I believe the reason those particular Radio Shack tweeters blew so quickly was the lack of a xover. Tweeters don't like much low frequency power! I notice that this particular tweeter only goes to 5khz. I thought the the network in the LS IIs (AL-4???) followed the trend of the AK-4s in the new Klipschorns with a steep slope xover to the tweeter at 4.5 Khz. Either way... I find myself wanting to upgrade the tweeters in my LaScalas and Cornwalls.

I personally am very interested in a review of the UMC-1 especially from a fellow Klipsch fanatic. The features seem to be very promising. I just wonder how it would match with my Yamaha M-60s [:^)]

I would have to agree with some of the statements made. I listen to a variety of music including a variety of metal (In Flames, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, All the Remains, etc...... the list keeps going and going). I really enjoy the music and it is the primary genre I play on electric guitar. BUT, listening to that music on my LaScalas and Cornwalls is not a great experience. It can almost be painful at times. I attribute most of this to bad recording quality and the "loudness wars." A couple of really well recorded albums sound pretty good on my system and are very enjoyable. Unforuntely with metal... that is very very few albums.

I believe the issues with the RF-7 and the RF-5 is the lower impedance at low frequencies. The amplifier won't be able to provide enough current to push the bottom end of those speakers. I think DJK's observations are right on. The heresy seems to be a valid option. I think the RF-7 would be a bad choice considering the impedance gets around 2 or 3 ohms on the bottom end of the woofers (if I remember correctly... feel free to correct me if I do not!).

Honestly, I found his review very difficult to read. He wrote the review like he was writing a novel. He compares the sound and behavior of the speakers to things completely unrelated to sound. That isn't a bad thing all on its own... but he does it to such an excessive degree.
Either way, being a proud owner of a pair of HIIs.... I almost completely disagree with his thoughts [8-)]
The Heresy IIs may shy in comparison to my Cornwalls and my LaScalas but I love them all them same!

Cal pretty much covered it! I will just ephasize what he said about making sure the voice coils do not bottom out. Speaking from experience with a set of Heresy IIs, 25 watt spikes can make the woofers bottom out if you have low frequency material! So be careful and if you here a popping sound when your have a large bass spike like a kick drum turn the volume down. A couple times should not damage the woofers unless you way over do it. But it will definitely scare the hell out of ya!
From what I read those 9090s are great amps. I have not had a chance to hear one myself but they are rated as the top of the Sansuis over at Audiokarma for sure. Enjoy your new gear!

The easy thing would be to build a Cornwall Bass bin with those K-33s. It would be an easy well known solution to some nice clean bass. But.... a nice bass horn would even better! ;-)

It is indeed an iPhone app. I believe that is FFT analyzer. Is that right? I'm getting an Iphone 3GS when I get back to the States. Unfortunately, Apple "improved" the wind filter on the 3gs making it useless with this app. The 3gs mic input is strongly attenuated below about 250hz I believe. :-( Oh well. It looks to be a very useful little app tho.

I wish I had a chance to meet you in person! I would've been at your thing in Indy this last summer but duty called and I had to travel where I am now (Iraq). You have been a large part of this community for sure. I constantly dig through old posts and I usually see you on any thread that is worth reading and a lot that aren't! I saw Lamb of God with Gorjida and I think Machine Head back in '07. It was a pretty good metal show. However, I did not like Lamb of God's sound setup one bit. It was excessively loud.... I mean uncomfortably loud. My ears were ringing for a few days afterwards. Not related to Metallica, but I thought it was semi relavent.

I imagine the Crites Xovers would be a nice update. Of course, it depends on the production date of the HIIs. When the quality of the crossovers was down... it would be a huge set up. Just my 2 cents. However, I think the HIIs do sound pretty sweet as is.

A little update. I finally have the money to spend on the Yamaha Seperates. I purchased a C-70 for the Preamp. I am on the lookout right now for either two M-60s or two M-65s. I am also on the look out for a T-70 Tuner. When I finally get them, I will post some thoughts comparing them two the CR-1020. Does anyone have suggestions on an affordable DAC? I'm looking for one that will work for 2 channel audio. I want to to accept a Coax input, 96Khz/24 bit capable, and affordable. I am thinking around $200 to $300. That is about all the budget will allow. I have been researching the Gigawork DAC available on ebay. It is a sorta DIY DAC for about $109 + Op Amp upgrade for about $30 plus around $50 shipping for the both. But, It is hard to find alot of info about the DAC. There is a lengthy discussion at diyaudio, but it focuses alot on modding it to use Transformers for outputs. I am not to fond of that idea considering that the transformers will put me out around $150 to $200. I greatly would appreciate any input!

How could this woofer get blown?
I have a pair of LS that had a woofer blown when I bought them. My Dad has a pair that had a woofer with a toasted voice coil. How does this happen? Too much power! [H] FWIW, I have accidently made my LS woofers bottom out with only around 10 watt spikes. Really low frequency spikes take only a little bit of power to make the K-33 in a LS bin bottom out. In this case, it was a Kick Drum from an Alex Skolnick Trio album. Since you have some sound coming from the bass bin but not a lot, I would pull the woofer and visually inspect it. It is likely it will move very roughly when you push softly on the woofer or it is blown.

They were sold with only one Bass driver. It is located inside the dog house of the bass horn. Each cabinet also has a midrange horn and a tweeter. You can see these from looking at them from the front or through the back section by the crossover.

I'm not certain that the mid and highs would be directly comparable either. The Forte II does have a tractrix midrange horn. I imagine that will change the sound compare to the Forte and the KLF series. Unfortunately, I have no first hand experience with either of them. Though, I would jump on the chance to listen to any of them. I'm sure someone can chime in with some direct comparisons.

Wow..... do disregard the majority Frzninvt's post.
He makes one valid point, the system wll only be as good as it's weakest link. That is all the more reason to start with making the Cornwall's as best as they can be. Then, worry about the rest. Take it one step at a time so you can make every piece the best it can be!

Try a Heresy! You can find heresies for pretty cheap. If you can find a single Heresy, it will be even cheaper. The are probably the best timbre match in a small package for the older heritage speakers. If you really want to buy new, you could buy the Heresy III. However, the timbre will not match as well as an original Heresy. The Academy would be your second best timbre match in a small package. I doubt the WC-24 would match the Cornwalls very well at all. My Dad has an RC-7 he uses with LaScalas and previously with Cornwalls. It is a great center channel, but it is nowhere near a timbre match.

I would be interested in seeing the triple woofer bass bin. I could only imagine the kind of output you could get from that sort of a monster. It seems JCs mind is always coming up with new creations. I am also inrigued by the center channel idea. That would be an awesome center channel. Interesting thinking indeed ssctrojan. I do think that this thread should NOT have been entitled jub knockoff argument. The previous thread was locked for a reason.. We should do our best to keep the discussion away from that to prevent this thread being locked. Instead make this thread about these other two topics, the triple driver bass bin and the center channel concept.

This is all great reading! I do love to read what some of the great minds come up with. Kudos to Klipsch for allowing the type of discussions that they do on the forums. I think a lot of that credit goes to Amy since it appears she spends the most time on the forums out of the Klipsch employees. Personally, I am always open to affordable upgrades to Klipsch products. I can understand the desire to keep the Heritage series some what original as well as the desire to hav them improved from the factory. But, I will not jump into that arguement.... I can only afford used Klipsch Heritage. So, it does not affect me personally. I dream of the day I can afford new heritage... because that means Jubilees! BUT, i never tire of reading about the upgrades! I especially enjoy when there is technical data to support those upgrades.
