  1. The work looks great. Of course, I have questions. How thick is the plywood you are using, and where did you get your plans? I am so very impressed. I have been motivated to work in my own shop, and now see that I need to practice SO much more before I do anything even 1/10th this big. Please keep sharing those photos. 1BB
  2. I got the chance to start on my La Scalas this afternoon. I found that those odd little boxes were jacks that someond had installed to make access easier to the input. I do not know where they were connected, as they were both loose. I pulled the bottom off, and to my surprise the woofer looks fine. (no squirrels inside either) Now that I have broken the seal to the box, what do I use to seal it back up? And what do I use to clean that black tar-like stuff off of my hands??!? Anyway, with no OBIVIOUS physical damage, I guess that I now have to hook it up to a signal source and see and hear what the problem is. I was thinking of using an old low power stereo that I have just to give me something to listen to. Will that work? I think that it has perhaps 15w output. (sorry I just do not have much extra stereo stuff hanging around. I do have a 1950s era MacIntosh mono tube amp, but is at my mother's house somewhere, packed in a box.) Any other things that I could do to check, given I do not have any real tools in this area. Thanks again folks. You have been most helpful and friendly. 1BB p.s. I had photos, but they came in too big. I will work on them and see if I can make them behave. 1bb
  3. Hats off and a Big 'Thank You' for sharing your project. It has really helped me. I have a pair that I am going to try and rebuild. Just getting started, and the great details in your photos are wonderful! I have a million questions, but I will wait and watch, because many have been answered from just watching those that frequent these forum pages. Thanks again. 1BB

The dual jacks might be so the speakers could be biamped and provide a quick plug in for gigs. No wonder the drivers are torched! My suggestion- lovingly remove all speaker components and xover and pack em up to Bob Crites BEC. Michael ---------------- I think that you are correct in that the are to access the woofer directly. I have to laugh at the 'rock-n-roll' line because I got them from a church that was cleaning up a store room and no longer had room for a pair of speakers that did not work or sound very good. I gladly took them off of their hands. I do know that they were using them for sound effects more than anything else. Thunder and such during Easter plays for kids. (oh the pain!) I will try to take them apart this weekend and see what kind of damage has been done. For all I know, there could be a squirel living in the woofer chamber. (lol) Once I have them apart, I can discuss which option of rebuilding or upgading I will follow. Thanks again for all the good information. I even found a set of assembly drawings that will help me get into the box, with less damage than I might have otherwise. 1BB
  5. Hi, Another Newbie question: Is this a normal set up for a La Scala? Thanks. 1BB
  6. You would be surprised how well you can play most games using a dial-up connection. Assuming that you get better than the 16-23k line speed I used to get! 1BB
  7. Greetings, I will suggest my two current favorite P.C. games. First is a fantasy role-playing type of adventure game called Sacred. I think that the current version is called Sacred Plus. I love the graphics. It is an Isometric fixed view game. The animations and backgrounds are first rate, and it is fun. I like the on-line play also. The second game is not even out yet, but it features really good 3D graphics and is also a FRP style on line Multi-Player game. It is the game Guild Wars. I have played the preview events and found it to be a real feast for the eyes. It will be available on April, 28. As they say my $0.02 Good luck and enjoy! 1BB
  8. Greetings All, I wanted you to see the the 'Before' of what I am going to try to rebuild. Please note the additions the "additions" that were given to them in their former life. I will keep those handles and wheels, only until I have the insides the way I want them, and then they go away! Hopefully, with love, sanding and help from you good folks, They can again be things of beauty. Any comments are welcome. I can tell you now, that I will not torch or sell them. Thanks, 1BB
  9. Thanks. I will look for some serial number to see if that can be a help to you pro- types. I am getting excited at the thought of getting those units back into singing shape! thanks 1BB
  10. Hi, and thanks for the quick responces. I can see that there is some sort of rivalery going on here, and I guess that is a good thing. I will follow up with private messages, but I think a discussion of this kind of restoration could be benificial to many others. (and especailly to me, because I am so new here that a lot of the technical terms are out of my scope of understanding.) Thanks for your input. 1BB
  11. Greetings, I am a total newbie here, and I need a little guideance. I have just come into possesion of a pair of "old" La Scala speakers. They look pretty rough on the outside, and were given to me because they no longer made pleasing sounds. The boxes, I can fix. Nothing a little careful sanding and refinishing would not fix. The insides are a whole different ball game. From the descriptions of the "sounds" they created, I figure that the woofer needs reconing (or replaceed) and the other two horns need new diaphrams at the very least. The cross-over looks really old and "flakie" also. Any hints and tips as to where to start, and where to find parts? Thanks in advance. 1BB (p.s. I tried posting this message earlier and it disappeared. If it turns into a double post, just chalk it up to "newbieness")
