    hd-dvd?

    >>>Thinking this may be for copyright protection purposes, no?<<< Actually, no. Its because the early discs were too sensitive to scratching. Someone just developed a new coating that is more durable, because no one was ready to commit to a consumer format that needed a sleeve. Consumers apparently want their discs naked. You are right that there are Blu-ray writers and burners for computers (mostly in Japan), but they aren't the finalized consumer media. Scott
  2. I soooo want to see photos of these. Anyone know where I can find pics? Scott

    hd-dvd?

Actually, I think Blu-ray is far superior technologically. Otherwise I fear we will get our main features in HD, but the extras at regular def, which I, for one, don't want. There's another, maybe more important issue that no one has brought up involving the switch to High Definition discs (at least, more important to audiofiles). Both DTS and Dolby hasve anounced hi-def audio encoding for these new formats (so we can get cd quality audio on each of our tracks...or at least a much better approximation thereof). I'm REALLY excited about getting good audio, becaue if I watch a movie after listening to music for a few hours, I can totally hear the discrepancy in bit rate. BUT... won't that mean we will all have to purchase not just new dvd players...but new recievers equipped to decode the new audio formamts? Or is this the kind of thing that can be upgraded with a software release? Or could the dvd player handle it (At least, until I save up another grand to get a new reciever)? These are things I would really like to know. So there you have it. I've seen mock-ups, and the movie experience really will be noticeably "better," but we might be looking at an even higher cost of upgrading if we want to take advantage of Hi-def audio encoding on our hi def discs (whatever format they may be). Scott P.S. I wouldn't worry too much about the price difference between Blu-Ray and hD-DVD; they will cost about the same either way for us, the question is whether Sony and other manufacturers will have to eat the cost initially until they ramp up production to appropriate economies of scale.
  4. Bchild, you have my condolences. Oddly, the Soundtrack I shop at (Soundtrack is part of the same company as UE) provides pretty stellar service. And they stock black subs...although as an RW owner I have to admit I don't know about their stocking habbits for the RSWs. Either wqy, I'd be livid in your situation. I was in a imilar situation with Best Buy, who in CO at least has attrocious customer service. I will never buy from them again, although I could in good conscience recomend the Soundtrack in Fort Collins and/or Denver to anyone in the area. I wonder if it has more to do with local management than with the overall corporate structure? Although I've had bad experiencnes at more than one BB, so I'm pretty sour on them. Either way, I hope you get your new sub pronto. Scott
  5. I'm using Monster Z1 cables on the mains and center channel. I'll update the sats when I move, but they don't play a huge role in listening to music anyways. I'm not using Monster for the optical or hdmi connection, because they are digital and are not as suceptible to quality control issues (the beauty of digital is that if a byte gets through, it sounds just as good, even if it was weaker because of interference). So, it seems to be between the Marantz SR7500 and the Rotel RSX 1056. The 1056 is a bit more expensive (street for the 7500 is like $900 with shipping), and I like the options and remote on the 7500, but I'm still hearing good things about Rotel sound. This is frustrating; I wish I lived in a real city where I could go demo them with similar speakers to my own...! Thanks for all the help, and if anyone has any more feelings on the 7500 vs. the 1056, let fly. Scott
  6. I'm starting to feel pretty good about the Marantz SR7500...Can I assume it's at least as good at music as the SR7400? I assume the THX certification hasn't hurt it any, although it's not that important o me (the extra power per channel is nice). Thanks! Scott
  7. "Do you think you might go seperates?" K, please help a neophyte audiophile. I have a decent understanding of the phsics of sound, and how electrical and magnetic forces work to produce it. I have a decent understanding of recievers. What ARE seperates? I know they are a well regarded high end deviece, but do they substitute for a reciever? How do they work? Is there a 5.1 surround version available in the $800-1,200 range? And would they be better than a similarly priced reciever? Thanks for taking pitty on my ignorance. Scott
  8. Does you sr7500 run hot? I've heard some complaints that the 7400 runs very hot, which isn't good. Also, no one has mentioned Pioneer Elites yet. Are they not very good for music? Scott
  9. Very hard to find a NAD dealer compared to Marantz. Ok, let me see if I have this straight; a decent Marantz, (like the SR7400) would provide a better music experience then a Denon 3805? And how about between Marantz and the NAD 773? Unfortunately the only physical dealer which carries klisch reference (and that's an hour drive) doesn't carry any of these brands except Denon, so it will be hard to hear them with my speakers prior to purchase. That's what I get for living in Wyoming...
  10. There is a used Marantz SR9200 on ebay right now in my price range...but I won't be able to get it right now. Would this be a good choice, or am I better off getting a new but less expensive model? And yes, I'll sell the Yahmaha when I upgrade. It's a HTR-5760. And I have to admit it does HT really well, and the music is the best I've owned...I just want more In general I'm hearing that the Marantz' models are the most "musical." And I assume they do HT ok, since that's usually less demanding acoustically? Thanks, and keep those opinons coming! Scott
  11. Hey everyone. I found out too late that my Yahmaha reciever isn't the best match for my Klipsch reference speakers (a tad birght). Also, the subwoofer-in port on the multi-channel input isn't working, which is a pain in the rear. So I want to upgrade in a month or so when I can afford to. I can spend maybe $800-$1200, so I want to know what you think is the best reciever. Priorities: I want at least 5.1 surround, since I have a home theater set up. I don't care about multi-zone capabiity too much, but I really want to get a reciever that's good for muscic (CDs and SACDs mostly). What do you guys say; what midrange surround reciever does the best job with music? Thanks for you opinions! Scott
  12. I got my RF-35s from SoundTrack (aka Ultimate Electronics), and they gave me a good deal since I was paying cash. That's niether here nr there since there aren't any near Charlette, but I CAN tell you that the reference series totally blows away the synergy series, especially if you can step up to the -35 series or higher. Especially for music, but even with DVDs the difference is very noticeable. Good luck! Scott
  13. The other thing I worry about is right now my home theater is on a bare wood floor, which I suspect is amplifying the subwoofer output quite a bit. I'll be moving in six months, and I wonder if the bass will seem underwhelming if I get it in a carpeted setting? Scott
  14. My sub isn't supposed to compensate for anything...lol. Seriousl, is there more detail in the larger sub? I can already knock pictures off the wall, and my left ear still smarts from when I turned the sub-level control on the side up too high while the new Eminem album was playing (sheesh that hurt!), so I don't care that much about sheer volume. But improved listening I do care about. Thanks! Scott
  15. Sorry for the cross post, but I thought maybe this is the place to ask. Is there a sonic advantage to the RW12? That is, I can already make myself bleed from the ear with m RW10 if I so desire, so what are the advantages of the RW12 besodes 3 extra decibels at 1 meter? I know it goes a bit lower, but will this be audible? Will it fill in the lower end better? Just trying to get some opinons before I decide whether to upgrade or not. Also, if I eventually want to move from the RF-35s into the RF-5/7 range, will it become more important to have the RW-12 to compliment them? Thanks! Scott
  16. I recently put together an rf-35 based home theater system, but I got the RW10. I am thinking about taking it back to "trade up" for the RW12, but I wanted to see what people thought the benefits were? The RW10 can go awfully loud, so I assume it isn't mere volume that makes the RW12 superior...does the larger driver produce a better tonal range in the low end? Please let me know if it's worth it. Thanks! Scott
  17. So...I'm really impressed with the specs on the new Ifi system, but...will if be available in something other than silver? Please? My girlfriend just got the special edition black ipod for Xmas, and it wouldn't look nearly as cool on a silver system as it would on a black one. Just curious, Thanks! Scott
  18. So, thanks to the excellent advice I recieved on this board, I got an rc-35 based 5.1 system today at SoundTrack. Got an excellent deal, but mostly I just wanted to say I totally love them. I had a set of Quintets before, so I knew it would be better, but I have a very large rooms (with lots of wood...it's possiibly the least acoustic room ever built). And it still sounds awesome. got them hooked up with my Monster z1 cables and ran the Yamaha auto-configure routines (I'll probably go back in a week and tweak the levels once I've had a chance to really break the speakers in). First thing I did was pop in my SACD version of Mozart's Requiem. Not suprisingly the rs-35s didn't hold up as well as the rb-35s would have, but who cares, because those main speakers created a HUGE soundstage that produced fantastic detail. It was the most emotional musical listening experience of my life. Then I popped in the dvd of Underworld (roomates choice), and it sounded fantastic. The rs-35s do a great job as rear surround speakers (no suprise, I suppose). I could never go back. So thanks Klipsch! And thanks to the forum members who helped out. I'm stoked! Scott
  19. Hmm...then perhaps I need to ask how much of a step down the rf-25 series is from the rf-35's...I don't think at this stage I could purchase both bookshelf and floorstanding speakers (and the new center) from the -35 series. The rear channels really only need to show up during dvd play back...is the RSX series so bad that they can't keep up, even as a temporary solution? Wall mounting bookshelf speakers wouldn't exactly be easy. Hmm, what about a pair of -15 bookshelves; would the be do alright for rear surround speakers in a -35 system? Thanks again to everyone who helps out. Scott
  20. Hey, everyone! I'm upgrading my quintet 5.1 surround system. I will probably go with the reference-35 series (with maybe RSX 5s as sats), as I can't really afford to move up my entire system a step beyond that. My theater is on one side of a pretty large room; I wanted to know how much of a difference I will hear getting the rf-35 floor speakers compared to using rb-35's? Also, what if I got rb-75's as the mains? I know they aren't a perfect sonic match for the -35 series, but how different are they? I'm not afraid of tweaking the output levels of my reciever if need be. Does anyone know how the rb-75's compare to rf-35's? Thanks so much for your help; this is a sizeable investment for me, and I don't want to be dissatisfied. Scott
