  1. Cabinets are near perfect with no discolorations or stains or scratches through the lacquer. Wood in some spots seems very dry as if the lacquer has itself dried up, but it is not noticeable enough that i want to give those spots any special treatment... so... I don't want to change the color, as you said "just simply restoring the gloss". I don't really feel like a big project, just something , other than Lemon Pledge (ha ha), to get these looking better. I could live with these for the next 25 years without doing anything, bu since the wife let me put them downstairs, I want to take it up a notch to keep them there. Thanks. jay
  2. I have an awesome pair of Belles that I want to look as good as they sound. I have read a great thread on here about different oils, including Watco, but my question is what to do with my speakers. I am assuming the -wl means Walnut Lacquer. So, what is the best way to get that gloss back? Is it ok to try the Rejuvinating oil or is that for -WO type finishes only? I know there are probably differnet views, and the other thread was a bit long an off my point so I started this one. Suggestions will be appreciated. You only get 1 chance to do this for the first time in 20+ years every 20+ years so I want to get all my options. Thanks in advance.
  3. What is really meant by "tweeter protection" that was added to the AA ? Or more concisely, why would I want or need it?
  4. To think I found a place where someone knew Bauhaus was an art movement and a band. Now that surprising. Thanks for all the suggestions. I have a few questions for you Bob which I will send you later. I will report back my observations when I make some progress.
  5. I think at the end of the day I would never be sure i "got it right" if you sent those parts and I would hate for them to go to waste but I'm not that confident when it comes to these type of mods on such sensitive speakers. I do have to take some time and consider the A vs AA, then I may just ante up. Thanks for your offer. Jay
  6. Erik... thanks for the offer. I do think it would be great if I could hear the a's before I commit, just so I could compare them to the '79 aa's in there now. Keep me posted as your project progresses and I might take you up on the offer, but I don't want you putting this ahead of anything you need for yourself. Your offer is very generous and much appreciated, but I don't want any pressure on you so just keep me posted.
  7. Honestly, I posted here and got the debate I wanted to hear. If I had spent 400 bucks for the speakers i might consider the 20 cap job, but at this point i am looking to spend a few more bucks and just sit back and enjoy.
  8. First of all I cam here so I would get TOO much information. My main preference is to get the crossovers back to factory spec without overkill. I know how to solder but I don't want to spend too much time wondering if I did everything I could to make these Belles sing. That means I would have to replace or test all components and then test the crossover when done.... not worth it when I can get something with the same specs as original. At least that's the way I am leaning. Dean, do you ever make them with the larger more modern spade connections on the speaker wire side? I have some good cables hooking this up to my Cayin 50-T, but they terminate in plugs which can easily be adapted to the larger 5/16"(or 7mm) spade size, but the the babys on the original AA's are like 3/16" and are hard to work with unless I buy new cables.
  9. Yeah, I think I want to keep AA spec, but I think I need more than caps. Any links for new AA specs would be helpful. I have seen bobcrites, but would like to know if there is a choice or price difference. http://myworld.ebay.com/bobcrites/' class="findresulttitle">
  10. I just bought 1979 Belles with original AA crossovers. I realize I need to rebuild or replace these. I have decided against going with anything other than the original specs but i have 3 choices: 1) Replace the caps on the AA's 2) Buy newly built AA spec 3) Buy newly built other Klipsch spec crossovers (AB) I am trying to understand the advantage of buying newly built (option 2) vs just replacing the caps. If I go newly built, should I consider one of the later crossovers that were used with the Belle since the speaker design didn't change or am I better sticking with the AA. Thanks in advance
  11. My biggest concern is the size of the spade
  12. Looking to use cables terminated in banana plugs to the back of my Belles. I know the spade size is small but don't know the actual size. Will this work: Spade width: 7mm (for 7mm terminal) from this page http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-Banana-to-Spade-Adaptor-Plug-Connector-Hi-Fi-MTP04_W0QQitemZ230166972808QQihZ013QQcategoryZ116854QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
  13. Yeah, I just got my 1979 Belles on Thursday. $1600 with the cabinets in great condition except for a peel/crack in the veneer on the rear corner (which will cost less than 100 to fix professionally) which just happened after the original owner passed on and the speakers were moved. I found them 110 miles away (im in jersey) and after trying to get a pair in Alaska and Maine, I jumped on these. Getting them in the house was risky the way i did it, but sadly i have no able bodied friends in these parts. Anyway, i have set these up , and since i got walnut cabs in such good condition instead of la scalas, the wife let me put them downstairs and we are all enjoying the great sound from them. My two cents is to jump on the pair that you can see and are close by. you will have trouble finding anything this big in perfect shape unless it s an estate sale imo because most people damage them at some point if the speakers are close to 30 years old. If you find that rare pair DO AS WPINES SAID and pay someone to move them unless you get help. I would have been heartbroken if I had damaged them, but i did not and I hope to listen to these for many years to come.
  14. Oldwiz... I am a Northern NJ lurker as well.... you have been running circles around me. My trip to ac kept me from those cornwalls. Let me know when you are ready to lighten up.
  15. You still have these? It took me forever to get my password so I know it's been awhile.
