  1. I'm 51. When I was a kid I was the geek with the transistor radio under the covers when I was supposed to be sleeping. Cream, CREEDENCE, The Who, CSNY, Zep, Stones, and as much as I hate to admit it, top 40 trash. My musical tastes evolved as I grew older and became exposed to more and more music.

When I got my first job at 15 I bought a Kenwood amp, a Dual TT and a pair of Bozak speaks. Since then music has been a huge and constant part of my life. Other hobbies have come and gone, but my stereo(s) still take center stage. In fact, the older I get the more important they are.

It's pretty surreal to just sit there and get goose bumps over something that comes in through holes in your head!

  2. Anybody who finds themselves in Virginia Beach is welcome to stop by for a listen. I think that the CFs are highly underated, especially when you consider the price at which you can introduce a pair into your domo. You can save enough ching to update other components in your system and drown in bourbon.

I have no doubt that the big H-mothers (KHorns, LaScalas) etc are amazing and someday I'll own a pair. Until then I'm thrilled with what my ears have sucked in since the day I bought mine. Buy a pair and listen for a while. Make the next step up the ladder and sell the CFs if you no longer like them. Even a marginalized Klipsch speaker beats the snot out of 90 percent of whats out there.

    (POI)

  3. I have both CF3s and Fortes (not II's). You cannot go wrong with either, but I tend to prefer the CFs. Those jumbo boxes can make huge sound.

Find the money and buy both. Everyone needs more than one system, or set them up for HT. Or, whichever pair you don't buy, post them up here and someone will be very happy.

  4. Nothing like aural Reefer Madness!! I travel far too much in pursuit of the almighty dollar and when gone I have horrible DTs and slip into a miserable funk. My iPod offers little solace. My car stereo just a tad more. It's pathetic.

Then when I return, I just piss off my neighbors with my hideous addiction. I like to combine music with plenty of alcohol and cigar smoke for the ultimate speedball.

One day I'll build a suitable man-cave out in the sticks or line my domo with lead. Till then I have to temper my addiction.

  5. My brother has a pair and they sound great. I've never heard CWalls so I can't comment other than, "there's no replacement for displacement". So, to compare the two hardly seems fair at all.

    Jump.

  6. Can't help you with the CF1's, but I have a pair of CF3s which I love. I scored them very cheap on CL. I had heard that parts were tough to find so I also picked up a replacement tweeter on ebay.

After about a year I began to have some hi-frequency issues on one speaker. It turned out that one of the crossovers was dicked up. Both went to Bob Crites and his son did a very nice job on the recap / rewire.

On some recording I find them to be tad harsh and have to pay attention to the tone controls, but most of the time they just sound great. I am amazed at how clear they are when the big knob gets turned clockwise.

    Enjoy.

  7. My brother used an aerosol stainless steel cleaner from ZEP on an old Pioneer amp and it came out fantastic. I tried to clean up a few units with various methods / products and my results weren't nearly as good. I did have success, but at twice the effort and with half the results.

You might look into this next time you're at Homies Depot or Lowes.

  8. I'm far too ignernt to add much to this forum beyond my stoopit questions. I are just a neophyte in the cauldren of Klipsch and ultra Hi-MF-Audio. My low post count will reflect this, as well as my IQ.

But, it's fun trying to figure out what most of you are talking about while slowly discovering what I've been missing all these years. Cheers and many thanks for the edjumacashun. Thanks to PWK and this forum, my enjoyment of music has doubled in the last 3 years.

  9. Thanks for the reply. It is a Class A, but I still thought that it was a tad on the high side. I am one of the cheapest guys on the site and I really enjoy picking up stuff for next to nothing. But, I didn't think that this fit the bill. My gut told me to avoid so thanks for the affirmation.

I also passed on a pair of KLF30s this week even though they are very high on my want list. The oak cabs were beat. I figure that a 4 foot tall speaker is going to dominate most rooms, so I want a set that looks good. Still holding out for something sweeeeeet.

So, now I've got money for bourbon and cubans. Or Dominicans. What's not to like?

  10. Mornings, the local Classical station over FM in the bedroom. Then I switch to the same over the PC so I can saturate the domo.

11-1300 it's usually Pandora while stumbling around in my black socks, wife beater and boxers.

After 1300, I'm genreally 60% CD, 30% vinyl and 10% Pandora or Digital through a hard drive.

My neighbors are generally pissed after 1900 when I like to stretch my woofers surrounds a bit. Usually CD at that point, but it might be Pandora if I am cooking and busy. Half an album just goes by too quick when my pots are hot.

  11. It's nice that one can spend so little money and still enjoy such accurate sound. I too liked the comment about "footprint and price". Not all of us can afford MacIntosh gear and K-Horns (although with CL the stuff just keeps getting closer and closer!). Whem my ship comes in, I'll be searching CL!

I picked up 4 KG1's for 80 bucks and just hung two of them on my boat. NICE! I also have a pair of 3.2's and love them. Currently in the spare bedroom but the plan is for them to end up as rears or in the garage. I have heard the 4's and the 5.2's and both are excellent speakers. Thank you Mr Klipsch!

  12. Thanks Frank.

I got it figured out. What made the most sense didn't work. This was due to operator / installer error (ME). I still had the receiver dorked up. Muting (which I never use) was depressed and I didn't notice it.

I ran a simple RCA jack from the HD box to the TV/SAT input on the receiver and all is well. I was rushing, didn't the manual and had to leave on a trip. I hoped that asking here would point out something obvious, or radically different. I'm basically a Luddite.

THANKS. Now I just have to get the Niles wired and I can make noise proper!

  13. I ran the RCAs from the back of the TV to the INPUT TV/SAT on the amp. Selected TV/SAT on the face of the unit and still no luck.

I'm currently on the road and its not in my face so...I can't troublshoot any more till Monday.

Game plan is to download the Manf PDF (Sony) and look at what they suggest. I picked this thing up cheap on ebay with no manual, so I am a bit blind. The manual fof the TV itself is also a bit vague (at least to me) and I'm a bit of a dolt, so I'm in a swirling vortex of confusion. No big deal. I go through life like this.

Threre is one big honkin cable (6 way I thnk) that the cable tech installed betweent the HD Box and the TV. There are no audio outputs other than what he hooked up.

Sounds like a good opportunity to just chuck the old amp and get a new one! hahahaha (no fundage at this particular time).

  14. I got a pair of 3.2s in almost exactly the same condition. I plan on using them in a garage or shop. Or, perhaps as rears on a HT setup if they can be somewhat hidden and / or clean up nicely.

I am simply going to sand them throughly with a fairly aggressive orbital and then paint em semi gloss black. There are no chips in the veneer, but both have irregular tops from miscellaneous plant overwaterings and rings from wet beers and cocktails. What is it with peeps who think that putting something WET on wood, particularly nicely finished wood is a good idea? Reminds me of my starter wife, but I won't go there.

I got them for next to nothing, and even if I do a lousy job, they'll still come out OK, and certainly better than the way they look today. Because they have feet, (spikes) turning them upside down isn't really an option.

These little speakers really surprised and impressed me. Right now they are in my daughters room and wired up with her KSF 10.5s on a vintage Sansui. They sound mo' betta' than the KSFs. I will be interested to see what you think of the 5.5s.

    Good luck.

  15. UV isn't an issue as they are mounted facing down under a fixed overhead T-Top. The only water they'll see is splashing from the gals dancing (both in and out of their skimpies), and the occasional slosh of beer. It's too bad that I can't come up with some type of tupperwear lid to fit them perfectly. That way I could leave them covered up when not in use and when underway. The boat is loud and its difficult to really hear them (well) when running. Perhaps I can find some tupperwear bottoms which would fit over them? All I need is one inch or so. Hmmm.

Its the salt in the air that will get them eventually. My JBLs were white and by the end of the first year the metal grills looked like shinola. So I merely pried them off and tossed them out. The cones themselves still worked fine. The speakers are out of the way and don't really require the physical protection. And since the cabinets are tough plastic, I don't see the need to coat them with anything.

They are at their best when at anchor or tied up someplace out in the middle of no where. Because sound travels so readily over water I try to keep the volume down when there are others about.

  16. Helo Gents. This week I picked up a 42" Samsung Plasma at Best Buy. $500.00. Seemed to good to pass up. It's too small, but it stretched the hell out of my meager bank account as it was. So, I just have to suck it up.

Today Cox cable came and installed the miracle HD box.

My question is how do I get the SOUND to travel from the Box or TV - TO the HT receiver so that I can listen to the HD music channels through my boomers? I assume that it's a simple cable hookup, but I am clueless about what type of cable I need.

    1. Can I assume that a simple two line RCA jack will work or am I smoking Ganja? I know next to nothing about HT. For now, I will be using my CF3s for fronts and an Academy center. I won't have rears due to the layout of my domo. Perhaps later.

    2. Can I assume that there are easily recognizable jacks on the TV for OUT and likewise IN on the reciever. Or is there some miracle fusions technique involved?

I also picked up a Niles SPK-1 and will eventually wire that in so I can continue to use my main two channel rig when I just want to spin records or discs in the old fashioned manner. I have yet to acquire a suitable 12volt source for the switching. Not really sure about that.

    3. Is that an item I can pick up cheaply at RatioShack or should I look on line?

Thanks for the advice. The TV manual is so far over my comprehension that I am seriously thinking about having myself institutionalized.

  17. Ratso Rizzo:
Here I am, goin' to Florida, my leg hurts, my butt hurts, my chest
hurts, my face hurts, and like that ain't enough, I gotta pee all over
    myself.
    [Joe Buck laughs]
    Ratso Rizzo: That's
    funny? I'm fallin' apart here!
    Joe Buck: It's just
    - Know what happened? You just took a little rest stop that wasn't on
    the schedule!

I picked these up off CL. I got 4 of them for 80 bucks not knowing what the heck I'd ever do with them. It just seemed too good to pass up. So, given that they have plastic cabs and metal mesh grills (which will eventually rust I'm afraid) I figured that they'd survive a season or three on the Cheeze Whiz. They live under a waterproof hard top, and they should stay fairly dry. They kick the tar out of the JBLs they replaced that's for sure. One of the JBLs broke which necessitated the change. I'm glad that it did!

WRT The Twins, should Mr. Enrico Salvatore Rizzo decide that he could use a day aboard my yot in the sun, he will be welcome just as long as the limber and eager dynamic duo accompany him! Last time I saw him though, he looked a little, cool and pasty!

    Ratso Rizzo:
I'm walking here! I'm walking here!
