  1. I must confess I am enjoying growing older to many degrees. I've had my hearing checked lately and it passed with flying colors. I am losing some hair and no longer let it grow down to my a$$ anymore. I'm still amazed at the generosity of women. I am thankful that I listen and learn rather than mouth off and pi$$ everyone off around me. Give me a few shots of bad whiskey on top of a few beers and I have a tendency to push my point rather bluntly and show my butt though. Growing older has taught me when to shut up and when to sit down before someone knocks me down. I do have a tendency to push the limit and just start crap when I'm bored too. I don't pick on a bunch of old deaf farts when I want some action though.

Good luck in your education and find a woman to end the boredom. Cheez & rice, that kid has a lot of posts. Maybe I'd better study for my finals.

    I'm bored also

  2. I just payed the bill without it even crossing my mind someone could be doing something like that. Just me and my son live here but I always have audio equipment running, TV's, satellite, clocks, microwave, coffee pot, lighting, etc in use.

I watched a TV special about conserving energy not long ago and the hosts were talking about all the wasted energy through the lights and LEDs of all the appliances on stand by mode constantly running. They claimed these alone could account for up to 25% of total electricity usage

In my apartment building there are 4 meters per service box. The gentlemen upstairs are construction workers from out of town. All they had to do was loosen the retaining bands on the meters, pull and switch meters, tighten the bands, and I'm paying their bill. The meters are read and billed by number.

I've made an effort to reduce my energy consumption in the last few months by using higher quality/lower wattage bulbs, changed to battery operated clocks where practical, and just trying to not waste energy where possible. I've cut my power consumption by nearly 40% and haven't lost any comforts at all.

Good luck figuring it all out.

  3. High electric bill? About a year and a half ago I had some new neighbors move in upstairs. My electric bill doubled. I have a lot of electronics running constantly and didn't think much about it. Then one of my neighbors had a fire in their apartment and the Indianapolis Power and Light came and shut down the power to all the meters in our building. I received notice that my meter had been switched with the neighbor upstairs. IPL went back on the bills to when the neighbors upstairs moved in and adjusted my bill. I had over 6 months free service coming after adjustments. Apparently according to IPL this is common and something to be aware of. They have investigators just for this.

You may want to call your electric service company and have them research this for you.

  4. Depending on the cosmetics and operating condition of the verts I'd say the verts should be at least $250 higher in value. The verticals might need going through. Crossovers and diaphrams may need replacing. If so, you might have an "even wash" trade going. There are quite a few more Forte IIs available than there are Verticals. It's your money or merchandise, do what makes you happy. Don't worry about what someone else thinks when it comes to audio.

As Michael said, we were both happy with the trade.

  5. I emailed him and he sent pics. Walnut oiled, black grills. Nice CWIIs or 1.5s I think. Pics were close ups without macrozoom on the labels and they were fuzzy at best. He needed to downsize the files as they took forever to load. I started forwarding them until I saw the file size(dialup) and about 1/4 through I cancelled the forward and deleted them.

  6. Thank you Craig,

It's great you take the time to pass along good info. I love listening to the older gear I haven't had a chance to listen to before. It gives me a different flavor of what's been available and the sound as it's evolved over the years. I'm just a "parts changer" in the field and have no design or manufacturing experience. Your shared practical experience and knowledge is most appreciated.

BTW, Keep the name and Logo.

  7. Congratulations on the coming nuptuals. I think it's absolutely fabulous.

I'd still be married if i remembered the basic and simple rules for a happy marriage.

    1: Think before you answer

2: Tatoo anniversarys and birthdays where you are reminded regularly of the dates.

3: Have glass tops made for the CWs instead of yelling about plants on your most prized possessions.

4: Buy her a system for her use and let her "help" pick it out.

5: Just shut up and go with the flow. Remember this was YOUR choice. Live with it.

6: Don't Panic, take a deep breath, and remember she wants YOU.

7: Be happy and cherish the great gift you've been lucky to find.

I'd be happy to lie and give you an alibi for any purchases or trips concerning new audio.

  8. Bryan,

I actually bring mine up much slower starting at 5V for a half hour, 10V/half hour, 20V/half hour and in 10V incriments for a half hour each to about 50 and then about an hour between incriments up to 80V. I guess I've just gotten 2 old pieces in a row with hums. I wanted to check to see if I was pushing them too hard too fast. I've gone quite a while without any problems and the last 2 were extremely nice and I didn't figure on both having problems. The tubes all tested good and if not were replaced before heating up the units. I"ll just have to go through them earlier than anticipated. Any info is helpful.

    Thanks,

    Harry

  9. I HAD Direct and had all kinds of weird problems including my system being down more than it should have. I've gone to Dish and other than typical volume variations from time to time (not bad but could be better) it's been very good

  10. NOS, I Definitely fit into your statement. I just got back into them big time. Raising a kid on my own, working, taking care of my father has taken the time away from my music I've always been into. I've had to simplify many things that aren't as important as family. I have the time again now that the kid is older, and I'm taking time for the pleasures in life again. I'm still looking forward to listening to your amps. I hear many good things about them.

  11. Morning OB,

I am in total agreement with you. I can't wait until they are all gone. I will be very happy then. Non Lethal weapons should be the norm. If we can get the criminals re-armed with non-lethal weapons and keep them responsible we will have a better world. There has to be a way to get rid of EVERY ONE OF THEM. Not a SINGLE ONE left. I doubt this will happen. I think we should employ the handgun criminals and have them shoot the tobacco producers. I'm an addicted smoker too. Then we can turn them all in and live happily ever after. I guess the Lobbyists and paid off politicians do run our country though.

  12. Good morning Doc,

What kind of music do I listen to? Hmm, let's see here. At home I'd say my preferences depend on my mood. A lot of Blues, Rock, lighter Jazz, let me look at the latest stack of cd's and vinyl that hasn't been put up yet, Clapton Pilgrim on the TT from last night, Melissa Ethridge, Iron Butterfly, Santana , Trower, Billy Cobham, early 70's stuff. When I go out I listen to variety bands that play some country and semi Rock.(that's where the women are and cold long neckers), Concerts of many kinds. I love music. I played in bands over the years, some of my best friends still play, (we have some good home grown bands here in Indiana), I just thought about it, but most of the musicians are still using tube amps on their equipment. (SS for PA and DJ), oh yea, Motown, Stones, Beatles are always good. Just normal stuff for an old fart my age. I do work on sound equipment for a buddy that's a sound man with his own studio (Monfort). I'm not saying tubes play LOUDER, just the normal hitting of the music seems driven much better. Stereotyping anything is silly. I buy and sell audio equipment.Ebay and audiogon, my business. Let's just say as a whole, tubes sound better to ME. I like SS. I like tube. It's like any other part of the audio world, There is NO ONE perfect piece. Please, enjoy what you like in the way you like. Hey, what do I know, I like the sound of a properly driven K-600 & K-55. I prefer the Crites CT125 over a K-77 generally. After all, it's all about personal tastes and enjoying the music. AND the equipment. It's a killer hobby/passion that apparently we all enjoy. I love a good keyboard player Doc. I love live music best.I personally "get a rush" from a good Strat player. I seem to be able to re-create the live sound best with the tubes I'm running. The live "presence" is there like I'm sitting in front of the band.

I just had my hearing checked at the VA. It's still good. Though a bit selective I'm sure. My ears though I guess.

and about Crown, they ain't made sh.. since Harman dug their claws in. Just like they did to JBL, vega, epi, Infinity, etc. Just MY opinion

  13. No disrespect taken. I appreciate all views. I respect all of our rights. This is still America! Rights are hard to put up with sometimes. But this is what makes America great.

I think it is so nice we can discuss a senseless tradgedy and try to think of a solution or a "patch" no matter how tough it is or how much we differ in our opinions. We do agree that something needs done. It is easier when the moment is fresh and burning our hearts. Let us hope the solutions are correct. I hope there are answers that can make sense. This hurts me. I see the faces and my eyes tear up, my chest tightens up, my throat feels like it is going to swell shut. I feel helpless, want to scream at this waste, and want it fixed NOW.
