Going to use a threaded rod to raise/lower the mid horn, accessable while in the corner. Had to drill a hole in the top board (ouch!)

Tweeter doubles as a riser

I've been working on this project for a few months. I wanted some really big Tractrix horns for my Khorns, and decided that the midhorn should be adjustable since it's going to sit on top of the tweeter, and be big, as in tall. I ran into some paint problems while putting one together, but I got a few shots of the build and the finished product. Don't look too closely at the black edges and everything will look alright. First look-the hinged front.

K-horns and Corvettes! It doesn't get any better than that (in my World)!

Bob Latino has a ST-70 kit that would fit your budget and give you 35 watts per channel, more power than a SET amp. The Reference Series speakers require a bit of power to sound their best, so I'm not sure a SET amp would be a good choice for you. If you bought a kit, you would have an amp with all new parts, plus the satisfaction of building your own equipment. If you don't want to build your own, there are some great deals on ST-70's on A'gon.

Hi Matt, I just put in a new JJ rectifier tube and it seems to be working fine. I can always use a backup if you want to send one my way. You don't have any 12AX7 tubes laying around, do ya?

Greg, I sure miss reading about your latest projects also. I get a lot of my inspiration for my own projects from reading about yours. I hope you will post your latest creations on your website so we all can benefit from your research and knowledge. -kevin

I'm currently running a Weber copper cap SS rectifier, since I had the same blow out problem with my tube rectifier. I just bought a new JJ tube rectifier I'm going to try out this weekend to see if I hear any difference in my ST 120. I'll be using the Sovtek KT88's and the Mullard 4024's in the front. I'll report my findings in a few days.I just put in one of the new Sovtek 12AX7 LPS tubes in my preamp to try out. I'll use it this weekend and see how it sounds.

I'm not sure what you mean by "similar cost drivers", but I can tell you this: I have a pair of home made tractrix horns for driven by K-55's, and they sound great. I built a larger 2' tractrix horn and am using Selenium drivers that only cost $125.00 each. They sound excellent. Much more open than the 1" driver/horn combo. I believe the size of the horn plays a large role in the overall sound. I've never heard Greg's trachorns with the $500.00 drivers, so I can't say weather his sounds better than mine or vice versa. All I know is a big horn sounds better than a small horn. Just my 2 cents.

I think the cabinet looks great! It's not as dark as I thought it would be. I bet they would look awesome with light cane grills.

To all the knowledgeable tube Gurus on this Forum: Is there such a thing as a guide to how different tubes sound? I want to expierement with tube rolling on my preamp and amp, but I can't afford to go out and buy a few of each brand of tube to try out. I'm mostly concerned about the 12AT7's in my amp and the 12AX7's in my preamp and phono amp. Also, what about the difference between KT88 and 6550 output tubes? Thanks in advance! -kevin

Hi Mike, I haven't listened to them yet, hopefully Monday if they are dry by then. I'm getting excited to be almost finished with them!

It's about 3/32 thick, 3 ply like the bendable luan. It also comes in oak (that's what I used on my 210hz mid horns). You have to go to a "real" lumber yard to find the thin stuff. Lowes and Home Depot don't sell the specialty items like this.

I use door skin lauan. It bends as easy as bendable lauan for one fourth the price. Don't tell anyone my secret, OK?
