  1. Thanks folks for the great answers. I also checked the HDMI faq site here http://www.hdmi.com/learningcenter/faq.aspx and found just about the same answer. My next question is how do I tell if my receiver is capable of multi channel PCM? It's the pioneer elite VSX 84TXsi. It does 7.1, does that mean it's capable of multi channel PCM? Thanks again
  2. I have a question that I haven't really been able to find a firm answer to. I have a pioneer elite amp from last years product line up. It does not however process Dolby true HD or DTS HD. I'm wondering if I purchase one of the newer HD DVD or BlueRay models that process those formats internally will I still be able to listen to the format or must the receiver be Dolby HD and DTS HD certified as well. Am I correct in believing that some players will pass the HD sound format but not process it requiring the receiver to do the processing. Alternatively newer players will process the HD format and pass it to a receiver that doesn't process the signal but will pass it to the speakers? Is it at all dependant on the type of cable passing the signal i.e. HDMI versus optical? Secondly, I'm wondering if the PS3 processes these new sound formats? Thanks for any input you guys and gals may have.
  3. It's not legal but there isn't much that can be done if someone has a small amount for their own use. Now if they are driving a vehicle on the other hand that is a different story. It's also different if the marihuana is individually packaged for selling, then they are trafficking. In any case the rcmp can seize the drugs and destroy it. It's likely the police may have seen it and thought, hmm should I spend 45 minutes dealing with a joint or continue going to the theft/fraud/assault etc complaint? Which serves the greater good?
  4. I'm originally an East Coaster hence the picture of Halifax's Citadel Hill for an avatar. I haven't been out here for very long but I've searched high and low for Klipsch and the only place I can find them is London Drugs, and I hate buying them there. The staff aren't as knowledgeable as they would be at a specialty shop, the prices are fixed at the msrp, and there are only one or two employees that can wiggle the prices down 10-15% and if you're not there when they are working you have to come back another day. I've only made it down to Victoria once so far but was pretty impressed by it, it reminded me a lot of Halifax too. I didn't make it to any Klipsch dealers though, I did the tourist thing and took in the sights.
  5. I'm on the island as well, 3 hours north of Victoria.
  6. I've never bought from him but read the reviews and buyer beware. There are a fair number of negative reviews saying the seller doesn't have the items in stock and only gets them after he receives the money. He might not be able to get what it is you've asked for. I'm doubtful he's an authorized dealer.
  7. I just fixed my problem. The dvd player was set to PCM and not bitstream. I gather PCM outputs a stereo signal through the optical out whereas the bitstream will send a multi channel signal. I've been listening to some dodgey sound with a pricey receiver for a while.[:$]
  8. Thanks for the suggestion. The only thing is the problem is there regardless of the selected surround format. And then why does the receier default to stereo when asked to automatically select the surround format?
  9. My receiver doesn't seem to be differentiating between my surrounds. When I play a THX audio test signal or Avia signal both left and right surrounds play even though the test pattern is only being played for one of the two surrounds. I'm using a 5.1 setup, my gear is in my sig. Thanks for any thoughts. Edit To further complicate things, if I play test tones from the dvd players internal system it will only play the left and right speakers and nothing comes out of anything else even thoughit shows that a tone is being played. If I play a test tone out of my receiver everything works as it is supposed to. One more thing, my receiver has an auto source selection which picks the proper sound format for the source being inputed. anytime I use it it selects stereo. So, for some reason is my system just playing stereo and my receiver is converting it to a surround format? Does anyone have an idea what is going on here? Thanks
  10. The RSW-12 has a msrp of 1,200 while the SVS PC 25-31 is 850. It's like comparing apples to oranges pricewise and the SVS still outperforms the Klipsch.
  11. I'm a big Klipsch fan but I don't necessarily feel that the Klipsch subs offer the same value for the dollar that some other subs do. I've only heard the rw-12d in a demo room but I have to say I was not impressed. It sounded boomy and lacked punch which is unjustified at $899 cdn. I heard an svs a few years ago and it absolutely throttled the room. I ordered one last week and it should be in any day now. I know demo rooms aren't always the greatest and it was at London Drugs where a lot of the employees I've dealt with don't understand the gear to the same level that a specialty retailer would plus some of the walls were made of glass. Some other manufacturers with good bang for the buck are HSU and Outlaw.
  12. The rf-35's have dual 8" whoofers while the 62's have dual 6.5' whoofers.
  13. SVS has it www.svsound.com/products-parts.cfm
  14. Wow, did I get ripped off. I bought the rs-42's at London Drugs for $500/pair. I'm happy with them but I wish I had had the dough to get the 52's.
  15. I spoke with them about my room but it was a moot point. I'm living in a condo right now and will be moving into a house hopefully after Christmas. So I bought a huge sub, probably way too much sub but I'll certainly never wish I bought bigger or better. It's the recently discontinued PC-Ultra. The U.S. is sold out and now there is apparently one left in Canada. The new 13.5" version comes out this summer. In retrospect I have no doubt that the 20-39pci would have been way more than enough for me.
