  1. What a "blast from the past." My father is a retired Air Force Colonel. In the late 60's and 70's, all of his crew members seemed to have Akai reel to reel decks. It seemed to be "THE brand" to own. (they all bought them at tremendous discounts overseas.) I sure hope someone picks this up and gets some use from it. All the best, Joe ps..........................I took advantage of his last overseas tour of duty during my junior year in high school. I saved my lawn cutting dough and splurged on a complete Pioneer system. 1974. Like a crazy man, I gave all of that great old vintage equipment to my brother when I "upgraded" during the 80's to small bookshelves, cheap SS amps, etc. etc. Those speakers are still in his home and I just can't be an Indian giver. (some of you remember them.......all solid walnut, wooden grill, weighed a ton for the relative size) I may have to "dress in all black" and pay my little brother a middle of the night visit?? oh, and while I am there ****** back my Pioneer SX 1010!!!!!!!!!!!)
  2. I enjoy: Diana Krall-many like her "smoky" alto voice. I do! As also mentioned, she plays with extremely talented musicians and her stuff is very well-recorded. Patricia Barber Norah Jones Lizz Wright Carla Cook Joni Mitchell Linda Ronstadt
  3. Sorry! I thought you referenced the same link I sent out. That is funny! The paper flapping. (or not) Anyway, sorry for the "misunderstanding" about my link. All the best, Joe
  4. Glad you enjoyed it. If you like the intro song playing on the clip (Diana Krall--Temptation) try her website and get the Live In Montreal DVD. I don't have a surround system, as I am simply a 2-channel guy, but you will love this DVD on stereo. She does do "Temptation" at the concert, as well as many other great hits. I have almost burned it up I think. (as an added "bonus" I think she is smoking hot too!) Take care, Joe
  5. Interesting video about "Greek Audiophiles" ck out some of those turntables......jeesh.....
  6. Oops...I meant "Joe". Don't know why I called you "Dave" just then...too many brain farts in my old age![:$] Oh yeah, you'll be pleased with McIntosh. I've owned and used an MC7200, MC2100, and my trusty MC250 with the Cornwalls, and they've all put a big grin on my face.[] If I hadn't gone to tubes, I'd still be using a SS Mac. I'd love to hear Mac's valve amps (MC30 monoblocks, or an MC240 or either a new or old MC275), but that'll have to wait awhile (being broke sucks)! Jim, Thanks for the feedback, and I am anxious as you can tell, to pair up my Klipsch with the new Mac stuff. By the way, I know exactly where Lakeland is. My best friend spend his last 10 years in Sarasota and I visited a few times each year. (unfortunately he passed away last year) Take care Jim, Joe
  7. LOL! That's rich (especially the purists barfing)! From what I've learned over the years is that Klipsch, no matter if they're Heritage, Reference, Synergy, Legend, Epic, whatever...they all sound great with tubes, SS, digital, et al. As long as the source is clean and the amplification of high quality, they will all make Klipsch sing. Feed 'em crappy wattage and they'll reveal the horrors of such ill-fated power! And Dave, thanks for answering my question.[Y] Well then mine should sound really good. I just treated myself to a McIntosh MA 6300 and MCD 201 on Friday. No tone controls at all on the integrated. Of course it only has 100 watts per, but it still should drive Klipsch just fine. 2007 will be some good listening over here. Take care, Joe
  8. Wish I could have JJK! Twinsburg was the home to a former customer--PDM- a pharmaceutical management company. I know it well. Would have been no bad mouthing from me........I am still learning. Take care! Joe
  9. That Mr. Larry is a very good question. I will email Ms Donna and inquire, I would also like to know what kind of camera was used. The ones in our home were taken by dtel an our future son-in-law, Johnny. The pic of the PWK logo is certainly one of my favorites. I will inquire as to what type of camera Johnny used. The box photo(in the house) and the group photo (in the house) were taken with a Kodak Easy Share 4530, 5.0 megapixel. Thanks again for the welcome, and suggesting I view this thread. Fun times! Nicely done as well. Take care, Joe
  10. Ok, I now realize that I need to hit "quote" so that my posts make some sort of sense with respect to whom I am replying to. (yes, I am a newbie to serious gear, and well.........I just never liked computers. Period.) Joe
  11. ps.............i will also add that Klipsch looks like a company that REALLY takes care of people. they are a real enthusiastic team in my opinion. (sorry I was a marketing guy) As you know, basketball is king in Indiana. Well, Klipsch has 2 very very nice basketball courts in the rear of the employee parking lot. (located in a very nice wooded area of town) They have a full workout facility and nice looking cafeteria that I saw as well. However, the most important thing is the people. I am still not totally sure of which model I am getting, but one thing I can say for sure is that I will NEVER get another brand of speakers than Klipsch. (I had vintage Pioneer walnut cabinet style in the mid 70's, Infinity bookshelves, Klipsch bookshelves, et. al.) I am staying with Klipsch. They have a nice enough "menu" to meet all needs and ears in my humble opinion. Take care, Joe
  12. jt, you don't sound at all like a jerk. great questions. I live a mere 3 hour drive from Indy, and my broker works there as well. As you may know, most retail stores (at least here in Ohio) do NOT stock La Scalas or Khorns. I had never heard either and was darn curious. I called and set up an appointment through the sales representative who has Ohio and Indiana as his geographic area. ( ie the sale of the speakers would come from his terrritory so he was glad to help! NOT to imply they would not help if they were not going to necessarily generate a sale. These are GREAT people. In fact, I learned about the listening room from a tech at their support desk!) I would definitely recommend calling ahead and setting up an appointment. In fact, I am not sure they would or could accomodate "walk-ins" since these guys are busy doing their everyday jobs but take time out from that. I met with a great guy from engineering as well as the salesperson. It was just a great afternoon, and I learned a ton. (we seriously cranked some great tunes too!!!!) Take care, Joe
  13. Yes, I think you are correct. I am a SS guy, so I am not that familiar with this brand. (I am sure they are made in China and sounded very good.) A tube integrated and tube CD player. (at least I think the CD player was tubes, but I know for sure the integrated was......could not help but notice all the big, massive glass tubes!) Did the 60th anniv. Khorns sound ok? Well..............you already know...... I am a "beginner" of sorts and jumping right in. I don't know all the "science" a lot of posters here know and use in their descriptions of power, amps, etc. I can only say that I DEFINITELY now know how efficient horn drivers are and how UNREAL they sound in the mid-range. In a "newbie" way of describing it, when we did an A/B/A from the La Scala to the RF-83 and back----it literally sounds like you are moved from an usher in a jazz club from the 15th row to standing in front of the stage. I like jazz and took my own CD's. (Krall etc.) Those mids mean more than I had thought. (had never heard Heritage line stuff prior.) Of course, from a newbie perspective, it makes sense to consider the mids the most important since most of the sound comes from the mids. (unless you are listening to a string bass solo of course. ha ha) All the best, Joe
  14. Dtel's wife, Thanks so much for the warm welcome. I am anxious to check out the thread and posts you referenced. Once again, thank you very much. Joe
  15. I had the great pleasure of visiting the home office in Indy this week. What a pleasure! I sat in the listening room and auditioned Khorns, La Scalas and RF 83s. (driven with tube gear) What a treat! The folks at Klipsch are truly a team of "family folks" who provide excellent hospitality with extreme professionalism and knowledge. I really enjoyed it a lot. All the best, Joe
  16. Makes sense Mike, and thanks for the education. I do know that most "purists" don't use tone controls or loudness filters. I will give this more thought. Thanks again.
  17. Thanks Mike. You guys on this board really know your stuff. I appreciate it. I am sorry about the miscommunication. I do NOT even have the McIntosh 6300 yet. I am doing it all through one local dealer to help "leverage" my price. (they sell both Klipsch & Mac) I was a little concerned about the 6300 not being enough, but just could NOT justify moving up to 250 watts for another grand. I know Klipsch can sound great on low wattage. Thanks for the headsup about taking my own music. They told me that too when I set it all up. I am super excited about owning my first piece of "blue eyed" gear, but hope I don't miss the "loudness button" I have enjoyed using on all previous equipment to boost the bass since I do listen at low volumes a lot. We'll see. You guys know too much about engineering for me. Your volts, dB etc are still above my head. I am a science/pharmaceutical guy, not electrical at all. I AM WORKING on it and reading my rear off. Thanks again.......................Joe
  18. Thanks a lot for the feedback. I am not interested in surround sound---just a simple 2 channel guy, but I do watch my TV through my sound system. I plan on buying my 1st piece of Mac gear to drive the RF-83. (if I get them.) I am leaning toward the newest integrated ie the MA 6300. I realize the downside of this amp versus the 6500 & 6900. eg only 100 WPC, vs. 250 along with the "potential issue" of not having any tone controls and no loudness switch. I hope it will still sound great. I have always wanted McIntosh, and thought with Klipsch having the reputation of outstanding efficiency, the 6300 @ 100 watts should be plenty. eg-------I am currently driving Klipsch F-3 (I know, I know don't laugh) with a Denon receiver rated @ 100 watts per.......and it is PLENTY. believe me. I am actually going to the Klipsch home office this Tuesday to visit their listening room. (other business in Indy so I had to work it in!!!!!!!!) They have some Khorns and La Scalas set up and I also asked for the RF-83's if possible. (they are going to run em all with Cary tube gear which won't give me a clear idea of how the Mac SS amp would sound, but hey I am a "visitor" and will graciously accept whatever they do for me.) Thanks again. ps.............don't you agree a McIntosh @ 100 watts per should be plenty for ANY Klipsch speaker? (I am a beginner.......as if you couldn't tell by the above gear I have..........eg a "recevier")
  19. For those of you who either own or have heard the RF-83, how do they sound versus eg La Scala or Khorns? I know they are all very different speakers with different sounds. I guess what I am wondering, is for a small room, are the RF-83's a great or just a pretty good sounding speaker. I was considering some La Scalas, but with constraints on postioning and room size, I am leaning toward the RF-83's. (without actually hearing the La Scalas, the bass response seems like a concern vs the RF-83) Thanks in advance. Joe
  20. I used to think the old rule of thumb was to spend roughly twice the amount on speakers over the amplification. After a lot of reading, it seems to me that many of you that are much more experienced have much more $ invested in amplification. I am considering the RF-83's and a new McIntosh integrated 6300. Therefore, my speakers would be approximately 2 grand and my amp would be 3 grand. Is this a silly move, or completely rational? I know the 6300 only has 100 W per, but the Klipsch reputation is built on extreme efficiency. What are your thoughts? Thanks again. (I have a lot of learning down the road.) Much appreciated, Joe
  21. As always, thanks for the quick replies and help! (even from "home office" folks!) PS-Amy, maybe our paths will cross on December 12th. I am meeting with one of your sales reps in your home office to visit the listening room. What a treat that will be! All the best, Joe Morgan
  22. I still see the RF-7 pictured on the website Page #2 under "floorstanding models." I was under the impression the RF-7 was discontinued. ?????????? More importantly.................For those of you "in the know" about these models,,,,,,,,,,,,,,how does the RF-83 stand up? I am considering a pair. Thanks!
  23. Thanks so much for the suggestion. Right now, I am moving rather slowly through this process. In fact, I spoke with a Klipsch sales rep yesterday, and am going to visit their home office next month and take a tour of the "listening room." I am now considering the La Scala due the design providing more flexibility in room placement vs the Khorns. I do have a concern about the bass response, but I know "it's only on paper" so to speak. I just have to hear them for myself with my music. So that is where I am right now. Thanks again everybody!
  24. Columbus. Thanks a bunch for the feedback. Joe
