The grill is framed all the way around and attached using nails. It looks just like the framing for the La Scala with a top grill.How is the grill secured at the bottom?
OK, so it's not a separate, removable frame? Like the material was stretched over and stapled to the cabinet, then the trim pieces applied, OR the fabric was stapled to the 3/4" frame, and that assembly tacked to the front of the speaker?
The grill is not a removable separate piece like the grill on my Fortes. Hard to tell how it's attached but the grill frame is not thick so I would guess the fabric is attached to speaker cabinet and the frame over top of this.

It seems that the consensus is this is an after purchase modification, not Klipsch work. It doesn't really matter to me but I was curious as it was very well done. I only got them hooked up yesterday and really enjoyed listening to them last night. My K-horns are in a room under the kids bedrooms so I don't really get a chance to listen to them a lot at night so this is a nice change. It is interesting to hear both the similarities as well as the differences between the k-horns and La Scala. I have always thought the best thing about the k-horns were the midrange sound and clarity, and the La Scala are their equal. Where the La Scala don't quite measure up, other than bass, is the size of the sound and huge sound stage, but my K-horns have had some Bob Crites upgrades (new crossovers, tweeters, and woofers). All in all I am very pleased with the La Scalas, and yes they are quite handsome with their full grills. My wife has (very grudgingly) admitted that the room looks nicer with them than the black Fortes they are displacing.

Norh 2b preamp, and an Ideal Innovations Elite 80 amp. Gives my K-horns a good run for their money, and they sound great for movies. I have always heard how short on bass la scalas are supposed to be but they sound great on everything I have played so far! Not as big on the bottom end as the k-horns but still good.One of the best looking La Scalas I have ever seen...
What are you driving them with?

So are you saying that Klipsch did make a "grilled La Scala."

If someone other than Klipsch did it they did it well. The cloth is the same as my 1976 k-horns and everything lines up very well, a really professional looking job.

I just picked up a very nice pair of La Scalas locally and would like some information. They are different from any other La Scala I have ever seen in that they have a full grill on the front, it makes them look like a Cornwall, just a lot deeper. The fellow I got them from bought them from the original owner who said that was how they came when he purchased them new in Louisville, KY in 1977. If anyone has any info on these I would love to know about it. The grills really dress them up and I am sure there is no way my wife would let a regular pair of La Scalas in the living room, so this is a great score for me!

Any experience/opinions on Altec Lansing stuff? I might have the chance to buy a pair of 9846-8A studio monitors (pro version of the Barcelona). I have only heard a pair of VOTT once but not in ideal circumstances. They seem from what I have read elsewhere to be somewhat similar to Cornwalls, but of course on the Altec forums much, much better. They are a couple of hours from my house and would like some feedback before taking the trip.

Any suggestions on a good long cable? I measured the speaker cable today and it is more like 40 feet. Monoprice has a 50 foot one that is reasonably priced and I have been pleased with their stuff in the past.

I currently have a second pair of speakers (Forte II) hooker up in my family room. This requires about 30 feet of speaker cable to hook them up to my Yamaha CA-1010 in my studio where the main system is. I am planning on swapping out the Yamaha with a 20 watt tube amp. Would it be better to run the output signal from the studio and place the tube amp close to the speakers or to leaver things set up as they are now? The Fortes sound fine with the current set up but the Yamaha has a lot more power than the tube amp.

I have a CR-2020 and a CA-1010 that I have used with Klipschorns and Fortes, an excellent match for classic Klipsch stuff. The power specs on these units must be a bit on the conservative side because I can't turn the volume knob to 3 and stay in the same room. The CA-1010 has a cool feature that allows you to run it in class A only. I prefer the sound of tubes with the horns but have a AB switch if I want to use the Yamaha stuff for more robust bass.

I have a pair of black Forte II speakers I purchased new in 1988. After many moves and kids the finish on them is dull and chipped in spots. Anyone know what the black finish is? Looks more like a stain or lacquer to me rather than paint. I would like to bring them back of from the basement to serve home theater duty but they are not not up to living room condition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have shipped Ebay items several times to Europe without any problem. I use USPS as they are a lot cheaper than theUPS/Fedex. The Europeans love American stuff (at least American trombones, I am a trombone player) and pay top dollar. However the only time I had anything damaged was shipping to Finland. I would be reluctant to do business with former east european countries and cancelled a bid on a recent auction from Estonia though that is not based on much. I always make overseas buyers use Paypal so I know the money is in my account before shipping.

There is a guy in Canada who builds a nice little integrated amp. around NOS Philips-ECG (Sylvania) 6AV5GA tubes for $699.00. I bought one last year and am using it to run a second pair of speakers. When I first got it I hooked it up to my k-horns was very impressed. A little light on the bass but very clean and natural sounding, also very quiet. The amp can also be customized when ordering.

Here is a link to my experience with turning and older Dell into a music server. The sound is first rate and at this point my CD players are rarely used as they don't sound as good. The only inconvenience is having to boot up the computer which takes longer than loading a CD player. Buying a new expensive CD player in my opinion is investing in obsolete technology. Good luck!

I had a pair of EH EL-34s that would emit a high frequency pitch, esp. before being warmed up well (30 min. or so). They would also make a lot of noise after I shut down the amp, it sounded like they were trying to crack. I cured it by replacing them and discovereed that they didn't sound very good either. Try tube swapping and see if that helps.

I really liked my Adcom stuff including the 555 amp and preamp. When I finally scored my Klischorns I found it a bit bright and have moved on to to the wonder of tubes, seemed like good quality stuff and I never needed a fire extinguisher.

Just a question. Why would you want a fancy internal sound card to process the data when an external DAC can be used for the computer and other sources as well? It is also my understanding it is good to get the DAC away from the other computer componants as the are electricly noisy.

The output I first used was the default used by Media Monkey but with MM you can use the output plugins for Winamp. I am using a Winamp plugin called ASIO Output Plug-in .67. It was a bit of a pain to install into media Monkey but the Media Monkey Forum had some step by step in stuctions. Basicly you have to install it in the media Monkey outut plugins folder, though of course Windows made that more than a single step. There is also a "wave out" plugin that comes with MM that sounded pretty good as well.

The only small complaint I might have is the lack of remote control. I do have a wirless keyboard but that is really not the same. Any good ideas about how to add one?
