  1. I am curious about not hanging the ceiling drywall first.  At least before the final wall layer.

In my room I used CASCO SF-181M Acoustical flex duct.  It really does work.  You can not hear the furnace/AC or any noise from other parts of the house through the ducts at all.

  2. The bolts need to be torqued and the locking nuts make an accurate torque almost impossible to achieve.  At the very least use a wrench with a cheater to get them very tight.  A impact wrench will never actually torque a nut anywhere near what the the makers claim.  I have tested many.  If it was me I would use my 1" impact gun and call it good even though I own a 650lb/ft torque wrench.  You can't know how much of the torque you are applying is to over come the locknut and how much is streching the bolt which is what is important.  I make my living wrenching on heavy equipment so take my advice for what it is worth.

  3. I had a Harmon Kardon Citation 21 pre amp for a while It is probably one of the best SS preamps HK ever built and worth looking into if you like HK, but it was not bright.  I can't imagine wanting to pair Klipsch up with anything "bright" but to each his own and you like what you like.  I would give the Rotel a chance you may find you like it once you get to know it better.  I have never heard an AVR or pre/pro that sounded as good to me playing music as even lower end dedicated 2 channel preamps.  They do sound different no matter what some may say, and you may just not be used to the sound the fully analog 2 channel pre puts out.

     Hi All,

I'm seeking a set of empty Cornwall Cabs 2.

Please let me know if anyone sees them for sale anywhere.

    Thanks,

    bob

that would be next to impossible as these never - never come up for sale -

I bought empty cornwall cabinets (oiled walnut) in OK to fair condition for $30.00.  The guy had them listed on the local free classifieds for a very long time.

  5. I use the Adcom GFP 750 preamp.  Has both passive and active stage.  Developed by the great Nelson Pass.  Very highly aclaimed pre amp.  Used prices are between $850-$1,000 depending on condition and whether or not owner still has a functioning remote.  See links below for more details.

    Best regards,

    John

This is what I use as well.  It sounds great in either mode and has a theater bypass mode as well.  The passive section is more than just an attenuator it corrects the output impedance issue.  A truly great pre that competes with units many times it's price.  No phono section is the only minus.

I have interest here if you have figured out what you want for them... please let me know... better pictures would also be nice. Are the grills removable?

i don't think you can call them grills, just full grill cloth. i think they just have cloth stretched across the front of the cab with screen moulding nailed on and not removable unless you pry off the moulding

My thoughts exactly.  Even worse they would be painted black under the cloth and there are so many staple holes that it would be impossible to ever refinish these if you wanted to see the horns as I would.

  7. I may be in the minority but I think the center can be inferior to the left and rights without being noticed too much.  I do put a much higher value on 2 channel music listening over movies but I do like good sound when watching a flick.  I have used a phantom center in the past with results that are very close to what I get with an actual center speaker.

  8.

If you are going to put Eliptrac 400s and ES crossovers in, consider the JBL 2404H tweeter.  Best mod I ever made to my Khorns.

I would have to modify the motherboard and that scares me

Grill frames are available from Fastlane.  Your Khorns will look stock.

  9. So to my original Question, why i don't see the 16 depth, and see only the 24 and the 32 in midi set up, is irrelevant, because itunes don't care and will play music 44/16 anyhow.

Second question, using the midi set-up and adjusting to 384/32 is also irrelevant, even if the dac show 384 bitrates, in fac it will be 44/16.

And midi set up or pure music, it is the same thing, except puremusic bypass itunes digital volume to play direct data to the dac.

My goal was to sent best data to dac and the dac do the job, for now, i can't tell what set play best, but only the one that produce listening fatigue, after 2 hours.

So far, no fatigue 44.1, 384, 88.2 in 24 depth.

    the rest well, still experimenting.

    Two software to test

    -Bitperfect

    -Pure music

Still if midi, don't do nothing about the original source, why dac read and show 384 when midi setup 384? Does the macmini is oversampling or doing the math to produce those data?

    regards

First question:  It does not matter.

Second question: It does matter what you set the frequency to in midi setup.  You have to set it with iTunes closed and then open iTunes each time you play a selection with a different rate.  You need to set it to the rate of the song you play or quality of the playback will be compromised.  Pure music and other programs solve this issue by doing it automatically with out having to relaunch and that is the best reason to use them IMO.

  10.

I would call pure music. I have found they are very good with technical questions. Do you have the upsampling option set in the music server set up window? Please don't think I know what I'm doing here. I did find that I could get though the set up with the help of pure music and I bet they could help you as well!

Well, it is because of them, i have started to questionning my set up. I have upload the trial version and read on there website and now i am questionning if i go with purchasing the software or not?

Since i want to use my macmini headless, i am not sure of the result, since my mac doesn't show 16 depth...

For now, still investigate and will contact them, thanks for pointing that out

Are you accessing the adjustments through the Mac program "midi audio setup" ?   If you haven't opened this, go to the launchpad and search for midi, it should pull it up and give a 16 bit option.

It depends on the DAC you have hooked up.  None of the three I use show a 16bit option in midi set up, but it does not matter the mac will output a bit perfect 16 bit signal when playing redbook anyway.   The original poster is worrying about a non issue.

  11. Yea, I didn't want to start a new thread on the subject of "how record companies have messed up the music business", so I reused this one to show a little closure.

I've recently found that there has been a reversal trend in music compression practices--in this case, 2012 SACDs released by Analogue Productions: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/year?artist=Norah+Jones

How are SACDs even analyzed for the database?  Are they converted to analog then back to digital or are they always ripped using PS3s.  Seems like the same questionable results that you see with vinyl may be at play with SACD.  Don't get me wrong, I love my hundreds of SACDs but caution and research (not just of the DR database) is always called for to avoid getting a compressed or poorly mastered one that may not be as good as the best redbook mastering of the same thing.  I know that Analog Productions does great mastering usually,  and my comment  is not directed at them.

  12. You certainly don't want to overpay for Adcom stuff. It's average sounding at best and doesn't command a high price.

    Shakey

The Neilson Pass designed stuff is wonderful and can be some of the best values in HIFI.  I have loved my GFP 750 preamp, but I admit most adcom was just better than average MidFi

  13.

I've had that Tool record since it was first released. I think I paid 20.00 for it. Maybe I should add it to my retirement portfolio.

Want to sell?  I would love to have a playable copy.

What did you have in mind?

    Condition?

  14. I found a trashed copy of that album for $10.00 at a used record store.  It is so scratched that it is unlistenable but I can tell that a pristine copy would truly kill the slightly compressed CD version.  A NM copy might be worth $150 to me if I was in the right mood.  It is one of my favorite records.

  15. If I could afford the good Krell amps, and some are much better than others, I would not have any Emotiva gear in my kit.  The Class A Krells will out punch almost any amp.  I would want them running full range.

  16. My favorite Pink floyd pressings are

Atom Heart Mother: MFSL gold disc

    Meddle: MFSL gold disc

    Obscured By Clouds: Sax

Dark Side: SACD or Sax Remaster.  To be fair I have not heard all of the early Japan masterings but they are pricey.

Wish You Were Here: Sony Mastersound gold disc or SACD.  I have heard the 2 track. Save your money!

    Animals: Sax by a mile

    Wall: Harvest

    Final Cut: No preference.

  17.

This is not the case with Pink Floyd CDs. The 90s remasters were done by Doug Sax and were not compressed. Some prefer the the earlier masterings but there is really nothing wrong with the remasters. One of the best places to research masterings for almost any artist is the Steve Hoffman music forums.

    Hummm, maybe NT...

    http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/dr/desc?artist=Pink+Floyd

    http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/year/desc?artist=Pink+Floyd

I'd recommend the checking the DR Database first, and select the exact version/manufacturer/year of manufacture that you prefer to have.  The DR Database is sortable on album name, year, DR(album), DR(min), and DR(max) - ascending or descending for each column by clicking on the column headings twice.  Details and version identification are in each detailed record view selected.

Looking at the database for Dark Side and other popular Pink Floyd CDs there is a difference of at most 1 between the earlier masterings and the Sax remasters.  This is could easily be the result of EQ moves.  I am a believer in the DR database but minor differences in the ratings do not tell the whole story.  It is well established that the Sax remasters did not use compression.  I have spent way more than I should have buying different masterings of Pink Floyd CDs, LPs, and SACDs.  The fact is that almost all of them sound great.  I hate to see the Sax remasters dismissed just because the are not the earliest masterings.  They are almost guaranteed to be the cheapest CDs you can find and while maybe not the holy grail masterings they sound very good to excellent.

  18. So who did the DSOM sacd? I'm open minded about comparing others but the sacd loses to my 1985 version

James Guthrie.  I think the DSD layers are OK but the rebook which is a completely different mastering is terrible. The surround mix is fun.
