  1. Hello again Tom.. Thanks for your kind words... There is nothing to this, just take your time, be neat and swap out one at a time if you fear mixing up the wires, you'll be fine[]... I went back and read my first note for this thread and BOY, guess a little too much wine or something, I see some pretty awful spelling [:S]. NOTE: I am cleaning one of the grills right now outside. I bought some OXY clean spray and I am following the directions. This one side grill was already done once with that Fantastik spray, but I want to give this new stuff a try. I will take photos of this right now and post... Keep and eye right here for more ! Regards, Gary
  2. Ahhhh, I remember well when this LP first came out!!! (1965) I was in 7th grade and they were setting up a PA system in our gym for an upcoming dance. The music they were testing it with was the very Herb Alpert album. They played pretty much the complete LP !!! I had to own it shortly after that, and liked pretty much everything he recorded ever since. `What Now My Love' was another great hit for him! ......Gary
  3. HA [] I COULD NOT resist this one........ Again, thanks to Bob for providing the capacitors for this job. Soon, they will be installed and I will be able to hear these speakers for the FIRST TIME! ......Gary
  4. Photos here shows BOTH are now complete. Did you notice that the original wiring assembly shows wires on one are dashed with black stripes, while the other has none ?? Interesting........ I hope you enjoyed the photo tour of this little crossover rebuild. I used the same techniques and neatness conducted in our pipeorgan shop. I will send MORE photos of the bass module, the cleaning of much dust etc. in and round the horn assemply. Then cleaning and restoration of the woodwork and hopfully a brightening of the cloth grills also.................... With my regards, Gary
  5. Here is one crossover completed...........yeaaaaaay []
  6. This picture shows one cap mounted and the other about to be...
  7. Here is one of a cap being mounted and an original still on the board (sorry, a bit out of order from that last photo - got carried away)[*-)]
  8. Here is the `short stack' of old oil filled caps.... Look familiar ?
  9. Here, the washers have been inserted into the mounting brackets to complete this detail...
  10. The mounting boards have been washed and dried, ready for remounting of the components!
  11. Here the mounting boards are, with original dust and dirt...
  12. Here, the components are transported to my work mat, in tact...
  13. Started to load all photos from the Xover project. First one went off without a hitch. The next one came up with the warning about the admin. NOT allowing dupliclate mailings. I am not sure what this means, perhaps I should include a little bit of dialog in each one and then it will sent ?? Not sure, put worth a dry.. ............Gary
  14. Ok everyone..... Here then are the photos I took from yesterday's work on the K'horn's model A crossover. This includes shots of the crossovers, then all components dismounted and on the table mat. The mounting boards BEFORE cleanup. Then after being washed with a brush and dried quickly with towels. A couple of photos of the new caps being installed, and then a shot of the old GE oil filled caps and then the completed job. I made SURE that NO new holes were made for the mounting of the new caps. I used two of the same holes once used by the original caps and recycling the screws as well... Hope you like the work done on these. You may ask what those were in the background? They are organ pipes that I was working on from a small portable organ which we provide for the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the concert season out at Tanglewood, MA [] Enjoy the continued progress on the Klipschorns through the photos provided. Regards, Gary
  15. Ok, came home today to find my topic has been moved to this forum... So, I hope people will catch this here, as this is where the pictures will be turning up[]... Stay tuned! .......Gary
  16. Hello all... Just to let you know, the photos of my early K'Horn project are being posted as the re-firb begins and continues. You can find these in the TECHNICAL QUESTIONS area under 1968 K'horns. Thanks and enjoy ) ...Gary PS. can you post more then ONE photo per mailing ?? I can only transmit one at a time....
  17. Hello everyone. Finally the photos are starting to be organized. These were taken over this past weekend at the beginning of the project. You will notice the side panel on the horn assembly. This was because the upper portion of the side could be seen in the room, as a low wall was made for the speakers on each side. A HUGE Salt Box livingroom with 15' ceilings is where these speakers originally were installed... ALSO, you will notice the signature on the inside of the bass horn cabinet. Take a look and enjoy. NEWS: Last night, I worked on the crossovers. Cleaned and rebuilt with the new caps from Bob Crites. They look great, can't wait to hear them. ..........Gary
  18. Hello again Rob. Can you direct me to the `As You Go' thread? Can't seem to find it, even with an advanced search.. Thanks, Gary
  19. Thanks Rob. I will look for the `as you go' thread... Take care, Gary
  20. Hello everyone. I posted a note in the `announcement' area about my finally after a years time, carted my K'horns into the music room to start cleaning and working on the xover etc... Photos are being taken at all steps btw.... 1) Tech at Klipsch said these were from sometime in 1968 by the serial# I gave him. After dismantling the side grills (for cleaning) and the horn section from the woofer cabinet as well as removing the xovers for cap change out (thank you Bob Crites!), I decided to check into the woofer access cover. 2) I was told that speakers of this age could have some cone deterioration, so I felt I needed to take a look at least. Well, after much gentle prying on the panel I was able to remove it and take a look inside.. 3) I found that the woofer has a SQUARE ceramic magnet !!! It looks to me more like something from the 1970ies.. Meaning, were not Alnico magnets used in the 60ies? My 1976 Leslie speaker (bought it brand new) has a VERY similar 15" driver with this magnet on it ... 4) FINDINGS! First off, the woofer of the speaker I checked on so far looks brand new (well, it IS well protected in there ) I was thinking it may have been replaced, but the hardware (screw heads) at the hookup terminals on the INSIDE of the panel are all powder white corrosion and the solder on the lugs of the speaker look like they have never been re-touched since new. This one is a K-33-M Perhaps someone would know more?? (I'm still learning about these things) Original or replaced? Hmmmmm. 5) Interesting also is, the wood cleats that hold the woofer baffle in place STILL HAVE SHOP DUST on them AND the original handprints of the installer! I took photos of this, as the dust on the cleat is on the VERTICAL SIDE with handprints, and that side of the woofer is spotless ! 6) SIGNATURE found ! As a pipeorgan builder, we at our shop will write in pencil a brief history (if a restoration/rebuild job) on the interior of the organ components with company name, date and signatures of all who worked on the piece. I was pleased to find a hand signed (in pencil) `Terry Powel - Hope Arkansas' on the inside front horn baffle. Anyone seen this before in their K'horns ??? Ok, thats all the news - questions from here. I will post photos (direct me as to where the best area on the forum to display them should be?) Regards, Gary PS. I will remove the panel on the other cabinet and hope to find that they match.
  21. Thanks Tom... I am planning on starting with the cleaning today (Sunday)... Since my grill cloth is a white `weaved' cloth, I am wondering if anyone has had experience with cleaning them. I don't want to vacuum the dirt `through' the grill where the horn drivers are, so maybe blotting with a sponge of soap solution or fantastik ??? Well, I got lots to do and lucky very little in the way of touching up wood nicks etc. Let me know if we should take this conversation into a different topic area, ie 2 channel or other? Again, thanks for the welcome - reply. Gary
  22. Hello everyone. You may remember me from some months ago... I'm the fellow that was willed the 1968 K'horns which have been in storage in my CLEAN garage for some time. When I joined the forum, I had mentioned my music room with all the organs etc. in it and how room had to be made for the setting up of the K'horns which were placed in a late friend's will. As of today (Sunday 26th) my buddy (who bought my C3) sent the movers to take that Hammond organ, and then, for the first time in a year, the K'horns were moved from the garage to the music room!! YEAAAAAH! (O: For ease, I took the horn section off AND the side grill panels so we could get them through the door (carefully hand carried). You may also remember that I bought NEW caps for my xovers from Bob Crites. THIS will now begin the cleaning and restoration of these fine speakers of which I STILL have never heard. Many have asked for photos, and I will take them starting with the speakers all in pieces until they are finished and every screw is tightened and the xovers have been cleaned and retrofitted with the new caps. These K'horns have the WHITE grills and I don't know how common this was, as I have NOT seen any on the forum as of yet. So, there you have the update and I wanted you all to know, especially those that I had just met way back and didn't want to leave hangin' [] Keep you all posted soon. Regards, Gary
