  1. Foam setup is 95% complete. I honestly can't believe how much of a difference it made!!

I agree with others who have done it, other than different speakers, this has made the most impact on sound quality compared to any upgraded amp, CD player, etc. My total investment was $63 shipped. It looks like I will only be using about half of the foam that I received, too. I'll either put the rest up on eBay or offer it for sale on here when my project is completed.

The DIY bass traps that I made from the wedge tiles & corner blocks have increased the lower octave bass noticeably. My wife said things seem more muffled, but I think they seem much more flat and natural. Of course she has commandeered the basement and is currently watching the Food Network so I can't mess around with music or movies quite yet. [+o(]

I'll have to toss Star Wars III in or maybe Behind Enemy Lines to test out the dynamics of the new setup.

  2. Not changes, just different drivers are used. If I remember correctly the RC-7 uses the same 1.75" tweeter that is in the RF-7. The RC-7 is probably overkill for RF-35 main speakers. If possible, I would look into trading out the RF-35s for RF-5s or RF-7s. You have an awesome center channel there.

  3. Sounds excellent so far. The rear foam has helped the sound seem more immediate and direct, it no longer is echoed all over by the angles in the rear wall and ceiling. Its interesting to put your head up to the foam and them move it directly below it. There are very strong reflections coming back from the untreated part of the wall but the treated part sounds almost completely dead. The room has had a problem with boomy bass in various areas too and they seem to have been smoothed out nicely.

  4. Nice. but I'm sure you'll get better sound if you space out those speakers a little (or a lot).

I agree. Lower the center channel and space the front mains apart more and you'll be surprised how much better everything will sound.

  5. Some speakers such as the RF-7 have a very low minimum impedence (2.8 ohms). Most low-watt receivers and amplifiers cannot effectively handle that low of an impedence. Typically a high-watt and high-current amp will be better suited for lower impedences. More watts give you more headroom to work with for sudden bursts of sound.

I'm not sure if the RF-83 has the same minimum impedence, but I think its safe to say that they too would benefit from a clean high watt amp with the type of music you listen to.

  6. Good to see you probably figured it out. Although, I have no idea why it would be shutting off with simply being in a certain input? [:)]

My best friend had a LaserDisc player a looong time ago. I remember watching Jurassic Park on it. He had a pretty nice system with a Klipsch sub back in the day. It was annoying having to turn the disc over every half hour, though!

  7. Matches my h/k receiver perfectly!

Embarassingly, up to this point I had been using a Magnavox DVD player that I won at a work party 2 years ago. It was worth about $30. Music DVDs such as Eagles Farewell Tour I and U2 Rattle and Hum always sounded terrible on the Magnavox. CD playback was also very poor. Picture quality was so-so. Blacks were never black, colors were ok.

I was happy to see UPS deliver my h/k DVD player to me at work today. I got a DVD 31-Z (refurbished) for $88 shipped, retailing at $349.

So what is different between a $30 DVD player and a $349 DVD player? EVERYTHING!!! I used to be disappointed when I played live concert DVDs because everyone on here kept saying how good they sounded. Well, now I hear what everyone else is hearing. First DVD I played was Rattle and Hum and the first song I played was Angel of Harlem. Halfway through the song I turned to my wife and said "Now, I know that you don't notice any difference between this DVD player and the old one" at which point she interrupted me and said "Um, I can tell a HUGE difference! The picture quality is quite a bit better, too."

Lots more bass, treble is much more detailed but much smoother and voices sound incredibly crisp.

It is a DVD-Audio player, too. I'm only in 2 channel right now, but maybe in the future I'll be able to take advantage of that feature.

Looks like I'll be spending a bit of time watching/listening to all my DVDs again! [:D]

  8. Very weird problem! No idea why it would be happening, but you might try and switch which input you have the TV going in to. Do you have your audio going from your TV into your receiver? If so, is there a way to bypass going through the TV and running your audio directly into your receiver from your cable TV?

Also, if you have the audio going from your TV into your receiver make sure to set your TV's audio out settings correctly. Most TVs have the option to change between fixed/variable audio out. It should be set on fixed so that the volume is controlled by the receiver.

  9. I like Ethan Winer, this statement gave me a slight chuckle though:

"One standard MiniTrap is nearly six times more effective than the same four-foot length of corner foam at 100 Hz and all lower frequencies."

Its also more than six times as expensive ;)

And, did he ever think that I don't want that much frequency dampening? Sure they're more effective, but at what cost? Having a completly dead, flat sounding room?

  10. I have seen these foam around audiogon before, not sure if they are the same ones, but the specs of these foam is kind of a mystery. They advertise it to be the same as Auralex's version, but each type of foam that Auralex makes have specs and absorption properties listed very clear, and each type cater to different type of absorption. If they are that cheap, then who cares, they are just foam. I was kind of surprised when I got my Auralex, and said to myself: " I just paid $80 for foam that you find used as packing contents for other products". Just me venting.

Foambymail lists their specs very well on both eBay and their website. There is different foam as far as open-cell and closed-cell. I don't think packing foam is the same thing. Plus, the advantage of places like Foambymail is that each tile is symmetrical and can be placed end to end or stacked without any variations in the pieces lining up.
