  1. You should look into getting glass tops made so your not sitting anything directly on the speakers.

Definitely...even if you think no one will ever put anything on them. I had someone set a can of compressed air they were using on one of my Quartets and it etched a ring in the veneer. :(

The body has been well hidden.

I wanted to add, it looks like another Cornwall would fit find in the middle. You can probably sell that Academy? for more than an odd one.

When I go flat panel I am probably going to do a 3 main setup with my EQ rack being on both sides of the center for symmetry.

Funny thing is I brought the Cornwalls down to experiment with the front timbre, I had seen some use a Academy for a center and others use others. I had used one of my Heresies for a center, I had a idea in my head that I knew that the Heresy was turned on its side. So I started to scout for a Academy when I seen that they were 300-400 each and not noticing much different in sound with the Heresy. I gave up, then I came across a deal so I snatched one up. I feel in love with the sound. I was going to sell some stuff when the wife convinced me to KEEP the Cornwalls downstairs, so I did. Then I brought up the idea of getting another Corn like you guys talked about.

I didn't even get threw the conversation when all I herd was no we don't need more speakers in the family room. So I figured this gives me a chance to find some Lascalas for my fronts and move the Corns back to my 2 channel system. So many options so much time. All I know is she told me if I worked on my grammar and spelling I could write a love novel.

Oh yea about the glass tops I was thinking this idea when my new to move in roommate moves in(he works for a glass company its all free) So soon they will be protected.

    wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I have 2 options, rca ins or balanced ins. Now I know I've read somewhere were its only necessary to us balance for over 10ft runs, if this is the case is it necessary to run balanced or could I just us a good rca interconnect I have 30ft of rg-59 cable with the tools for compressing the ends. If I go with balanced any recommendations on wire for that.

Now another question is do I need to use both inputs like I do with the rcas and if so, how do I go from the balanced plug to the rca so I can split down to the single line in on the receiver. Hope this makes since.

  3. Rockon I am glad you are feeling better, there must be something going around in the metro area. My kids have been sick all week. I am busy this weekend. But next weekend I could use some help setting this puppy up. Since I have just made this purchase along with some others I will have to wait on a different sub, I think this should fit the bill just fine if I can get it dialed in right. Thanks

  4. hey "jbpjr",

i notice in your pictures from a while back that you have the thx system with 4 of the kw-120 subs. i was wondering how you like it with the extra bass? i am thinking of doing the same and putting one in all 4 corners of the room. either that or stacking 2 on top and having dual bass towers. let me know if you see this, thanks.

I know nothing on this so don't take this as I know what I am talking about. But there is something in The white pages on the hamran/kardon website from DR. Toole , about placing a sub in each mid way point of the room to help with modes. I haven't looked into it yet buy might be worth looking into or maybe someone else understands and knows more. duder
  5. I do only have the reciever up to like 2 and the subs not even turned half way up, and its pounding. So I am sure I can turn reciever down and the sub up. Carl you know so much about this stuffed were did you learn about it. I will give it a try, if I move my sub to a different location other than the phase is there anything else I need to switch.

    thanks

  6. Should I turn the output level up on the sub or the receiver. Thanks for the help. Also it has all these switches, sub sonic filter switchable between 15-35hz , crossover switch for either out or in, any idea what these might be used for. I have turned the high pass to lowest which I think was 80hz, and the low pass the highest which I think was 120, and that seems to make a great difference.

These thing ways 105lbs, no wonder my back is sore. We were watching the newer Transformers and my daughter freaked out about the floor shaking.

  7. This weekend I stumbled upon a great deal on some Klipsch speakers, I guess you figured they were Klipsch that's why I am here. But to the point some that I might be keeping are the Fortes and Academy, which are both oak oiled. One of the Fortes has a few spots such as a water ring that looks like someone try to rub out which now looks like raw wood, and a burn mark. The kgs that a I also scored with them, don't have any damage just dull looking. And the Academy has a slight water ring that isn't noticeable.

I guess my question is what do I use to care for and shine up some oak oiled products, plus on the Fortes with the raw wood is there any helping these such finish sanding the top a to even it out, then re oiling them. Would like to get these prettied up in case I decide to sell or just to look nice were ever they go in my home. Also how do the grills come off on the Fortes and Academys, and the Fortes grills look like they need some serious cleaning I don't know if its just aging or that's how they are suppose to look but it looks as if they have a brownish hue.

    thanks

  8. what do you guys think of a Velodyne f-1800r2 for 100.00, well actually I was in a situation were I had to act I figured for 100.00 I couldn't go wrong. When I got home and actually read some reviews it sounds like for the prices paid 2,000 used and 5,100 new that people weren't impressed. Their main issue was a low volume hum which was taken care of by a 2/3 prong adapt kit.

So I lunged this monster home and plugged/hooked it up, with a adapt kit. And I don't notice any problems so I figure I spent a wise 100.00. Now the problem I have is this has more switches than my ksw-12 does. I do understand a little about hpf and lpf but this gives me different crossover points. Now I figure I can spend a lot of time switching back a forth to find the best sound. But if someone could chime in and give me some hints on speeding up the process on tuning this sucker that would be much appreciated. For reference I am now using Cornwalls for fronts(only cause the wife is making me) and a Academy for a center.

    Thanks

    Nick

P.S. I was answering a cl ad for some Fortes and other goodies when I noticed the sub in the corner of the basement. The guy still has a energy 18 something or another that he wants 250.00 for if anyone's interested. I have never herd of this brand nor had the extra 250.00 at the time to purchase that monster.

  9. Ohio, I too just scored some Fortes today, I also had Heresies for my mains. The only thing is I made the mistake of bringing my Cornwalls down for main duty a couple of weeks ago(which I was using for my 2 channel) and my wife ended up liking them. So looks like I need to find another use for the Fortes and some Lascalas for 2 channel. Nice looking setup.

  10. No I have not picked up a sub yet, I have been trying to save some dough for one. It looks like lots of Ideas for one under 1000.00 which is right up my alley. As of right now that one from elemental design is my top pick for 700.00 18" 500 watt kit. I will look into others especially if they might be on the bay. Thanks for the rest of the suggestions.

  11. Also what do you mean by pink noise.

Pink noise is a static-y sound that most newer receivers will output from one speaker at a time. Its main purpose is to balance the output of each speaker to each other but it will also let you hear differences in sound from speaker to speaker.

Mine does this when I am calibrating the system the built in mic in the remote picks it up and adjust accordingly. Funny the right is crank up more than the left I wonder if something is wrong there.

  12. I'm convinced, I think its the best thing to do. If your going to do it do it right I have plenty of length to work with so I shouldn't have any problems.

When I finally went with a LaScala between my 2 LaScalas it blew me away. I thought it sounded good with the KLF 20 and it did but not only is the timbre perfectly matched, I also don't think anything can hang with a LaScala for dialogue. I really couldn't believe it.

Today I watched Terminator Judgement Day and there's a scene where a helicopters slowly moves from left to right. Talk about a demonstration for a matching front 3. The sound was perfectly seamless as it moved. Find a way to do it man. You can talk yourself out of it all you want but when you do come around you're going to wonder why you didn't do it long ago.

And that's the perfect example of what to expect! (You lucky dog! You wouldn't happen to have another LaScala sitting around?) My Heresy center pulls it weight but I can't imagine what another timbre matched LaScala would do!

This makes sense, I was a bit confused since wikapedia just talk about separating certain pitches, which seems could be a issue dealing with music but the way you put it makes more sense. thanks for all the help on making a big decision. All this research I need to start buying and quite talking. Just one thing at a time.
  13. If you ever have a receiver and run its setup pink noise through each speaker at a time you will hear what timbre is.

Fortunately you do have Klipsch with horns in both places. Horns have a distinct sound, different than other speaker designs. Your setup probably does sound good, but with a more appropriate center speaker it will sound great.

So what you are saying is since horns have a distinct sound of their own, that we wouldn't hear much of a difference.

Also what do you mean by pink noise.

I did how ever put my Corns for fronts and one of my Heresies for a center. Other than being louder and more dynamic I don't see much difference going with a all Heritage setup. Also I don't see how one speaker in a system such as the tweeter make any difference.

The main reason I am looking into this more is for the fact of building a dedicated theater downstairs, with either K-horns or Lascalas, and I just want to have the right center. If I go with a Lascala for the center then that pushes my screen up 2 feet, which I guess I should probably do for mounting purposes. But if I could go with something like a rc-64 I could save a little room.
