Your wife is correct IMHO. Music should not be played during dinner. Dinner is quality time for husband and wife (and children, if any). I once ate at a friend's house and her dad read the sports section while eating! ! ! It was so rude I've have never forgotten it 'though it was many years ago. . .

In my experience, Heresies are a superb choice. My Heresies were
only $200 but more commonly I see they have bid up on eBay for $300 -
$500 dollars. I read where Cornwalls are too bass-y but haven't
heard any myself as of yet. You will also need a receiver or an
integrated amplifier if you do not listen to the radio and you need a
CD player. . . . For $1,000 total a sound system is very do-able.
I have spent actually just $200 all-in-all on my own because everything
else was free!!! The BEST way.
Oh well I'd better stop. I know your time is precious.

I can't really say except that a sub is an eyesore so it's probably better to put it inconpicuously a spot as you can. If you have it in front of your other equiptment it will be in the way.

Neil Young great guitar player? You gotta be kidding. He has a distinctive style but any guitarist could copy it. Great singer? You gotta be kidding. When I first played him for Beth she asked who it was and I said Neil Young and she said "Neil Young! I thought it was a girl!!!!" This was After the Gold Rush. Plus he plays everything too loud!!! My dog, if there is a doorbell ringing on the TV he'll immediately run
full speed to the door and bark until I show him there is really nobody
there. That is just on the TV I have never had a doorbell ring
coming from my Heresy (I) speakers. They would do the trick too[

My fifth grade teacher used to drink coffee all day. He had a pot full
of it in class with him!!! He would just drink continuously the entire
hour and I imagine he kept on doing that each hour with each other
class. He died before I graduated high school. He was in his 50s.

I know exactly just what you mean. My Heresies (model I) were only $200
for the two of them and I am VERRRRRRRRRRY happy with them. If I
owned my own home I would most definitely consider Cornwalls, Belles,
or the giants (Klipschorns). Of all the pictures I have seen I
like Oak with Cane grills best of all.

You have good advice from experts in the building trades but I am speaking from a human level. I thought about this some more and discussed with Beth and she feels that it would not be as bad to play "mood music" playing softly
BUT
background music is not for someone like me who makes an emotional connection to music. Have you ever seen "Amadeus" an old movie about (Wolfgang)(Amadeus) Mozart, the composer? He is playing a beautiful piece he just wrote for the king and royal guests on piano (or harpsichord ? ? ?) and everyone is chatting not paying attention to this brilliant work for the Ages and he becomes enraged! ! ! They are so rude not only because he was SUCH a genius but even if he wasn't they aren't treating him respectfully as a performer.
THAT IS WHAT I THINK OF WHEN I HEAR BACKGROUND MUSIC! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
