  1. you can also call them. i don't know too much about blue jeans tech support but i know Cable solutions has great tech support. the guy there doesn't even try to sell the most expencive stuff, unless your application really needs it.
  2. well i am not the smartest when it comes to this but i would think it would be best to use one of the bedrooms as a dedicated media room instead of that living room. if you are just looking at putting a tv and some small speakers around the room, anything you do will be fine. if you are looking for the "movie" experience than you will need a dedicated media room. if you get the plasma and place it over the fire place, then i would go with small speakers around the room, no more than a 5.1. the small speakers i am suggesting are the ones that come with their own stand or at least the ones you put on a stand and not mount on a wall. just my 2 cents. i hope it helps a little.
  3. well i looked over the Dolby digital set up and this is how it would look in my room. they had all variable dimensions so i drew the min, middle, and max. i also color coded them. too bad i couldn't install some kind of hanging speaker bracket that allowed me to travel those dimensions. the TV is 7' 10", that should be far enough. also, you can call me cheap all you want but i decided to not get the big expensive home media furniture. i am going to go with the "executive chair." you can get them at wally world for around $80 each. the reason i am doing this is, there is a movie theater near me called studio movie grill. the entire movie theater only uses the executive chair. i enjoy my movies in those so i will enjoy the movies at my house in the same chair. dolby digital set up.pdf
  4. yeah, thx seems to be a little complicated. i don't have the resourses to keep the whole package together. i was curious, with the dolby, how far from the tv should you be?
  5. i use to be, that is why i asked falcon if he worked there. i worked there for 4 years. i now live in texas.
  6. falcon 20x, do you work at little rock???
  7. well since i didn't know i need bi polar (thats a real funny name for speakers) speakers, the thx way just might not work. i saw the the set up you listed, that way will fit too. i guess i could just switch it over to that. all i have to to is seperate the rears. (maybe tweek the fronts a little)
  8. okay, i will look at that web page. at first glance it placement looked the same. i am sorry i wan't intending i was going to buy those products now. i plan on just getting the room built, hooking everything up, and if it doesn't sound right then i would look into those types of treatments, but i would need the measuring device first. i hope that is something i could rent or for better piece of mind pay someone to figure out if there is any problems and exackly how to fix it. i know if i do it, i won't be 100% sure i am right, but if i hire someone i will have 100% assurance that what ever they do, it would be better than my best guess. if you live in texas or near rockwall i will invite you down. i am with you about the whole thx non groupie. i am only using their web site so i can get a good speaker/room placement. other than that i don't own any thx stuff (well my playstation has a thx optical, but i only bought that because it was the cheapest choice).
  9. can't go wrong with sunfire, if you want to go cheaper, try www.outlawaudio.com
  10. mas, here is the other way i was thinking of installing the surrounds. i know it won't fix all the problems, but maybe it won't be as bad. let my know your opinion. thx dimentions 1.pdf
  11. i did some reading last night... a lot and now i know a little what you are talking about. i found 3 web pages that has the tools to help me make my room better. those pages are: http://www.silentsource.com/afoams-sonex.html http://quietsolution.com/html/quietrock.html?gclid=CMuStPXp0ooCFQlcSgodJwfJeQ http://www.atsacoustics.com/item--ATS-Acoustic-Panel-24x24x4--1007.html now going along with what you said, i do understand that i can't just buy a bunch of this stuff and hang it everwhere. one it will cost and arm and a leg, two, it would create a different problem. i could have the "quiet rock" installed into the room, that wouldn't be hard i just don't know if that is a product i really need. i can care less if the sound travels out of the room, it's my house not a recording studio. i am how ever rething the placement of my surround speakers. according to thx, i can place them between 90 and 110 degrees. if i place them at 90 degrees i believe i would have a greated problem then if i place them at 110 degrees. i know i am going to have sound bounce everywhere, but at least it won't be back and forth directly over my head. (i think).
  12. okay, doing the whole arch thing with velvet covering the entire room is a bad idea. alright with the small room with a wall....i should "splay" the walls with absorbent material? my only issue i am really concerned with is the echos in the small enclosed room. it's looking like i won't get around it no matter what, i can just lessen it, so i am finding out. what my mind is coming to realize is no matter what i do in a house you wont' get a true media room. it seems to me you would have to construct a building with all the right media materials, and the room would have to be really big and not feasible for a typical home owner. if you know of a good product i can put on the walls to help with sound absorption please let me know. i call look into bass traps i guess after the room is done. i just want a room to have my media stuff in and it sounds good. i know someone out there will tell me it could be better and if they want to volunteer their time i will happily accept it.
  13. does anyone for sure where i can to get some research on how to set up my room? i know it's not the perferct sturcture, but i would like to get a good use out of it. i am interested the hanging the velvet all around and how that plays out with accustics. i am just afraid that since i am in such a small room i will hear a bunch of echos and won't like the final product.
  14. okay i have a wrench to throw in. i am rethinking the whole "wall" idea and going with an arch way of some sort. one side of the media room will be windows so i plan on hanging some thick material over it. would i get better accutics if i put the same material on all 4 sides? if i do then wouldn't it be a litte better and perhaps cheaper to just have some arch way covered by that material? when the room is not in use i could just have something holding back the curtains. i am also think of resale values. i don't plan on selling my house ever but sometimes life dictates what you will or won't do, i can't control that. i just figure if someone wants to buy my house down the road and they don't like the idea of a media room, they just take the curtains down and the room is still open. just thinking....please provide some feed back.
  15. wrench, sorry you had trouble with the cable companys. in any technical device there is always going to be issues. if you find someone you are comfortable with stick with them. again, sorry those cables didn't work out for you. tenzip, the solder break down accurs because the solder is not a "perfect" metal. depending on what the company uses will depend on the performance. even "silver solder" isn't pure silver, its 95-5. thats a very good solder and only used in extreme cases. i am not trying to tell you if you buy a soldered cable, a year later it breaks down. it takes several years and sometimes under extreme conditions. the experiance i have with this is i work in the avaiation field. i was military for 5yrs and now i do private jets, about 6 years now. to date not "private" jet that is over 10 million doesn't use ANY type of solder connection because they break down and the innefficent way they are terminated. i don't have any web pages that i know of, you can google search it if you want. some smaller planes still use soldered connections because they tend to be purchased by people and not companys. a solder cable will work just fine but i feel through my experience that the crip cable the canare uses is superior, especally if you take the time you will have with the cables. i have had mine several years now and they still look great and have very tight connections. in fact they get so tight, when i unpluged one it took the connector off the tv!
  16. lmaf! that would be great if i could get them at my house! maybe with beer and pizza i can convince them. just like fishing, you won't catch a fish unless you have good bait! yeah, now, i know to read the manual. thats how i discovered i had a bunch of wrong settings! i understand how to do that now, too bad i didn't from the beginning! i'm just not good enough to know all the other stuff. i guess i will eventually figure it out...hopefully!
  17. Shane, don't waist your time or money. go to blue jeans cable or cable solutions. they have the best cables out there. they sell the same stuff you can you try and price match them. the cables i am suggesting are Canare cables. they are crimped on instead of soldered. they are even cheaper and will almost never fail on you. the solder after a LONG while MAY break down. Cable solutions: http://stores.ebay.com/Cable-Solutions Blue Jeans: http://www.bluejeanscable.com/index.htm just remember both companys have and use different cables. you will most likely have to call them and they will tell you what will work best for your application. i know Cable solutions tech rep, he is very nice and will talk to you for hours if you let him. i believe his name is mark. good luck
  18. if the room stays at 15x13 it's not too square. i cant shrink it any more because i would at least like 4 people in there. i thought about having 2 front and back but i dont' think if have the length. the sides of the room will be stright up and the front and back have slopes (you can see it on the floor plan i have attached in this tread). i don't know those dimentions yet, i am waiting on the builder to call me. thank you for helping, i just don't know how to use your advice. what is "corner bass traps?" is that an addition structure? what kind of "absorption" do i need to look at and how would i know where to place it? you mentions software, are you meaning i could buy some program for my computer, input my room dimentions and it would tell me some things to do?
  19. the only problem with the helper part is, i am the only one of my friends that is into computers or ht. it's really sad to me. i get all excited and they just yawn. i hate to admit this but i just recently found out a setting on my tuner i had set to max meant my volume couldn't be turned up loud. i forgot the actual name, but it's called "night listing mode." i did some reading and made a few changes and now it sounds great but i had it that way for at least 8 years! it's really embarrassing but at least now i know. i never bothered setting any of settings. i will take my time with this set up, it will be in my house and not an apartment.
  20. yeah i know about the stands. i will tell you this if you take standard copper solid core wire, and wire your system and then take the best 12awg wire with 1000 strands (i don't know the actual number) i don't think you will hear a difference. now maybe if you had access to certain measuring devices, i am sure there is a difference.. i will give you a high five for blue jeans, awesome canare cables and the guys there are helpful. i also like cable solutions, the guy mark, he'll talk to you as long as you let him. very informative
  21. this is why i am not upgrading to an 1080p tv...yet... to get all the quality you need: 1080p tv blue ray player (around $1000) blue ray disks blue ray processor (if you use the hdmi) all equals way toooooo much $ if you got it, go ahead. wait a few years and it will all be much cheaper. there is a difference in quality. if you have a sony store near you go there and see the difference. there is a difference, but is it worth the cost to have to upgrade EVERYTHING. good luck in your decision.
  22. wstrickland1, good luck in doing that...you could also bribe the workers, slip them a few bucks and they will most likely do it. i have to say david weekely is doing so much for in in regards to that. they are taking stuff out of the room (closet and vent line) adding a 1/2 garage (it's not an option on the floor plan but they will do it), and other little stuff. mas, i will be honest, i couldn't understand anything you were talking about. i am sorry if i am convaying that i "know everything" or have a "perfect thx room." i know thats what i typed, i just meant, the chairs, speakers, and angled dimentions fit in a room that was 15x13. if i keep the room to 13' wide then the other portion of the room will be a big game room. i could move the wall out to 14' but then i will only have a 15x10 game room. i am willing to have only 4" from a corner of an angled media chair to get both rooms at a good size. i don't plan on showcasing my "media" room around the world, it suites my needs for me and my family. if i wanted to i could make the entire 15x25 room into a media room. i think for me having both is a better option. i am not even smart enough to tune everything in like you stated. my knowlede will end after i get the stuff in the room, hook it up, angle it, and turn it on. after that it's a shot in the dark.
  23. okay, i have the official thx approved room. i got the web page from my new best friend Tenzip (www.thx.com) {i should have really thought about that first} i used all the dimentions and formulas that thx stated. did the 45 degree lines, the tv viewing angle is less than 40 degrees like it states, the surrounds in the back are together, and the side surrounds are 90 degrees. here is the room drawin with all the correct dimentions and i was supprised that the correct room size would be 15'x13' i have to say having autocad and being able to use it just saved me several hours of tweeking the speakers and figuring out what room size is best and all the other headaches that goes along with it. not to mention you draw in true scale so you see how your room will be. now with this plan i can install some pvc pipes so my wires will slide easily in the attic. better yet i can give the dimentions of the pvc tubes and someone will put them in before the roof is installed, that would be worth the extra money (if they charge me). thx dimentions.pdf
  24. okay, i have the official thx approved room. i got the web page from my new best friend Tenzip (www.thx.com) {i should have really thought about that first} i used all the dimentions and formulas that thx stated. did the 45 degree lines, the tv viewing angle is less than 40 degrees like it states, the surrounds in the back are together, and the side surrounds are 90 degrees. here is the room drawin with all the correct dimentions and i was supprised that the correct room size would be 15'x13' i have to say having autocad and being able to use it just saved me several hours of tweeking the speakers and figuring out what room size is best and all the other headaches that goes along with it. now with this plan i can install some pvc pipes so my wires will slide easily in the attic. thx dimentions.pdf
  25. here is the perposed 15'x14' room with the "THX" approved set up. you know i should have know about that web site and checked it out. well i have to say, if you are going to follow thx guidelines you really don't need a big room. with the fronts at a 45 degree angle it pretty much sets the room distance and width. since the rears can be "set or adjusted" for how far back they they could be right behind you and it wouldn't matter. 15'x14' thx set up.pdf
