  1. Maybe this is the wrong place to put this, but it seems to get a lot of traffic.

I'm not totally sure how this happened but the preamp plug that runs from the satellite to the sub broke.

As you can see, that cylinder should be connected to the cord so that I can plug it into the preamp imput. I have a bad feeling I can't do anything about this. But I thought I'd ask.

  2. For some reason I can't view the sound card board...

I won't be able to ship my KG 3.5's to Alaska (where I'm moving)
until January, so I bought a Promedia 2.1 set and I'm going to just use
my laptop for all my music until I can ship out my whole system.

    My
laptop is about 3 weeks old, and it has a "SoundMAX Integrated Digital
HD Audio" card, or so my hardware information says. I don't know much
about sound when it comes to computers and their capabilities, but I've
heard only good things about Promedia. Will a good pair of speaks make
up for an integrated sound card? What are the benefits of upgrading?
    What are my upgrade options?

    Thanks alot for your responses,

    Matt

  3. I'm going to have to ship my KG 3.5s to Alaska. How should I package them? I don't even know where to start. Detailed instructions would be nice, because the thought of this is making me nervous. ha ha.

    Thanks for the advice.

  4. I've DJ'ed quite a few weddings, grad parties, anniversary parties, etc in my day. They've always been for close friends/family. I've always considered it my present to whoever I'm Dj'ing for and haven't ever charged a dime for my services. I don't ever have anything too outlandish but I always was complimented on how good my music sounded and the selection I played. I used to use my Bose 401s and Definitive Technology satellite/sub setup.

November 10th will be the first time I've DJ'ed in quite a while and also the first time with my Klipsch speakers. I can't wait to hear how they sound in a nice size room rather than in my confined basement. The friends who are getting married said as long as I play country and 80s rock I'd be golden. Good thing, since that's what 80% of my music consists of!

I already have the songs picked out and ready to spin. I used the Apple Lossless format when I ripped tracks from my CDs onto my hard drive. Its a good thing I just bought a 320 gig external hard drive - most songs take up 40-60 megabytes each in Lossless!

Anyway, it should be a great time. 4 1/2 hours of rockin' tunes!

    YOU .....

    effin' bastid ...

i Did ... try to get that dam bug on my screen ....[8-)]

ha ha glad I'm not the only one.

  5. You'll be wanting to seek the advice of Forrest WooDog, founder of the 'Woodog school of listening' wherein one sits entirely motionless with eyes softly shut, rising from the chair occasionally to adjust a Cornwall 2-4mm at a time until perfect soundstage is realized.

That sounds tedious, but interesting. I'll probably try that, or a variation thereof. I appreciate all the responses. It was also nice running into a couple people from the homeland of cheese and magic hat.

  6. Hello fellow Vermonter I am in the Burlington area if I can ever help you with anything.

Good to know! I'm fairly sure I'll be contacting you before I leave for Alaska in August. Out of curiosity, for what price (if any) would you part ways with your heresy's.

  7. Being fairly new to this I don't know an effective way to put this into words...

I notice a more full sound, I guess is the best I can come up with. It wasn't exactly "bad" toed in it just sounded...narrow(?)

  8. I could say with full confidence that my room is less than ideal. Considering it's a basement sectioned off by the stairs by some drapeage. There are no usable corners. I'd have an easier time if the heater wasn't wrapping the only usable pair of corners. I guess I'm not looking to use the room as a vehicle for the sound because honestly, if I move a table, I have one free corner. The matching corner goes into the laundry room. Come summer time everything will be back to good. I guess I'm just surviving right now.

I'm just curious if anyone else experienced similar circumstances. What would be the benefits of toeing in vs. not and vice versa given proper room dimensions etc.

  9. disclaimer: I looked for a relevant thread to post this in...I may not have looked hard enough.

So I had been toeing-in my kg 3.5s for quite awhile. I didn't really have any legitimate reason for it, it just felt like the right thing to do for some reason. Today I "un-toed" them. Vast (positive) difference.

    Thoughts?

  10. The sound becomes slightly distorted and I it seems to fade slightly for a split second when I return the balance to 50/50. After a second short while it goes away and seems to be fine. However, I realized that I was doing the testing with my turntable. And it may have been the vinyl that was dusty or flawed and I was just paranoid and began to assume that something had to be wrong with it after it fell over. I was not able to reproduce the problem with my cd player. Re-Cutting the wires seems to have done the trick. But here's my question...would a bad speaker wire connection have caused it to go into protect? Is it possible that while I was taking it apart I knocked some part or connection back into place temporarily? I wouldn't be able to tell by switching the tweeters now because the sound seems to be fine. I'm overwhelmed with the knowledge of the participants in this forum, I hope to learn a lot by frequenting the various threads. Thanks for all your insightful responses.

  11. When I called Klipsch tech support, he told me to play music through the woofer only and then through the tweeter only to see if I could make it go into protect mode to isolate the problem. Both were still connected to the terminal cup when I played them individually, it's just that one or the other was unhooked. However, I recut the speaker cable and all seems well, I still notice that the highs seem a little shaky. Thank you for the responses.

    -Matt.

  12. Thank you for the reply, Whamo. I took out the terminal cup which entailed unhooking the speaker wire when I had everything out of the cabinet I experimented with the tweeter and woofer again. This time the woofer functioned normally and the tweeter did as well the tweeter definitely sounded better than before however the highs were still a little shaky. After returning everything to the cabinet the speakers sounded good again, not great but good. When this problem originally started if I positioned the speaker a little leaning forward it sounded normal again, but eventually no position would work and it would continuously go onto protect. I feel that it could have been a problem with the connection somewhere, but that was fixed when I took the components apart and reassembled them but I am almost certain that there is something wrong with the tweeter. i noticed certain shakiness when the balance was at 50/50 but only for a brief moment. I'm sorry for sounding like a novice, your help is greatly appreciated.

I have a Yamaha RX-595 receiver, a Yamaha CDC-655 cd player and a Realistic LAB-430 turnable. I put this "system" together from scratch on limited funds.
