seems a bit thin on the low end, but most agree it is a superb dac. the jitter correction is also nice, so me using optical input shouldn't be an issue.
im really leaning toward it this benchmark, especially if i can come across more used ones in the $600-700 range (the one on a-gon will probably be sold by the time i make my final decision)
anyone have anything else they'd like to share on this topic?

that vda-2 looks interesting. i've heard good things about the vda-1 on headfi.
i know i shouldn't shop with the idea that price = performance in mind, but i can't help but think i can achieve better performance from a $600 used DAC (since that's what the vda-2 will be going for)
purchasing a used vda-2 obviously isn't an option since it won't even be out for another month.

so it's more of a studio DAC? you see, its going to be extremely hard for me to pick something because i'm just going to have to rely on word of mouth.

this isn't for a cd player. it is for my pc.
what price point should i be looking at for this to be a worthwhile upgrade in that case?
edit: i want to emphasize once again that i'm looking for a **USED** DAC, not brand new. i wouldn't expect anything spectacular at this price range if i was shopping new.

If the wife ever complained about the size of this speaker, you could always eliminate their need for a blow dryer and instead stand them in front of those bass bins with a heart-stomping beat
perhaps if i make a camp fire in the lf section it can be used as a hair dryer

the dac-1 is a bit over my $500 used pricepoint according to audiogon.
unless benchmark makes some other dac you had in mind

i have absolutely zero experience in this matter as to what brands are good, which are bad, and which are mediocre.
i'll probably be looking for something used in the near future for under $500.
i don't want to experiment with DACs that seem good on paper, but no one has ever tried before. i'd like to go with something proven good.
i'll only need two channels. it will need to have toslink input so i can use the digital out of my old av-710 (no sense in using the audiophile192 for digital out, that will be overkill).
lastly, i will be mating said DAC with my la scalas, so i'm going to assume something sterile or overly bright won't sound too good.
i'm purchasing this before a preamp because i feel for the price i'm paying, more improvement will be had through an external DAC than a pre. besides the fact that i don't exactly need a pre for my setup.

Bigger-----Reminds me of a fanatical tweaker named Enid Lumley who wrote in one of those whacko high-end magazines years ago. She came to the conclusion that your hi-fi sounds better if you're not in the room with it. Seriously.
there was a fellow on these forums who once claimed that certain speaker wire made his speakers sound better through walls than others. and only through walls.

I'd only use them in a very large room. To my ears, LS sound best at 25-40 feet. If a smaller room, I'd opt for the CW every time.

how does having the stacked bass bins sound? is it good for critical listening, or is the extreme height a major disadvantage for anything other than just blasting music? i ask beacuse it may be a fun project to create a second bass bin for the scalas when i have some more free time (and money).
well.. atleast i could get rid of my 6" risers
edit: and stacking my scalas ontop of another bass bin would look quite intimidating in this 11x11 room

I do have the extra Corns. What to do? Get a cheap, decent receiver for movies and enjoy a few explosions and gunfire, or bring them back upstairs and run them to my amp along with my KHorns and have 4 speakers on my stereo?

maybe his supposedly super rich parents bought him the speakers as a way to soothe his recent breakup with said girlfriend.
you should've asked for the corvette you supposedly have coming to you instead.
i don't see how you go from saying 1500 is way too expensive for belles and wanting beat up $500-600 cornwalls, to buying $1900 whatever speakers in less than a month.
