  1. http://www.dpreview.com/ This was a great suggestion by a previous poster and I highly second it. DPC is a wealth of information - although sometimes prone to the Nikon/Canon debate. I have Nikon/Nikkor gear and am very happy with it. The main reason I went DSLR was the familiarity with looking through the lens as was customary on my film Nikons. My choice of Nikon was pretty much made as my stable of Nikkor lenses was easily useable on my new digital body. The D40 is too elementary for my needs, thus I would promote at least a used D70 or newer D70s. The D80's are fine as are the D200's, but that is likely overkill for your particular needs. Lenses are the most critical part of a D/SLR system thus my concentration would be on those and then match whatever body would give me the minimum requirements for those lenses. Thus my move more towards the D70/D70s range. Not sure what your overall budget is, just please consider that for the next 2-3 years, birthday's, anniversaries, and holiday gifts will likely include gear. (Bodies, lenses, tripods, speedlights, bags, etc.). A wonderful interest and DPC is a great place to hang out to learn. Attached is a site I prefer over the aforementioned K Rockwell site, that has delivered for me excellant advice on Nikon equipment. http://www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html Best of luck in your search/decision.
  2. I have not explained clearly. Originally I did not have a separate sub cable from the receiver to the sub. I ran speaker wire from the receiver to the sub and from the sub to the speakers. I thought My sub sounded good. Now I have a sub wire from the receiver to the sub. And speaker wires from the receiver to the mains. No speaker wire to the sub - only the single sub cable. This does not sound good. It has less volume, less bass, less vibration than when I had the sub as the interface between the receiver and the speakers. Could it be the sub cable? I simply split a red/white connector and used one lead to connect between the receiver and sub. First I used the white one, then used the red one thinking I needed positive instead of negative. But not much volume when using the cable (compared to before). Thus I was thinking of going and buying a specialized sub cable but based on the postings here, that is a crock. Thus why is my sub now less impressive now that it is supposedly wired(cabled) correctly than it was before when it was supposedly wired incorrectly?
  3. Following on this sub cable question - I had previously (last 8 years) not had a sub cable but ran my wires from the receiver output to the sub to the speakers. Just this past weekend I was notified that I should run a separate stand alone sub cable and direct wire my speakers. So I did. My sub sounds like sh!t. It sounded much better with the apparent wrong wiring. Please educate. [H]
  4. I just bought yesterday a Yahama RX-V663 ($499 @ Best Buy). The RX-V883 is I believe near your lower price point. Mine replaced an old worn out Technics so this is a tremendous upgrade for me. The reviews on Yahama receivers is mixed with those that like them - really liking them and willing to overlook some items for the clean sound and low distortion - the RX-V663 is .06% THD. Best of luck in your search.
  5. I have acquired an excellant KLF-C7 in as close to "new" condition as I could expect. I am now looking for a pair of KSP-S6's to replace the Monitor 70's.
  6. My wife and I both enjoy J Lohr wines, especially their Cabernet. We stumbeled accross them at a small shop in Key West and became hooked. I try to keep a dozen or so bottles in the cellar. My oldest to date is a '96. J Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet will run $12-20/bottle for the J. Lohr (Paso Robles) Estates and go up from there for their excellant black labeled (Curvee) series. For daily table fare we found a very ecomonical "house" wine called Copperridge. Again we gravitate towards the Cabernet. Copperidge is for businesses/resturants and its retail counterpart is Turning Leaf. $6-7/bottle. http://www.jlohr.com/
  7. Do most run the sub-woofer off the fronts or the surrounds? I currently have my sub mated to the front towers with the surrounds linked to just the tuner 5.1 outputs. It is easier (wiring wise and space/location wise) to mate the sub with the front mains. If I were to do that with my KLF's, I would have all Klipsch products (KLF-C7, KLF-20's, KSW-150) at the front facing the seating positions with the Polk Monitor 70 towers as the stand alone surrounds. Does that sound about right with my current speaker options? I'm sure I will see a huge difference over the Bose VCS 10 center and the 201's and even the Polk PSW 10 sub. Really pretty geeked. Thanks for the thoughts and original advice.
  8. I have just found and purchased a KLF-C7 in excellant condition. I plan to replace the Bose VCS center with the KLF-C7. I will replace the Polk PSW 10 sub with my Klipsch KSW-150 and replace the Bose 201's (surround) with the KLF-20's. I temporarily need to use the Polk Monitor 70's in the setup and currently plan to use them as mains. I will likely try it with the KLF-20's as mains with the Monitor 70's as surrounds and vis-versa. For now it is the best I can do. At least I am getting the Klipsch equipment into the mix and with the great C7 find I am pretty geeked.
  9. To any and all who assisted in helping me get in contact with the person on AudiogoN.com and the C7 for sale, please accept my heartfelt appreciation. It is expected to be everything I had hoped and very much wish to thank you for the assistence. Dan
  10. I am seriously looking for a KLF-C7 center channel speaker to mate with a pair of KLF-20's. If you did not get that speaker, would you mind letting me have the contact?
  11. Been a fan of the KLF-20's for over a dozen years. Sound clarity is more than I could ever have hoped for. I distinctly remember spending about 3 and a half hours in the listening room of the rather high end store switching between speakers over and over and over. It really finally came down to the KLF-20's vs the 30's and really, the 20's sounded better. They were just so efficient. Low volume truly rocks these speakers. Years later at another high end store, I mentioned my KLF-20's and the selection process. The tech there, confirmed the superiority of the 20's. For music ranging from Savage Grace's All Along the Watch Tower and those piercing song ending vocals, or the opening track bells on Lord of the Dance, or the New Age guitar of Govi, or the Smooth Jazz of 3rd Force or Craig Chacio, or the drums from Collin's In The Air Tonight (theme from Miami Vice), the KLF-20's really fill the air. Even country sounds good. As for the Forte ll's, no experience here. But from the postings, they read like they would be an excellant choice as well. After reviewing the specs, it seems that the KLF-20 have a 100 more watts (rated at 200/800 max) and have an additional 20 pounds in weight. Having owned the KLF-20's, I'd pick those again.
  12. I found the search function. Unfortunately it is pretty obvious. Upper right corner above the heading.
  13. Now THAT'S what I call an answer. I'm not sure I understand what you wrote, but I'm buying it. Basically, I will set it to zero (0) and unless something blows up, I'm good to go. [H]
  14. 1. I am not clear on how/where the search function is for this forum. Any help there would be appreciated. Hopefully it isn't too obvious. 2. On the rear of my KSW-150 subwoffer, there is a toggle labeled Phase with positions 0 and 180. a). what function does this switch have? . when do I use it? 3. There is an "auto" mode for on/off. Is there any detriment or risk to leaving the sub on auto continuously?
  15. Much appreciate the comments and links. Glad to know I'm a "legend head" [H] I really can't explain how nice I think those 20's sound. I started a thread (in the General discussion section) regarding songs that just JUMP when listened to through Klipsch speakers and All Along the WatchTower by Savage Grace has to one of my very favorites. The ebay links give me a sense of price ranges. Truly appreciate the help. There is also a pair of KLF-20's and a C7 in the Garage section. Sounds like that would "wake up" a HT system.
  16. After reading this link, I think it answers another question I was to post on speaker wire which was; does using different gauge wire in combination (as in the same run) matter? AND what effect does splicing have (either same gauge to same gauge or different gauge sizes? From the linked article, it doesn't seem to matter at all. Is that correct? In other words, splicing 16 gauge to 24 gauge would have no appreciable effect on sound quality?
  17. Pretty new around here and just wanted to share some songs that I feel really optimize my KLF-20's. These to me, sound particularly good coming out of these speakers. Bells from the initial track on Lord of the Dance Hard Drivin' Man - J. Giles; Full House - the harmonica rocks Riders on the Storm - The Doors; the piano notes are marvelous All Along the Watchtower - Savage Grace; especially the Harpsacord, drums and end of song vocals - brilliant Smoke rings in the dark - Gary Allen Any song of Vince Gill and the steel guitar Magellan's feast - Govi; plus many many more Govi songs Sountrack from the movie King Arthur Almost anything form Clannad Lets just say - I really enjoy Klipsh speakers.
  18. Thank you for the reply and ebay links. It reads like my best bets would be to either keep the Klipsh KLF-20's with the stand alone stereo (which I do enjoy very much) and the present surround setup, or upgrade the entire "theater" system to accomodate the higher efficiency of the KLF's. Appreciate your thoughts.
  19. First time poster. Stumbled on the site a couple of days ago. I have 3 separate systems with the following setups. The computer uses Klipsh ProMedia 2.1 THX. The stand alone Stereo uses a pair of KLF-20's and a KSW-150 subwoofer (stereo system includes tuner/tape/CD and turntable). The Home Theater (5.1) uses a mix of Bose and PolkAudio components namely a Bose VCS center, Bose 201's as rear/surround, PolkAudio Monitor 70's as front towers and a Polk PSW10 subwoofer. I am completely happy with the computer setup and I have long admired the sound from the Stereo. The home theater is adequate, however I am wondering if including the KLF-20's and KSW-150 into the theater system would make a significant impact (perhaps the KLF-20's as front towers with the Monitor 70's serving as rears). I have literally zero understanding of "matching" speakers and the language so associated, so any advice should be explained with that in mind. Thanks.
