  1. Ear,

You are getting a little chippy again; let us respect the folks that fund our pursuits with far less cash flow than you can muster.

The HSU VTF-2 sub as I remember is $ 499; I do not think you can do SVS(plus power) in that price range.

I have never read a poor review of an HSU sub. HSU appears to be a reasonable value with some spl limitations at lower frequencies.

  2. Just a few days before I was going to place an order for the NAD T 761 for $750 plus shipping from Sound City.com; I ran into a demo Sherwood Newcastle separates setup I could not pass up.

I had some dialog with soundcity and have researched them to be a pretty sound dealer from what i could find.

The Outlaw was a finalist in my investiation as well. Pro Logic II functionality does limit your options somewhat.

  3. I have been employed as a Sales Engineer in the Automotive OEM parts supply industry for 19 years. Strange sales people really are obvious to me and I usually leave a store in less than 5 minutes.

It is a blesing to have such a great Klipsch dealer as Almas HIFI in southeast Michigan nearby. They have the entry level Klipsch speakers availiable for demos with Yamaha receivers and the upper level speakers availiable to listen to with Rotel separates almost all of the time. K Horns with Mc Intosh power also available for demo.

I do not get by their store very often and only rarely spend $ 1000 per year maximum, but I am always treated with respect. I know some of you fellow posters are not as pleased with your dealer options.

  4. One thing the Klipsch community may have not addressed is that even a moderately powerful sub MAY be inconsiderate to ones neihbors in an apartment or conventional condominium.

I live in a quad level. My music/HT rig is in the half underground level on a slab in a very large (by my standards) family room. When the sytem is driven hard you can feel the bass through the slab 16 or more feet away.

I use an Adire Audio Rava 12 in. sealed cabinet sub.

If you plan to move into a single family home at another point in time; investing in other components may be a better choice.

  5. Romex for the lows! That is a cheap tweak I would have never considered.

I have been thinking about AQ Slate or Straightwire Octave internal biwire. There has not been a great store environment to compare the two in my location.

I will try the Romex on the lows with my AQ type 6+ for the highs in the next month.

  6. NAD is coming out with a 5 disc progressive scan DVD Audio/Video player sometime in the next month.

I look forward to seeing a review of that player.

The product offerings come out so quick recently in the DVD and SACD technologies it is difficult to determine when to wait and when to purchase.

My Sony DVP S 530 D sounds great for movies but seems real obselete for music.

  7. 130+ posts since September is alot but you seem to be having fun.

Now if you bought 130 CDs and could not make your housepayment, that may be a problem.

If you were a daytrader and were making 130 trades a day with the cash you liquidated from your retirement fund, that may be a problem.

If the website was more important than "nookie", that may be a problem.

  8. Ray,

OK I am full of hot air too often.

Sorry; I'm stressed, flying in commercial aircraft again, brain dead, I got 4 kids, 2 dogs, oldest kid just went to college in September; second just got braces, wife is still torqued over my new Sherwood Newcastle power amp I didn't ask permission for(I did but she did not see it that way) and my mutual funds are taking a pounding!

Correct about the Klipsch though; I hope.

I have only been subscribing to Stereophile for about 4 years I think.

It is humbling being caught embelishing.

How many years back does that list go?

  9. Colin,

So what wire do you use?

I agree the front end is extremely important.

$ 100 pair of speaker cables is a pretty cost efffective experiment. I bought a 12 foot demo pair of Audio Quest Type 6+ for $ 80. I then biwired with some RadioShack cable for the lows.

The type 6+ can be "taken apart" to biwire allowing for another tweak possibility.

Until somone starts making crossover upgrades for RB5s; I cannot tweak like you Heritage guys.

  10. I get a bit hacked off at Stereophile but as it was said the letters, music reviews and industry update is worth the price.

Some of the brands they avoid reviewing make me suspicious of their objectivity.

    1. Klipsch

    2. Parasound

    3. Harman Kardon

    4. KEF

    5. Definitive Technology

I am sure other competent brands are avoided I am not thinking of.

  11. I have been impressed with Rotel CD players for a few years. I am not surprised the difference was small.

I put an MSB Link II in my system using the coax feed from my $ 200 Kenwwod changer. That was a huge difference.

Subjectively, you would have to spend some serious money on a DAC to beat out the Rotel on board DAC.

Like...MSB Full Nelson with upsampling; I think that is about $ 800.

  12. I think Sony poorly masters their CDs in order to push their SACD technology. But, I love a good conspiracy theroy.

Patricia Barber "Companion" on Blue Note is awesome. Any audio junkie needs this one in their collection.

I just bought Eric Clapton "Rainbow Concert" on Polydor remastered in 1995. It is a little sloppy but what a hot rock band. Steve Winwood singing "Presence of the Lord" back in 1973 is very solid recording of a male rock vocal. Members of Traffic are kind of the backup band.

Pete Townsend and Ron Wood playing guitar with EC is very impressive but a bit cluttered at times. Overall the recording is raw but allot more fun than some of the overproduced recordings of the last few years.

  13. I am a salesman so I hate to buy what everyone else buys and be a conformist.

For example, I have Chesapeake Bay Retrievers instead of Labs.

If I did not get the great deal on the Newcastle separates I bought a month ago I was seroisly considering the following in order of quality perception for music:

    1. NAD T761 not alot of effects modes but lots of high current headroom and great build quality.

    2. Outlaw Limited number of digital inputs and lower power; good build quality and price

    3. HK and Onkyo forget the model numbers but they use good DACs and have good high current capability.

  14. It seems that Stereophile is compelled to find undetectable differences to justify the price of the componenets it reviews through many hours of setup and testing.

I do not expect them to invest much time responding to the letter from a guy who listened to K Horns for the first time and thought they sounded great with a 20 year old Kenwood receiver.

I like Stereophile somewhat but Sensible Sound is much better grounded in reality.

  15. I like the thought of the "fast" description. I am listening to the Simon and Garfunkle box set set right now and the bass guitar and occassional low brass origonally recorded over 30 years ago sounds real. That is why we buy Klipsch of course.

I bought an Adire Audio Rava sub with a sealed cabinet for tighter bass in the under 50 hz range.

I run my RB5s as large in my Newcastle preamp setup.

The addition of the Newcastle separates in September makes a huge improvement in soundstage of the RB5s. I will never buy cheap power again.

  16. I am not real clear on all of the CD debate but most CD players can only digitally output 16 bit "words" at 44.1Khz frequency through an optical or coaxial output. The capability of most DACs is under utilized, I think.

Supposedly some DVD players can output digital data at 24 bit words and 96 Khz. What I have read indicates DVD manufactures restrict the digital output of the players to be only 48 Khz to prevent piracy of the software. The people from tweakaudio.com say they mod DVD players to output a higher frequency signal.

Upsampling seems to be a great buzzword; to me it means the hardware in the DAC creates data where it does not exist going from 16 bit definition of the "note" at a frequency of 44.1 Khz to 24 bit at 96 Khz. I could hardwire an upsampling board into my MSB Link II DAC, but I am a little skeptical if the hardware really creates somthing from nothing.

But hey; I am only a plastics engineer.

Any body have a better handle on this?

I would hate for somone with an investment in a good CD player like a McIntosh to get no performance enhancement from an outboard DAC purchase. My DAC is hooked up to a $200 Kenwood 5 disc changer, definitely an improvement over the internal Kenwood DAC.

  17. I bought the RB5s for a couple of reasons.

    1. I wanted to have a large sound from a small box.

    2. I wanted to hear the design improvement over my KSB 3.1s.

    3. Chance to use experiment with different speaker stands, dampening, weighting and spikes.

    4. Veneer matches wood trim in the family room.

    5. Have owned many all black speakers in the past.

Why did you pick one or the other?

I have never had a chance to A/B the RF3 to the RB5 in my home environment.

  18. SVT,

If your parents have the money there is a real neat brick and mortar HT place called SmartHomeTheaters in Livonia, MI.

Vince and Ken are real easy to work with.

They do the whole house thing for a formal business for over 3 years.

They carry Monitor Audio, Parasound, Integra and projection stuff also.

If you do not have time to wire the whole house yourself these guys are better to work with than the snobby places on Woodward.

Almas HIFI has two stores that carry Klipsch in Dearborn and Royal Oak; but I think they would be pricey for the "turnkey" instalation service.

Tell you my Mustang story later .
