  1. Sold cheap ($511)! Oh well... someone will be very happy with that deal.
  2. Michael -- thanks for posting the link properly, too!
  3. Thanks... I know I'll regret parting with them, but priorities dictate that I do so. I am going to play a little more with the Fostex (add some super tweeters, for instance), so it won't hurt QUITE so bad to see them go! Chris
  4. Now on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9724652190&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1
  5. I've had several older scooters (Vespa and Lambretta, and some mopeds to boot), and they sure are fun. I don't know a lot about the newer ones, and I'm sure they're plenty reliable, but they are scooters... so no real payload capacity, and no passengers (at least not in much comfort). You might look into a used Honda or something less expensive and just as reliable. Vespas are cool, but in my experience, are not something you want to rely on day-in and day-out. Say you have a wedding to get to and it's raining... are you just going to go wet? If mileage is what you're looking for, shop for a good used VW TDI. I have a '98 that I paid $5k for, and it returns 45+ mpg consistently. If you sell your Jeep you can buy one of these outright and get liability-only insurance. They're great cars. If that tickles your fancy AT ALL, check out tdiclub.com and get some more info on what to look for. They even had a F/S forum there. Good luck with the pooch; hope everything turns out alright!
  6. That's a good looking pooch. Congrats! Let me make a recommendation for others considering acquisition of a canine companion. I got my best friend Felix from a schnauzer rescue group; there are scads of these rescue groups for any given breed, and generally speaking, the "foster" parents know each dog quite well and won't steer you wrong. Felix had been a PERFECT match for me, just as his foster mom Juliana predicted. He's old and, for all practical purposes blind, but he is the most loving little dude I have ever known. I swear, "rescued" dogs have the capacity to appreciate the second chance(s) they get. And a final thought -- schnauzers shed VERY LITTLE if at all. Softer coat = no shedding, generally. They can be "barky" but can also learn not to be quite so noisy. Anyway, thumbs up to adopting a rescue! Chris
  7. No problem; thanks for the update. FWIW, all these need is either a coat of paint or a veener-job. They are 100% structurally sound, and drivers are near mint.
  8. Still available... please, no low-balling on price. At this point, I'll keep them to tinker with and/or for a garage system before I'll lose money on them. Tks, Chris
  9. Haven't heard from him yet... but thanks for passing my info along to him!
  10. At this point, it's first-come first-served. Interested party #1 passed, party #2 has yet to reply to my email, and partied 3 and 4 have posted interest in the thread. Someone come and get 'em! Thanks all, Chris
  11. Charleston is in east central IL. Where are you located? Shoot me an email and I'll send pics. My TWQT cabinets were built by a fellow in MI. I just tried different drivers in them and chaged the internal volume a bit with some insulation fo find what I liked. Wound up using the Fostex F120a (pricey, but an AWESOME driver!). You're right. SMOOTH, extended bass. Amazing for a 5" driver! Chris
  12. EDIT -- new price, $511. Ebay buyer is a flake. Email if interested! See my other posts for my rationale for selling... I'm a little too bummed to re-hash it all here, but suffice it to say that I would sure like to keep these speakers. I just bought them and would like to spend more time tuning them to see how accustomed I can get to the Klipsch horn sound, but at the moment I prefer the sound of the old Fostex full-range drivers in TQWT cabinets (which also fit in my room better). My La Scalas are painted black and have their fair share of scratches and dings, but are structurally sound and electronically excellent. They sit on casters. AA crossovers which appear to be original; I had been in contact with Bob Crites (BEC on this forum) about rebuilding them, and would love to see a buyer follow-through with that. Bob has been MOST helpful answering my many questions and deserves the business! Anyway, the speakers are here in Charleston, IL (61920) and can be auditioned. Is $600 too much to ask for the pair? Many thanks, Chris cmcougill(at)eiu(dot)edu
  13. Man, guys (& gals), I just dunno... I fiddled with my squawkers (rope caulk and a light coat of rubber undercoating), and while they sound better (smoother) to my ears, I am still having a hard time tuning my ears to these things. I find that they sound pretty nice after an hour or so listening, but I hooked my Fostex full-rangers back up and they IMMEDIATELY sounded "right." The balance is there with the Fostex, while the La Scalas just sound too forward to me. I think maybe my room is too small for these speakers. I'm not sure which pair to keep! Letting both stay is not an option space-wise or conscience-wise. I am getting married this summer and have vowed to tidy up a bit, and the money I'll get from selling one pair or the other will pay for a chunk of the wedding, to boot. My speakerphile side says "Get BEC to rework the crossovers and at least have a listen," but my Good Fiance side says "sell them as-is for what I've got in 'em and let the new owner make that call." I feel bad, as I've all but promised to send the crossovers to Bob for a workover, but I'm just not sure now. Are a pair of commercial (read: black) LaScalas in solid shape (a few scratches and dings, but no structural issues) worth $600? Your thoughts are appreciated! Chris
  14. Thanks for the tips... "Klipschorns mains, La Scala surrounds and Heresy II center." Are you kidding??? WOW! Now THAT'S home theatre!
  15. A ha, but I am using tubes! 300B's, in fact. And as for natural bass, I concur entirely. I was listening to 5" Fostex full range drivers before the La Scalas, and those are tough to beat for "natural bass!" They extended quite impressively. I agree with your final comments and have been in touch with BEC as recommended re: his replacement kits or service. Thanks for the comments, nevertheless!
  16. Thanks for the advice! Any tips on good sources for replacement caps?
  17. Hello gents (and ladies) -- I suspect this has been covered already, but a cursory search didn't turn up the info I am looking for. Apologies if this is a redundant topic, but I just picked up a commercial (read: painted black) pair of LaScalas and while I love the sound, they are far too "forward" and "bright" for my liking. Some of this may well be due to the fact that I have a very small listening room. Am I to understand that the AA crossovers are somehow adjustable, or do I just need to add L-pads to the mid and tweeter horns? For the moment, I stuffed a few cotton balls into the horn throats and it's better, but I'd like to find a proper fix. I have owned several horn systems in the past, and most recently was listening to a pair of Fostex full-range drivers in TWQT cabinets. While the Klipsch aren't as detailed and pure, they are certainly more efficient, and I'd like to explore their potential. Do any of you "deaden" your horns with putty or anything? I used window sealing putty on my old Altec 811 horns to good effect. Just curious.... Many thanks! Chris in IL
