i dont have a tube pre... but have used 200wpc adcom GFA 555ii on K-horns as well as a 200wpc rotel, both are great "mid-fi" amps that get excellent reviews & compete with more expensive amps, they both sound excellent on high efficiency klipsch speakers.  currently using the adcom with chorus2 & SVS subs.  have also used an onkyo M504 @ 165wpc, very nice warm sounding amp.

as mentioned above, high power amps can work great for high efficiency speakers, having reserve power for if/when you need it is much better than running a lower power amp close to its peak/clipping power.  reserve power/headroom is a good thing.

Tried a GFA-5802 once. Blew up the first day. “Smoke on the amp stand”. Exit stage left.

The notion of needing lot's of power with Klipsch is BS. Continuation of the power wars started in the 70's. I am sure this is going to start a lively conversation with lots of disagreement but the more knowledgeable members know the truth.

Lots of watts with our speakers is like the little old lady in a Ferrari that never drives over 55mph. Nothing wrong with it but wasted dollars and power.  Anyone smart enough to say different should be smart enough to measure the average power they are truly using a multimeter and ohms law at the loudest level they listen at.

I trust my own experience. Others can believe what they want. That’s them not me.  BTW it has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with steady state absolute spl levels.

I’d rather have more than I need. Not that I trust meters, but I rarely go over 10 watts with my Onkyo M-504 with my Cornwalls or LaScala. Not that I’m in the room with them at that volume. That being said. Room size, placement, seating, music style, and preference. Using a small tube amp didn’t do it for me. A 40 watt tube amp wasn’t bad, but when you really wanna turn it up you can’t beat raw power. My opinion. My preference. I have Chorus I with a small Class A SS and it’s plenty at half to 2/3 volume. Different room and placement. Now the Carver tfm-35 powering Heresy II in a small room is too much. It was connected to something else before I brought them home.

back to @Khorn I haven’t had the pleasure of Khorns yet. No corners or a good room for them yet. 😉 It’s been my experience with other Klipsch (CW LS Chorus) as well as other speakers using high current amps (mostly NAD and HK) they sound excessively bright with higher efficiency speakers and are less forgiving to flawed sources. My guess is the tube pre helps alleviate that brightness.

In my case I’ve used many types of amplification and can state without reservation this is by far and away the best sounding power amp I have ever had. The tube preamp ads a touch of magic.

Before using a tube amp full time my main system was SS with tube preamp. My first amp almost 40 years ago was a Hafler 500 I built from a kit....I still have it along with a 220. Very simple designs with clean, mosfet sound. I've owned a lot of different amps over the years but will never let go of these. I think the right SS amp in your system can offer a great experience with just a different flavor vs tubes. If not a good match with your gear, you'll know it right away and will be hard to get used to.

Agree. I found with my Klipschorns the combo of my new tube preamplifier and great SS amplification that works wonders for me. Best sound with the same speakers I’ve been using exclusively in main system for almost 50 years now. BTW ran La Scalas before that.

  5. Many years ago I originally purchased La Scalas. It didn’t take very long to trade them in for Klipschorns. No comparison. I’ve been running them steadily in my main system for close to 50 years now and with my recent upgrade in driving electronics they perform substantially better than I ever hoped they could. Truly a “Lifelong” speaker system. So happy that I made that original choice so many years ago.

  6. I’ve run my Klipschorns for well over 40 years now and with many different combinations of amplification. I’ve used tube pre/SS power, all tube and all SS systems.  My new system is a tube preamp and an SS power amplifier. This is by far the best these speakers have sounded and by a rather large margin.

The amplifier design, construction and performance is absolutely amazing in so many unexpected ways. Nothing previously has come close and it was immediately apparent.

The amplifier is not very well known as it’s made in Denmark out of the Vitas family. The Alluxity Power One Stereo Amplifier.

We never know how our new gear will sound until placed in our room, but that amp has impressive stats, and that particular pre/amp combo should do well.

Have you considered the matching Power Pre? I like the looks.

    Nice screen name 😄

Thanks. I have wanted to get back to tubes in my chain after many years of all SS. I’ve had all sorts of amplification driving my Klipschorns over the years and a tube pre and SS combination does it for me. As a previous McIntosh owner I was on the verge of getting one until I ran into the Alluxity.

  8. My take on it is an extremely positive review. It concenrates on the things that the speaker does best....reproducing music in a realistic, dynamic and enjoyable manner and, doing so while being driven with sensibly powered quality amplification and "front end".

I enjoyed my La Scalas when I had them and certainly enjoy my Klipschorns now.

Great review and one that will definitely open some eyes (and hopefully) some ears as to what the Klipsch "Heritage" line is all about....enjoyable and lifelike music reproduction. Too bad it has taken so long.
