  1. Thanks for the feedback guys.

mdeneen: I love the VT-50. I have not found anything I don't like about it. In fact, this is the best overall sounding amp I have had in my system. As most of us do, I was just wondering what out there would be even better. At 45 wpc, there is no shortage of power. Since this is the only tube amp I have tried, I want to get other people's opinions on other amps (and even how this amp would compare to other ones). The SET's have been getting great compliments. The VK-60 has received great reviews, and one of the things that sounds appealing is the auto-biasing feature.

Hubert: I have never seen Futtermans, but I have heard of them. Maybe someday I will be able to audition them.

Randy: What kind of 300B amp do you own? I don't think the 2A3's would be "way" better, it just seems that everything I have read slightly favors the 2A3 over the 300B. Of course, there are some areas where the 300B is better, and of course this is all subjective. You have to have the right speakers to use the lower powered 2A3's.

I'm just trying to get more thoughts on amps from people who have direct experience with them. With SET's, the word "Magic" seems to be used quite often.

  2. Ok, I am writing to get everyone's thoughts and opinions on what the best amplifier would be for K-horns. I have heard quite a bit of praise for SET amps, but have never heard one. The 2A3 SET's seem to be favored over the 300B's. I currently own an Audio Research VT-50 tube amp and love it. Of course, if there is something that would sound even better with K-horns, then I would like to look into it. For the 2A3 amps, I hear that Cary makes a top-notch amp. Are there any others out there that could be even better? Another amp that I have considered is the BAT VK-60. I just want to hear what the rest of you think. Of course I will let my own ears decide, but thought I could get some good suggestions from the rest of you Klipschaholics.

  3. The Belles are going to sound very similar to the La Scalas. In fact, the Belles are meant to be a "more cosmetic" La Scala. The K-horns will be superior to the Belles and La Scalas in the bass area. However, in order to use K-horns, you have to have the proper corners. If you don't have the corners, then the Belles would be a better choice. If cost is an issue, the La Scalas are cheaper than the Belles.

  4. Stormin,

200 watts for a Chorus II is plenty of power. Remember that doubling power will only increase the volume by 3 Decibels. I seriuosly doubt that you would hear any improvements by adding another amp. If the buying bug has got you, I think you will be better off by applying that money to upgrading to a better amp.

  5. If you're interested in spending more money to improve your sound, instead of buying newer speakers (not necessarily "better" speakers), maybe you should consider investing that money in a better amplifier. That's where I would spend the money.

  6. "The Klipsch Room". Wow! That's what I've been calling my room that will be housing all of my equipment in my house that is currently under construction. It's not the game room, or the media room, or the home theater room, nor is it named after any of the other components I own. It's "The Klipsch Room".

  7. Indy,

Don't forget about your room construction. I am in the process of building a house and have made some modifications to the standard construction methods based on some recommendations from a local (reputable) hi-fi salesman. He did this to his house and said it worked great so I thought I'd try the same thing.

Both of our rooms were on the second floor, and he shared my concern of not having a rigid floor. He had extra floor joists added to give a more rigid floor. To keep the walls rigid, he had double sheetrock installed on each wall. I followed both of these suggestions. The sheetrock was screwed into the studs, not just nailed in. In addition, since I will be using Klipschorns, I added reinforcements to the wall frame in each of the four corners. The corners were reinforced from the floor to the ceiling, and 4 feet out from each corner. I'm not sure how much of an audible difference all of these changes will make, but I figured this was going to be my one chance to make these changes and hopefully improve the sound.

  8. cleger,

Just to throw my suggestion in -- an amp will have a profound effect on the sound. I heard significant improvements on my Cornwalls when changing amps. If you are looking to keep the price down and are looking for SS, I would suggest that you consider buying a used Classe Seventy. You should be able to find one used for around $500 or so. Although I haven't tried it with a KLF speaker, it sounded great with my Cornwalls. This amp will sound better than an AV receiver. The bass wasn't as deep as some other amps, but the quality was definitely there -- nice and tight. That's my suggestion to consider.

  9. I agree with John about getting better amplification than Adcom. Not that Adcom is bad, but there are better options out there for your La Scalas. Also, I don't think you have too many speakers, but you may have too many speakers in that room. Remember that each speaker has movable diaphrams. When one speaker is playing, the sound pressure is going to vibrate the diaphrams of the speakers that are not playing, and thus they will make some (unwanted) sound. I haven't tried this out in practice, but in theory it sounds like the other speakers will affect the sound. Maybe you can test this theory. Just a thought.

  10. For the record, that should be NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY, not the university of new mexico.

Ross, next time you pass through Las Cruces, make sure you stop for a bite at El Comedor restaurant in Mesilla. Order something with green chile from Hatch. It will do for your tongue what Klipsch does for your ears. Mmmmm, my mouth is already watering...

  11. I know what you guys mean. I was in the market for a new house, specifically looking for one that would work with my Khorns. I couldn't find one that worked, so now I'm having it built. Out of all the new floor plans that are out there, I picked the one that worked best for my Khorns. Fortunately for me, I also really like the rest of the house. The most expensive piece of audio equipment I have purchased thus far has been the walls for my Khorns!

  12. mdowns,

Take a look at the "Recent Klipschorn Review" post I recently posted in the "Two Channel" section. They talk a little about minimum room dimensions there. 16' is not much different than 14', but it would be better. Even 16' is on the narrow side, but it could possibly work. There are others on this board, such as Steve P, that have a similar setup. Remember that with Khorns, you can't angle them to fit your seating location, so having them that close together could cause seating problems as Steve P stated.
