Moros,
Welcome to the forum.
With that layout, I would just go 5.1 and get the RS-62 II's. Though I have never demoed the the RF-82 II's or the RC-64 II, I don't think they will be timbre matched. The 82 II's have a 1 inch tweeter and the 64 II has a 1.75 inch tweeter. With $6000.00 at your disposal, I would shoot for an RF-83/RC-64 combo on the used market or leftover new stock from a liquidator. JMO.

this marantz has a soft musical sound . a very good hi frequency . i mean the highs donot sound as harsh but it has that velvety engaging sound that makes music all the more beautiful.
Perfect way to describe the vintage Marantz/Klipsch sound. As mentioned before, if you want your 2230 to have a little more headroom, find an equally velvety sounding amp to give it a boost.

Got the RF63's home and hooked up, did a fast demo of them on my Pioneer Elite DV-59 AVI and a Pioneer 1120k receiver and they sound great. I have yet to do a auto cal using the mic with the 1120k and will do that tonite now that i don't plan on changing speakers for a while, i hope.
I have owned my RF-63's for over 2 years and have no desire to replace them. I have not replaced them but have only added: RC-64, RS-35's, Heresy's, Forte's, Quartet's, RB-5's. Am I addicted?[:$] Good thing is that all the speakers I have obtained since I got my RF-63's cost me less than the RF-63's retailed for(I paid $1000.00 for them used).[Y][]
Don't forget to post pictures of your new babies.

Do it, do it, do it. Negotiate it down to +400.00 but still do it. While the RF-82's are one heck of a pair of speakers, the refinement of the RF-63's are worth the extra $$$. Real wood veneer is worth at least $300.00 and the upgraded internals are worth even more. IMO.

There are integrated tube amps...
Good point.

If you want a warranty and from a reputable authorized seller.

Not an expert here but somewhat informed.
I have heard the Onkyo A-9555 described as "tube-like" by many that have owned them and in a Stereophile review. Here is one for sale on A-gon.

I think some of the NAD integrateds might be described that way also.

So my question is, if paying double for something slightly better isn't sitting well with me, if I go for the cheaper option, will I be dissapointed with the C2 ?
Deals like the one on Vanns.com don't last forever. You have to have a quick trigger when they come up.
To answer your question, the C2 is no slouch and for $150.00 you can't go wrong. While the C3 is better(larger cabinet, drivers), I doubt it is twice as good. If the C2 fits your budget better, get it. JMO.

ill now be trying out my american amp VAV , rated 100 watts as an outboard amp to the marantz , but hey ,its own sound is very spiky ! bad hormonics ....but ill use it to power my marantz now ........
I failed to mention that the amp/amps that I hooked up to my Marantz were of the warmish/neutral nature in order not to take away from the sweet sound coming from the 2252B. I used a vintage 80's Denon POA-1500 and then a pair of Marantz MA-700(200w) monoblocks. Either amp just enhanced that signature sound from the 2252B. A brighter sounding amp might detract from that.

Yeah I hope Im done for a while in upgrading..Well...
My rb-5 are original bought new..I might need an upgrade for my fronts..lol
RB-5's are great as the mains in a HT system. With the right subwoofer, I would put the RB-5's up against any bookshelf speakers in their price range and in many cases much more $$$. As a matter of fact, there are many towers(including Klipsch) out there that would be shamed to go up against the RB-5's for HT or music. You may have figured out by now that I love the RB-5's. LOL.

i find much added distortion in the tonality ( in both bass or the treble, whatever is tweaked ),
Are we talking at higher volumes also? If so, it sounds like your Marantz is running out of steam. While the vintage 70's Marantz receivers are very musical, most are not really high current. The RF-3's might just be taxing the amps inside. If you have an external amp laying around, hook it up to preouts and try the tone adjustments again. If no distortion, the Marantz' amps are the culprit.
I tried "once" hooking my Marantz 2252B up to my RF-63's and at low to mid volumes it sounded really great. Once I added some real volume, the 63's really revealed the 2252B's limitations. Those 2.8ohm dips were too much for the Marantz. I added a 150w/ch amp and we were good to go. Sweet warm sound with plenty of detail and headroom.
You might also try cleaning the pots in the bass, midrange, and treble knobs.

DisturbedJato(Dave),
Welcome to the forum.
Great choice in the RF-63's and a nice price too. I can't speak for your choice of amp but what I do know is that B&K, NAD, Marantz, and a 90's Denon integrated all sound great with my 63's.
What is your location and your $$$ range? With that info, us forum freaks can better assist you in your quest.

Today I ran across these three pieces; (1) AudioSource AMP One, (1) AudioSource AMP Two, and (1) Adcom GDA-700 DAC. Excellent condition, with boxes and manual. Everything works! This will be my first experience playing around with a standalone DAC (comments/suggestions are welcome).
My total for all three... $20.
Davidness,
Great find. If you don't like them you could sell them and probably make back 10 times your investment.
Isn't this fun?

but there's an Academy (with cosmetic damage) up on ebay right now for $180 (+ $47 shipping). is that a good enough deal to be worth the non-refundable risk of not being able to listen to it beforehand or inspect it personally
Yes. The Academy for sale on Ebay is a forum member's. I have seen and heard this speaker. Great buy at $180.00 plus shipping.

Thanks for the link-I will have to see if I can track down the sizes on each speaker to see if it would work
No need, here they are.

Does anyone have first hand experience with either of these systems or suggestions for one over the other?
No personal experience with either setup and I am also not trying to confuse you anymore, but here is an awesome setup(in silver though) that will probably smoke the doors off of the Energy or the Mirage(IMO).
http://austin.craigslist.org/ele/1940890658.html (no affiliation with this ad)
You could keep all or sell the pieces not used. I have this setup(except RW-10d) in my bedroom now but was my main system in my family room before the RF-63's. Great detail and surprising dynamics for a smallish setup. The RSX-5's and one RVX-42 plus sub would be a great suggestion for 3.1. Any of the combinations will work great.

Venaka,
The Audyssey MultEQ auto setup is pretty accurate but it is not perfect. I would boost your center up to about 70hz and your fronts to 60hz. You would not want your crossovers to be set below the lower frequency response of your speakers. JMO.

But I can't yet seem to get output to zone 2 (to drive the second and third pair of Chorus II's via my Integra 504's.)
Noah,
There must be a setting that tells the Yamaha that you are using only it's preamp section for zone2 instead of the internal amps.
Bill
-
Absolutely. Brand new, rock solid amp section, Yamaha's great channel seperation, most of the current bells and whistles, and an iPod dock all for less than $600.00. You can't go wrong with that. Do it.

how do the KG2's fare? I have a Theater in the box set for movies and such that does a pretty decent job but I really want something to listen to music with. Here are teh KG2's, similar price.
I think the KG2's sound great. With the passive on the back the bass response is really pronounced for a bookshelf speaker. Even though the KG2's are a "baby KG4", they slam just about as well. Offer the seller $125.00 and see if he bites.

Needless to say I was a little upset at the fact that the man didn't keep his word but its still understanding that he wants to get rid of them. Either way he said that he wasn't sure if I was gonna come back so he parted with him. I guess its a lesson learned to put some money down next time on such a steal.
A man's word is a man's word. He anticipated you not keeping your word. What can you do?
This might be worth investigating. More $$$ but a great deal if in good condition.

UWZX,
Welcome to the forum.
My suggestion would be to experiment with your crossovers going from 40hz to 80hz and sit and take a listen. You might be surprised that the higher setting will probably sound better and it will seem like your receiver has more power. Raising the crossover will allow the sub to handle the low freq. and take some strain off of your receiver's amps therefore more power to your towers and center. JMO.

sadly the man who promised to hold them for me didnt hold them for me
Are you talking about the KG4's or the Marantz MA-700's? Any luck with the Marantz 2285B?
