  1. this is an excel file that calculates to # of wires of a size to the size you want wirecalculator-1.zip
  2. Hi Al....I realize the sim you did indicates poor results for a 16ohm woofer ....as I said I can't measure stuff but the 515B's sounded very good.... here are some specs I could find...not sure if this helps with any further simulations....thanks -Al Thiele-Small parameters Model Number: Xmax(inch) Re (ohms) Vd(cu. in.) Fs(Hz) Vas(cu. ft.) Ref(%) Qts Qms Qes Vid 515B 0.18 12.00 23.00 24.70 19.70 4.60 0.17 7.50 0.17 0.22
  3. I am using the ES400T and ES 5800 now with the University CW15 woofers set to 8 ohm (this woofer can also be jumpered to 16 ohm) in my Onken .... they sound excellent and I just had my Altec 515B in the cabinets and they sounded excellent....you will be fine....build away....
  4. AL, I was wrong. I have the W1508S woofers that are rated at 8 ohms. Will these work with the ES400 or do all of the values need to be changed (and to what values)? I need to build the ES400 netowrks because I am using a JBL 2470 and want to be sure that it can handle the task. hey there....I have built and have used both the ES400T and ES500T networks along with the ES5800 with a few different woofers other then my Belles...the other cabinets are Altec Model 19 and Onken (which are about 17ft3).... JBL 2205H, University C15W, Altec 416-8A and Altec 515B (16ohms) all with either 8 ohm mids like JBL 2470, Altec 292 and the AER, which are 16 ohm....all sound excellent....I don't think Big Al realize how "universal" all his networks are....I can't say I have measured anything but as AL also says "whatever sounds right is right"....or something like that.....Al - thanks again for making your designs public....
  5. I have used watco oil on all my stuff....the natural will turn slightly amber on unfinished wood....two coats of dark walnut on my horns and the second coat made the finish a little darker but richer....for a final topcoat I have used both tung oil and the watco natural satin wax and both are very good....the watco oil soaks into the wood....wipe on with a soft cotton cloth, wait a bit and wipe the extra off....wait 24 to 48hr (48 is better) and do it again....I tried the method of using a very fine sanding pad to apply the oil and that works pretty well too.... I like watco much better the stain but the finish colors are limited....
  6. hi Jeremy...I remember your build...in fact after seeing yours thats when my project started...so thanks..... yes Oris 200Hz horns with AER MD-3 drivers....I wouldn't say "replacing" yet.... although I am amazed by the sound from wood horn.... I will have to listen some more and set up the Oris again....if I had never heard the Oris and AER the wood horns would suit me just fine.... also if you were to compare my cost of materials for the wood horns (~$100) plus Altec 292 drivers (~$250) and the Oris/AER ($$$$.00)...well.... thanks -Al
  7. the fostex tweeters are very nice horn tweeter...I had used both JBL 2404 and 2405 prior and while those are very good too, I like the fostex... thanks -Al
  8. whole deal....using ALK ES 400xo's.....
  9. finally finished.....there was a couple of months with no work on them, but they were still a lot of hours
  10. how about Great Plain Audio ?...I know they specialize in Altec but I got some NOS replacement compression driver binding posts from them...
  11. your kidding right ?....how could a rebuild with any capacitor mentioned not sound better then this???
  12. holy sheep dip....looks like I got another project to do.....
  13. didn't use bending plywood, instead used 1/2" baltic birch strip cut 3/4" wide another.....
  14. well I need another horn like a hole in the head but couldn't help myself...I blame Jeremy and GotHover....took a little different approach as I do not want to paint these, but will use walnut veneer....
  15. jammin jersey has some.....at least you know they will work vs eBay crap shoot.... http://www.jamminjersey.com/speakers.php?prod=jblcomp
  16. hey JC ... I think the diaphragm diameters are different.....
  17. "Regarding cone drivers for mid horns - I like this idea and I'd like to read more about it. Does anyone here know of any information on the internet about using cone drivers in a horn for midrange in a hi-fi setting? " check out BD Design for some info.... http://www.bd-design.nl/ the new Oris 250 can be used with compression or cone drivers... I am using Oris 200 with AER MD3 drivers....I have used many combinations, Altec 811 w/ 902-8T and 511 w/ JBL 2470 and Altec 805 w/ 292-8A.... the phenolic diaphragm compression drivers sound best to me....the Oris are clearly the best I have used though, even with Fostex 206... Al
  18. the numbers are off as posted....see the attached plot....
  19. the GP drivers are very similar to the the Altec 292- 8A with the phenolic diaphragm....the 292-8A are rated 300hZ to 7000hZ....1.4 dia throat....I have used these drivers on some Altec 805 horns....what about using a mid-range driver like the JBL LE-5 instead of a compression driver ?....between this thread and Jeremy's thread this looks like a good Christmas holiday project....
  20. thanks Erik....I can revisit the ground and make sure it has contact with the plate....for some reason I remember the instructions mentioning to make sure the washer digs in....and I can twist the yellow wires for sure.....the paralleled 10000uF cap is a change from the 1998 schematic to the 2000....mine are 1999....when I order stuff I will get some....the RCA's look good....thanks for your advice -Al
  21. hi Mike....thanks....those are mine as built in Nov 99....not the "ultimate upgrade" but spec'ed with Allen Bradley resistors and Jensen caps.....walnut bases with 1/8" brass top plates.... a little bit of hum but otherwise excellent amps...my first set amps...
  22. hey Erik....check these out....Oris....joespride rig.... http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?spkrfull&1222612880 sweet....
  23. good morning Erik....parts list and schematic would be great......I did find a 1998 and a 2000.... mine look more like the 1998.... I would also be interested in the MQ grid choke if you can provide some information on that.....feel free to email me if its better to communicate off the forum.... thanks -Al alwsjr at gmail dot com
