  1. I think that he used, at least according to legend, a tube normally associated with SET but in a push-pull configuration to get 12-15 watts instead of 3.
  2. With a moniker like that, one would hope so.
  3. Why don't we up the ante and start talking about why SET is superior to solid state with Klipsch speakers? hehehehehe
  4. Here is a post on it. http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tubes/messages/9160.html I have read in a couple of places he used a push-pull 2a3 amp to voice the corner horns but can't be sure if that is actually true.
  5. I can't tell you that definitively. I have never spent any serious time with the 6550. Only really know the EL34 family which I liked but I have to admit that I am moving a completely different direction and heading toward single ended. I would say that that would be a good post to search for in the archives at http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tubes/bbs.html where there should be a wealth of information on what you are looking for. Of course the only way to know.... But from what I heard of the JJ KT-77, it was one of the most eloquent tubes I have ever heard.
  6. I just paid $550 for mine. They are chipped up a little but overall very pretty and appear to be in good condition overall.
  7. I get my Chorus II on Wednesday, can't wait. Like you I wish I had the room for some La Scalas or Cornwalls (or Klipschorns!). But I don't so there it is. I think I recognize the Ikea. I have one just like it. Nothing out there beats that set-up for record storage and that price.
  8. http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tubes/bbs.html Kt-77's have been discussed a lot. If you are buying the new production JJ make sure you buy them from a reputable dealer who will tell you straight up that his stock is new and doesn't have the small pin problem that plagued these tubes when they first came off the line. You also want to make sure they have some sort of burn-in policy as they have had some reliability issues. Jim McShane, a reputable tube dealer, won't carry them for that reason. But people who have heard them by and large have come back and said they are the best output tubes they ever have had in their system.
  9. Not sure how I would even go about that or what values I would use.
  10. No negative feedback. But I will put it on the 4 ohm tap and see how it goes.
  11. I was thinking if I hadn't bought the Chorus I would go get them but the truth of the matter is I didn't buy the Cornwalls less because of money but more because they just won't fit. So I couldn't get them even if I had the cash. Too bad! Hope someone gets them.
  12. Goodness. "some refinishing" doesn't quite express it. What were they thinking?
  13. Sorry for all of the questions (I am new to Klipsch, I know). But I am going to be building my amplifier in the next few days and I need to know if I should build it using the 8 ohm or 4 ohm tap. It saves hassles later. I did a search and there was some response to the effect that one probably should use the 4 ohm tap. Just wanted to see if anyone else concurred.
  14. Don't know their conditions so it may or may not be a good deal (seems like these speakers go for more). I just shot my budget so no way I am getting them.
  15. I think my Bottlehead 300B amps will do a good job. I will upgrade the capacitors with some Polypropylene. How good depends on how long I wait (though the 68uf is going to be a Solen, no doubt about that). I would have thought dampening the cabinets with stuffing would screw up the passive radiators? Wrong?
  16. "Don't think he is in the group that will add lots of electronics in the signal chain." - Exactly. I am actually waiting for my 300B amps to show so I can build them. This has actually been quite the audio summer.
  17. Thanks. I am going to listen to them for a few weeks, maybe months like everyone says. I think I will build an external crossover eventually so I can easily swap parts in and out. I don't know anything about active crossovers so I might do some research on that. I did already get the schematic from the forum, it will be about $130 to recap. I will let you know what I do!
  18. I upgraded mine to a new board and kept the 7199 stock circuit which I personally like. I found that increaseing the capacitance of coupling caps lowered the bass response.
  19. I am sorry I don't know! I don't have them here yet. Should be here Monday or Tuesday.
  20. I plan on living with them for a while, as suggested, before I do anything. But I have another major audio project in the works right now and have to decide how much money to spend on it. If doing the crossovers is something I should be thinking about doing a month out then I will spend less. If it something that will make a major difference. If you think I will be fine for 6 months to a year than I can inject more into the current project and worry about that later. Just trying to spread my audio cash around in the most effecient way. I know it is something I will do eventually, It is not a matter of whether as much as when.
  21. All sorts of alternative music in my college years. I still enjoy that music now. I remember Toto from the 80's. We were listening to Warrant, Cinderella, Poison, all that cheese, glam metal that I don't listen to anymore. Along with you typical top 40 Duran Duran, Cindy Lauper stuff that I don't listen to anymore either. Grew up in a smallish town in the middle of nowhere, not much in the way of culture. It brings a smile to face when I hear it in odd places, but I wouldn't have it in my CD collection other than a greatest hits just for kicks and giggles. I do have to admit that even the alternative music from my college years is starting to show its age. Either that or I am.
  22. I am actually not much of a tweaker to be honest. I much prefer taking a consensus opinion on what component brand is good in a specific app, sticking it in, and not worrying about it. I have always bought Auricap because it seemed good and the litany of other capacitors was just too large and confusing. It really does get to be too much unless you are so dedicated to circuit building that everything else takes a back seat (at least to me).
  23. Marvelous, thank you! I wonder what the voltage on the capacitors is.
  24. If you thought tube rolling was bad... Choosing the right capacitors is actually a royal pain unless you are willing to solder, unsolder, resolder, over and over again. Glad you got some you like on the first try. Those Mundorfs are garnishing quite the reputation these days on various forums, almost as much buzz as V-caps, but who actually buys those eh?
