    Dave, I'm in the same boat possibly that you are in. Having just bought a pair of 79 Khorns that are raggety at best, I'm also looking to upgrade my crossovers. I have contacted the Gods (DeanG, BEC, ALK,) and am weighing my options. My problem is I don't have any experience listening to anything but original crossovers, and old ones at that. I hope you will shed some light to the inexperienced like me on what you decide to go with and why. I have my Khorns torn apart and am ready to make 60th anniversary clones out of them. I want to upgrade my crossovers before I put them back together. Sorry for rambling--dipping into my homemade wine again! -kevin

    Dear Fellow Forum Friends,

    I bought the first real piece of equipment for the stereo-a pair of K-Horns! Last month I sold my Cornwalls because they were too big to fit in the living room, so I replaced them with K-Horns. I call that Heritage logic! Anyways, I'm going to need help from you guys in finding threads dealing with modifying these bad boys. I don't have any corners in my living room, so I plan on "boxing" in the speakers. I know several of you have modified your K-horns with good results. I also need to re-do the oak veneer-these are in rough shape cosmetically, but they play well and are all original. I'm going to need to upgrade the crossovers, any advice on that would be greatly appreciated. I'm wanting to change the grills from black to Cane or some shade of brown. does anyone know where I can get that material? Thanks in advance for your help. I am really geeked about these speakers! The wife, not so much. Pics will be posted as soon as I take some. Kevin

    You got it! Red is a great guy. I knew that he used to work for GM but not his position.

    Red sold me my first set of Klipsch speakers back in the 80's. A used set of Cornwalls. Had them all this time until last month when I sold them to another Forum Brother. I remember Red when he actually was red(hair)! Speaking of Flint-does anyone know where Craig Johnson went after he Closed the Stereo Shop on Miller Rd? He had a Klipsch franchise for a while and I bought my current system from him.

    Thanks to all my fellow Forum Brothers for their input on American made Electronics. The discussions about economy, politics, and who knows what else, was very enlightening to say the least.

    I have made some observations:

    There is a lot of great stuff out ther made in the USA

    Some people like unions

    Some people don't like unions

    Some people are much smarter than I am

    Everyone has a opinion!

    I have a lot of research to do, but in the meantime, please continue to debate. Thanks-Kevin

    thought about moving the stove to the "garage". My sister, who is my insurance agent, said that I would not be able to get any coverage if I used a wood burner inside an outbuilding

    Could the problem be, you have gas fumes in the garage and then go to light the stove?

    Yes James, that would certainly be a big problem! But I know of several mechanics who heat with wood while working on cars and nobody has blown up yet. I think insurance companies are afraid of the intense heat a wood burner is capable of putting out.

    Ok, well I think you should only support American Companies that are located in the US, that produce products for US customers and have no foriegn born workers in thier factories and where the company is owned by people who were born in this country and have never travelled abroad or thought about other countries or that think about other countries other than this best mother f@#$@#%ing country. All the share owners of such a company must be US born at least 7th generation and never been in jail in a foriegn country or have had relations with foriegn born people all the while paying thier taxes and saluting the US flag. Anyone know of such a company?

    Geeeez, I guessed you didn't read my rant too well. I never dissed foreign people, as a matter of fact I was supporting them by opposing the way Foreign companies abuse their children. They are made to work in deplorable conditions for 12 to 16 hours a day with a pittance for pay. WalMart and other "discount" outlets support this by buying their merchandise, making it near impossible to break this exploitation.WE support it every time we try to save a dollar and shop at these places. I don't care if you drive a Toyota and shop at Walmart. I choose not to, but I'll still love ya if you do! Remember, this is a Klipsch Forum-an American Company.     OK Guy, here's the deal with American companies vs Foreign Companies building in America. Sure, Americans are making money doing the labor, but the profits are going overseas. Besides that, the non union companies don't have the same wages/benefits of an American/UAW company. Did you know that GM has spent 100 times more on charities in America than all the other Foreign Companies Combined. Ford, Chrysler, and GM have created the middle class in this country, and it is slowly fading away. When Americans can no longer afford to buy the cars made here, watch how fast the Foreign companies pull out without so much a see ya, kiss my a**! Yes, it is a global market, and the American owned companies are bring the profits back to America. There is so much more behind the story besides which nameplate you buy. Don't even get me started on the child labor violations in the foreign countries! Yes, UAW workers cost more than cheap foreign labor, but we are treated like humans (kinda). Anyone who has worked in both a non union shop and a union shop will tell you how different they can be. Yes, we need to be competitive, but not at the cost of reducing human workers to indentured slaves! This thread is supposed to be about audio equipment, and it seem we got a little off track.     Thanks for the info. I looked at some pics of the K-Horns that are for sale locally, and they look like they may be too beat up. I'm thinking maybe I should stick to reference series anyway because of real estate issues. I'm going to end up piecing this system together one piece at a time, and it will be my "last" stereo, so it wiil be made of good components. I have an attic full of old receivers that I have upgraded over the years. Time to quit the upgrade mode and buy top shelf.

    Buc... Toyota, Nissan, Honda, BMW and Volkswagon all have factories and build cars in the US by Americans too!

    The notion that all components come from solely once country for a complex piece of equipment has become an anachronism.


    For 2 Channel - fine.

    But 5 or 7 channels of tubes for home theater? Buy Crown. An American company that will not only afford quality sound, but also an economy of cost of operation and maintenance over an incredible lifecycle. Something tubes can only dream about.

    Thanks for all the info. I didn't realize that McIntosh sold out. Pity. I did have a chance to hear Crown/Klipsch combo when I helped a friend out in his DJ business in the 80's. He used industrial LaScalas and 250 watt Crowns. A little abient hiss if I remember correctly, but brutally powerful! Has anyone have experience with B&K components? It may be futile to go 100% American, but it's a fun challenge to see how close we can get. Kevin

    The Juicy Music Audio tube gear is great (preamps and power amps), but it is pricey if you can't find it used. A fairly new company with a long history behind the owner. NOSValves power amps, his VRDs rock great too. Made in Michigan. Again, pricey for the new and uninitiated.

    What kind of music do you listen to? How loud do you want it? CDs only, or is vinyl in the mix as well? Room size? All these can make a difference on what we would recommend. You into home theater? That would change the game plan a bit.

    Other used tube gear would be HH Scott, Fisher, Dynaco. Do you have a specific budget to work from?

    I did check out the JuicyMusic web site. Nice stuff. NOSValves is close to me but I haven't checked them out yet. I'm currently running a 5.1 HT system with all Klipsch speakers, but I'm leaning towards getting back to just stereo due to the small size of my listening room. I have a line on a used pair of K-Horns selling locally- my dream speaker! Sorry JUB guys, no room for those awesome babys! Thanks for all the input so far-Kevin

    Please help- I am wanting to put together an Audio system with components made in the USA. Being a proud UAW member (BUY AMERICAN-BUY UNION), I think it's time to walk the walk. I'm not trying to bash foreign companies, Lord knows I own plenty. My wife's new Chev. Equinox has an engine from China, transmission from Japan, and is assembled in Canada. You get the picture. I'm wanting to base it on Heritage speakers and maybe tubes(how original!). I will have to buy used equipment as my budget is limited. Contrary to popular belief, you will not get rich working for G.M.! I know you guys have the broadest knowledge base when it comes to the best equipment out there, so if you can point me in the direction of American made products, I'll greatly appreciate it.     I agree with Coytee on the David Gilmour Remember that night selection. David Bowie singing "Arnold Lange" is great! One DVD that suprised me is Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris-"Real Live Roadrunning". (BMG D220204). Knopfler makes Country Music listenable!

    Just a quick 2 cents worth- I bought a house last year with a small pole barn, more the size of the garage. The house came with a franklin stove, and when I went to insure the house, the Insurance Company sent me a set of dimensions that the wood burner had to be in order to meet their codes( 3 feet from the wall). I didn't meet the code, so I thought about moving the stove to the "garage". My sister, who is my insurance agent, said that I would not be able to get any coverage if I used a wood burner inside an outbuilding. Maybe just one insurance company's rules? Something to check on possibly?

    BTW-I converted the franklin stove to natural gas logs, and everyone is happy! --Kevin
