  1. I will say after further listening that there seems to be a lot more bass energy coming out if these horns. On some material its overwhelming. Maybe my rooms being over stimulated now. I don't know. The mid bass is peaky and resonant sounding at some frequency I would say. Standing near the horn you can feel it in the floor more and the corner/ walls are more energized to the touch. Better clarity on lower part of voices and instruments in my opinion. Good resistive quality to kick drum. More punch. Better snare hit and textural details on percussion. The bass lines are very overpowering on some stuff though and I can't say I like the change due to this. I am surprised at the results of this change to say the least. Wish I could measure to see what's going on here. Maybe just made these peaky at some frequencies? Maybe the right deflector here .... Shape, size changes could be a win. Maybe it just screws the design. Interesting none the less.

  2. I tried this yesterday and am interested in thoughts and if anyone has explored this before. I ripped a 4x4 at 45 degrees to make 2.5" H x a little under 5" W wedges. I centered these and attached these to the tailboard to create a deflector and reduce reflection back into the horn off the flat tail piece. My impressions are that the lower midrange improved and the bass got more lively and louder almost like a jumbo LaScala but with deeper bass. It does however also seem more peaky through the mid bass in a somewhat distracting way. It would be nice if someone could do this who has a means to do some testing and measuring.

  3. selling these great horns that I bought from Greg Roberts a year or so ago. I built my own Edgar tractrix horns that i am very happy with and enjoy the exposed horn look that I have now. These sell for $1059 new. $775 +shipping is good price for these I feel and they will be shipped in the original boxes if needed. We can do paypal or come to my home in Watertown ny with cash and pick them up. I can email or text pics as needed. They are as new except the tweeter mounting boards has a couple of screw holes in them from having 2-3 different tweeters mounted. these boards are not seen once installed but can be filled and repainted if you wanted to.

  4. I appreciate the constructive input that some have offered. I would not ask a question unless I thought there was something to gain based on things I have heard or been told or read may be pertinant. I was just looking to understand this more and see if anyone had test results on tap selection to share. I think we all understand simple wire polarity at this level of audio enlightenment. I know that "by ear" impressions have merit but would like to see info or testing that quantifys this. Again I may have worded things poorly in my post and I am sorry if that caused issues for anyone. Inferring ignorance in ones reply is still not warranted regardless. Simple respectful replys are the ticket here so that we all can be a part of things regardless pf technical expertise. The only dumb questions are the ones never asked.

  5. I worded my question poorly I guess, what I am wondering is if the taps effect phase relationship in the network in some way causing the midrange to go out of phase with the other drivers. Do some tap combinations sound or measure better than others in anyones experience.

  6. Does selecting different taps on an autoformer in a "universal type network" effect midrange driver polarity, or does this stay constant regardless of tap selection? I would like to better understand this. are the combinations using the 0 tap more optimal in any way? has anyone done any testing in this regard?

  7. Some pics of my Khorns and Volti crossovers. I have them on top for tuning, probably moving them under top hat this afternoon and I'll take a pic or two of drivers then and share. Using PRV D290Py tweeters in these cut back 6db with l-pads using Mills resistors I bought from Parts Express. These tweeters sound excellent in my opinion but I will still likely try the Beymas soon.I have B&C dcm 50 midrange drivers installed( Thanks Greg) on 0-2 tap. These things are really sounding fantastic right now. I'll be selling some stock parts soon...motor boards( nice shape w/o badges), k-55's, k-77's and Voltis 2" 120 adaptors, as well as stock AA crossovers.

When I bought these they had some edges that were a bit rough so I just bound the cabinets with oak veneer. I did not want to lose the original veneer. I added the oak Piece on the bottom as well. These have the Crites cast woofers in them also. That was a bigger improvement than I expected. The bass is a bit deeper with more output and smoother upper bass. I have made new whips with gold forks like whats on the midrange taps in the pics for each driver once I put the crossovers under the top hats.

I built the wall thats lighter color in the pics to have a good corner on the right side. Used solid construction with insulation inside. My room works out great for these and Imaging is nice. One thing I have noticed with these about 17-18' apart and sitting 12-13' back are stereo effects. I cant believe the information I have been missing all these years by having my speakers closer together. With this set up the soundstage is awesome and stereo effects come torough beautifully while not being locked in to a tiny spot for good center image.

  8. In my opinion any Heritage speaker produces bass in a more accurate manner than most other loudspeakers I have ever heard. Especially any with horn loaded bass. There is a sound/feel of resistance in a kick and a solid rap in a snare as in live music that translates well in the Heritage and extended Heritage line. I have owned R series stuff before and never experienced that kind of bass tone with them even though they had a strong bass output in other ways, same with KLF's I had for a while. My Khorns make the best bass I have ever heard from a speaker in my home. LaScalas hit a bit harder in the upper bass but the Khorns are just about perfect to me and sound deep and tight in my room with lots of dynamic swing.

  9. Any of my Keb Mo cd's, they all sound pretty fabulous

    Robert Cray "Time will tell"

Bennett/Brubeck "The white house sessions, live 1965" this recording shows it age a bit but sounds authentic and brings you there. Drums are recorded as they should be in my opinion. Tony sounds fantastic here, he phrases things nicely.

Johnny Lee Hooker "It serves you right to suffer"

    Tool "undertow"

Robben Ford "Bringin it back home"

Mighty Sam McClain "Blues for the soul"

    Lee Ritenour's " 6 string theory"

    Joe Bonamassa " Blues deluxe"

    Those are a few.

  10. The past few months I have been upgrading my Khorns with Gregs products and wanted to share some thoughts on them. First off Greg is a down to earth guy who will spend time answering emails and talking on the phone to answer questions and share thoughts. Each Piece I have purchased from him to date is very well crafted and thought out.

The V-tracs are very solidly built to begin with and fit was perfect into my K-horns. I actually hate to have these covered up by the grill cloth but even that was stretched and stapled to perfection. I bought the 120 adaptors for my stock k-55's to use on these as well. Those are also made well and mounted nicely onto the horns with everything lining up perfectly. The interesting process that Greg describes when making the adaptors seems to have worked in my opinion. I have had great results with this set up and I probably would not ever really need to buy a 2" exit driver. Of course I plan on doing that just the same cause I am so into knowing what the next thing will bring. The idea that you can do these upgrades in several steps and each time get that thrill and likely reward for going to the next tier is fun. Gregs offerings support this notion very well.

When I recieved the VTK crossovers and opened them up I was floored by how they looked. Robust, clean looking and again well crafted pieces for sure. I dont know if I can ever bury them under the top hats or not, I have been very happy with the sound of these networks, and the amount of flexibility they provide while maintaining a simple aproach is noteworthy in my opinion.

Volti keeps an inventory of everything they sell in my experience and I recieved my order in a couple of days each time. Not having to wait is a plus for an impatient fella like myself. Everything was expertly packaged as well. Overall a great experience dealing with Greg and I feel I have a friend I can sometimes turn to for advice and opinions as well. These upgrades are all improvments, sound fantastic and are worth every penny I have spent.

These are just my opinions an the Volti products and I would not like to see this turn into a who built what first debate as I have seen here before. I wanted to share my experience to help anyone with thoughts of upgrading and to explain a little the road I am going down. I dont see much value in a proprietary debate with things that have been around in one form or another for many many years. Horns, crossovers and speakers have been around for a very long time after all. Its about takin it to the next level I would say, healthy competition makes us all better.

just gotta sell off some used parts now....

  11. check out Keb Mo, Jimmy Vaughn, Robben Ford, Robert Cray, they all record some nice sounding cd's in my opinion. also one of my favorites is Tab Benoit, he does cajun style blues. Tab has a distinct sound to most of his cd's that apeals to me. great guitar tone. he is a great player and singer. 3 great live blues cd's in my opinion are: Little Milton "grits aint groceries" This cd is a little forward at times vocally but a great performance with lots of emotion. Buddy Guy & Junior Wells "last time around-live at legends" a special recording that sounds excellent. Muddy Waters ahd the Rolling Stones "checkerboard lounge" some really great moments on this one.

some more specifics: John Lee Hooker "serves you right to suffer" outstanding recording

Robben Ford "Bringin it back home" and "Handful of blues"

Keb Mo "Keep it simple".... "slow down"..."Just like you" and "Keb mo"

Tab Benoit "The sea saint sessions"..."Standin on the bank"...Wetlands"

Mighty Sam McClain " Blues for the soul"

Robert Cray "Sweey potatoe pie"..."Shame and a sin"...and "Time will tell'

Susan Tedeschi "Live from austin texas"

Harmonica Shah "Live at the cove with Jack De Keyzer"

That ought to keep you busy :)
