Greetings Good Folks; I have been looking into the design of a Jubilee Klone based on the JAES Oct. 2000 document that was so kindly posted on these forums. I am not so well versed in the deeper aspects of theoretical design, in fact, I feel pretty good getting this far. I have looked at the fine work by Neandertal and others and I can understand a good bit of the Graphic parts of it, but I am a little baffled (excuse the pun) by some of the dimensions. Not that I think that they are wrong, but how they were derived, other than the stated tracing of a scaled drawing. I looked at the JAES document and saw a statement that said the height of the horn would need to be only 0.482m (or 1-7) in height. They then went on to talk about desired height for proper listening and stated that two drivers would be required. So far I am with you. The paper starts to define horn area at four points along the centerline of the horn. I can understand length and area. At the first point line length 0.0, the area is stated to be 0.029 sq.m. or 44.950 sq. in. After this I start to get a little foggy. The next point along the center line is 0.209m at 0.069sq, m. (106.95 sq. in.) Great, that I understand. Now, at point C the length is 0.741m with an area of 0.075 sq.m. (116.25 sq. in). The problem that I am having is I do not know if the third point is measured from the origin or the previous point? The same goes for the last point. I am sure that there is some clue or standard practice that I am missing on that one. Not being one to let common sense stand in my way, I have wasted several lunch hours at work trying to come up with a modified idea on the Jubilee theme. There should be some .pdf files posted with this text. The design stays as close as I could come to the original design, but with the idea that it would be for only one driver. My main concern was moving them up stairs to sit beside the TV. Think of two of these units for each side. I am working on a way to have them attach in an acceptable way with the upper horns and crossovers in a third box. I have not gotten that far yet. Also, I have not tried to build this design yet either I kind of wanted comments good or bad, because this will be my first speaker project since the old Speaker Lab units I built in college. I live on 20 acres in an area where my nearest neighbors are 500 yards away, and I still can hear the guys in the cars with the BOOM-BOOM thumpers. They do tend to drive buy pretty quick. I do have the pleasure of setting my LaScalas up in the Garage and sitting on the drive and hearing them in a great controled outdoor setting. Wonderful. That is worth the higher commuting cost... I am a blessed man. 1BB

This is a photo of when I pulled the bottom off of the ratty old La Scallas that I was given. Turns out that they were in great condition inside. (crossovers will be updated some day, but the drivers are still in good shape.) 1BB

Pulling the bottom off is easy, but there is the seal that must be removed and provisions made to replace. I believe that the use of plumbers rope caulk is the method of choice to reseal the chamber. You may find that you still need the mirror and flashlight to inspect the speaker. Please be careful to keep any tools away from the speaker cone. It is a little tight in the chamber, so take care. Be sure that you really want to get into the chamber before you go there. Good luck. 1BB

OK. This is most likely too little, too late, but I found and bought this receiver for use with my La Scalas while I am working with / on them. It is a real clean low cost receiver. For me it powers my LS with such authority that my wife has come into the garage with an appeal from my kids to turn it down. Good luck on finding a $3000.00 mini-van. But it does sound like a good Idea. Minivans can haul amazing amounts of crap and still has pretty good milage. (I had one that got 21 mpg and now I have a p/u truck that gets about 12. whine whine whine!!) I admire you in that I had to wait until I was 50 to get my first La Scalas! 1BB

All the problems of the front mounting could be fixed with the careful use of a router and a proper bit. Route out a recess the thickenss of the lip and then the grill will fit and your reflection/refraction problem is reduced. (ok, it may not be that simple, but you may want to look into such a thing) 1BB

However you "fix" it, I am sure that they will be beautiful. Will you use the same veneer on the endgrain, or will you do something else? This kind of art just amazes me. Please keep on posting the photos. 1BB

I am now offically DEPRESSED. I live near Houston Texas, and all I can seem to find is construction grade stuff. I hope that I just do not know where to look. I see all these projects being constructed with that 11-ply material and I count 5 ply on what I have and then slink back to the garage and start cutting MDF. Even the MDF is $25+ a sheet. On the bright side, perhaps by the time I get my "touch" back I will find some good wood. Until then the craftsmen of the world are giving thanks that I am only mauling MDF. 1BB
