  1. You tell em Schu....more bunk. Would be nice if posters would not generalize what "most" people on this forum do or do not do, without first having been in "most" members listening rooms or living rooms. For myself, I use the absolutely most expensive speaker wire available, regardless of construction, condition or reviews. I mean, doesn't everyone here? Oh, wait, I didn't mean everyone, I meant most. I'm willing to post a poll, can this site do that?
  2. The old Teslas. Not available new anymore (at least not from the old factory). I'd like to give the new Mullard re-issues a try.
  3. Most of the guys here use zip cord. I like the AudioQuest solid copper wires. Type2, Type4, Rocket 44 are nice cables. I'm not a fan of stranded copper.
  4. Personally I wouldn't buy a turntable unless it was a really good one. 100 bucks ain't going to do it.
  5. Penga's are nice cords in the budget range. So I got that out of the way but let me share my experience for what it's worth. I'm a pro cable guy. I like my cables. I use my cables. I have bought a few brands of higher end power cables and for me, I couldn't tell a difference in sound. I'm going with tigerwoodhorns on this one with the exception that the big power cables do LOOK good and I guess that is worth something?
  6. Remember a pair of really great wires will sound better than 4 good wires at the same cost.
  7. Jimbo, Your problem is not the tracking of the cartridge. It really sounds like you don't have the correct RIAA curve working for you. However it could be that the quality of the table and cart just isn't good enough. My experience 30 years ago was that you need a pretty serious TT rig to match even a cheap CD player. CD players are really good (for the price). I had a budget busting TT rig back in the day. It would probably take a 3500-5000 dollar table to match that today. Now back to your issue. A table like the Audio-Technica LP120 you bought is not going to blow you away if you already had a decent CD player. You can put a better cartridge on a cheaper table but you'll have to track it at higher settings. It takes a good arm to go below 2 grams. At any rate tracking is not your issue. I'm thinking your TT/cart is not good enough. I really recommend calling a TT specialist and listen to what they have to say.
  8. You might be able to save what you have. If you can re-wire the table so it's just a table and cartridge then you can plug it into your phono section, you might have something that is passable. The Emos that I have heard are a bit lean and that's not working for you but there are ways around that also. A good table does bass very well and that's why people spend a lot of money on tables and cartridges. A good cartridge on a consumer table can work but you'll want to track above 2 grams. If you toss out what you have you'll want an audiophile all in one table in the 500 dollar price range (Music Hall, Pro-Ject, Rega).
  9. 5 or 7 tube mono blocks start to add up to real money and the heat load is pretty high. Maybe not the best idea.
  10. Just get that idea right out of your head. I'm not a Bose basher but just about anything will sound better than the new 901s. Like I say they worked on solving the efficiency issues and totally ruined them. If they remade the first series I would support your project but the newer ones blow.
  11. OMG he brought some Bose, lol. Funny you should mention that. I owned a pair of 901 series one, back in the day. So one day I thought, why not play with a new pair of series VIs? Oh God they are dreadful. Bose pretty much engineered the sound out of those things. The series ones were fun just as the Stereophile test wrote back in the day but the new ones are just terrible. Sorry, no speakers for sale at this time, I just moved things around and put some into storage under the stairs. Oh...I do have a little used pair of 901s...cheap!
  12. What kind? I might get burned at the stake if I reveal that...
  13. Excellent idea and then call then for direct conversational help on their toll-free number. Make sure you have your credit card handy.
  14. You need a Cornwall-shelf. You can use the speaker top as a credenza.
  15. I'm simplifying my system. Well, better wording might be I'm simplifying my systems, five systems to be exact. I needed more space in my small music room so I got rid of my large speakers and bought a pair of small stand mounted monitors. Buying more stuff is simplifying isn't it?
  16. Did you really say they have a sound? Why should any cable have a sound? By god it's the end of the year, haven't' you followed any of my instructions and guidance. Cables should not, repeat, not change, effect or affect the sound. They are connectors, nothing more. Buy something a few bucks more expensive then the cheapest, just so they won't break as easily and spend you money anyplace else but on cables... Why should a cable have sound? Because they are designed (engineered) to have certain characteristics, sorry if that is offensive to your sensibilities. It's just another tool in the toolbox. Cables are like phono cartridges, they all have their own signature. Now if you tell me phono cartridges should not "affect the sound" and they all sound the same, then I've wasted a lot of money over the years (plus the cost of cables). Keep rockin' old school Thebes, it's kinda endearing....lol.
  17. Hospital grade? Does your system have the flu?
  18. Maybe, no, or heck no depending on the setup. If you are new to this it's best to consult a turntable specialist and they can get you all sorted out. For a first table I would recommend an audiophile brand all in one unit (table, arm and cart.) in the 500 dollar range.
  19. Kimber PBJ and Tonik are nice sounding cables.
  20. "...I think due to the DJ reputation its been looked down upon by the audiophile community...." It was a audio turntable before there were DJ tables. It's just an average table with a fair tonearm, that's why it's not rated higher by audio guys.
  21. You'll have to buy some and find out. The EL34s I like are not being made anymore so I'll be looking around.
  22. If your speakers are shrill, it's not the speakers, just saying. What are you driving them with?
  23. I can't believe I'm not in this thread. My factory custom rosewood H3s. Serial number one and two.
