  1. Looking good. 4 woofer cutouts per side? Your not fooling around. I have read about some infinite baffle designs, and they do seam to dig deep and produce some high sound presure levels. My son actually came up with an idea about cutting some holes into the face of my false corners and putting in an 18" woofer in each one of them. Maybe I have to think about that idea some more. The false corners are 3-1/2' from the wall and have a sealed top on them to the back and side wall. They are 6-1/2' wide and about 5' high. They have a double 3/4" plywood face and top with 2x6" framing on the inside. That relates to a huge speaker box size. All I have to do is close off the back, and seal them up. I can now pull the TV out of it's hole and crawl around inside of them. Maybe with a little help from some of you subwoofer nuts I can figure out the correct volume for the chosen speakers and give it a try. It is a shame not to make use of all that dead space.
  2. Rob, I know, I know, a subwoofer would be an easy build compared to bass horns. I have read most of yours and others post on the DTY subwoofers. I don't think anyone has compared their build againts a sub that I know. I may be wrong. I was about to build John Warrens 18" 6174 McCauley subwoofer when I heard of the Danley.
  3. I think that I would first fix the network. You need the right equipment to measure and test the driver and horn. I thought my 290-16K driver and 311-90 horn sounded good, untill I sent them off to John warren. He found a nasty peak in the 311 horn and used a notch filter in the network to correct it. I was floored with the difference in the sound when I did an A/B test with his network and the one that I was using.
  4. I would say that you can stack them with good results. Stacking them or putting them side by side is the way to go. When you start putting multiple subs around the room there will be too much sound canceling going on. Standing waves.
  5. QMan Is this the one you are referring to? http://www.danleysoundlabs.com/DTS20.html That's the one. Finally a sub for LaScalas and Klipschorns. I think subs like the Klipsch Ultra's, Velodyne DD18, Sunfire Signature, Aerial, are fine for LaScalas and Klipschorns when used in a small room ( say 20' x 20'). In a larger room say 20'x30' or more, or rooms that are open to other rooms, then you will need a sub with more output. With rooms of this manner you need to double or quadruple the power to your Klipschorns and LaScalas to fill the room with sound to match the sound level of the small room. That is when these other subs bottom out.
  6. Hello Rick, I don't want you to go to the trouble of unboxing the Klipsch subs just for me. I already have a feeling that they won't have the punch & control that the DD18 has. I'm just trying to figure out how the Klipsch subs compare to some of the subs that I'm familiar with. Your price is right for someone to buy them and then resell them if they don't like them, without losing much money. I can buy a pair and amp for $2,300.00. I'm tempted to do so, but I better play it safe and go with the Danley horn loaded sub. If you do compare them be sure to let everyone know what you think. I know that it will help others down the road. Q.
  7. How would you compare the DD18 and the Klipsch Ultra II's? If you could compare them it would give me an idea of how good the Klipsch subs are. I just read the review on the Klipsch subs in the Home Theater mag. and they are 3db down at 22Hz.
  8. I think that if you have to ask yourself that question, then the subs arn't enought.
  9. Something like this. Left click on the drawing and it may open for you.
  10. There is apair of these subs and amp on Audiogon for $2,400.00. and the price encludes shipping. Are these subs letting people down?
  11. Shawn, My processor does have that feature, I guess it's time to play with it and set it up do do it's job.
  12. Like Chris said, it does have a normal footprint standing up right. You can also lay this sub on it's side behind a sofa. It has potential. When you have a Klipschorn theater, you don't have any corners left over to put a sub in. The Danley is powerful enough to place just about anywhere.
  13. The Danley DTS-20 sub has my attention. I had to call them and ask them some questions. I've been thinking of a different sub for some time now, ever since I blew the driver on my Sunfire Signature. I still use a Signature with my Klipschorn theater. The room is 17' by 50'. The Signature does find in the room up to about 96db. 96 to100db. on the sound level meter in this room is taxing the sub. I have to be careful and turn the sub down when I push the sound level over 100 db. That is where the Klipschorns can keep on going and the sub is at it's peek.
  14. Coytee, I never had to take my tweeters apart, so I don't know what the diaphrams look like. I would guess that new diaphrams would sell for around $100.00 each. Not all of my Altec 290 drivers measured and sounded alike. I bought a couple of new diaphragms for them so I would know what I had and what it was susposed to sound like. That is how I learned what the diaphram was like and how to install them. It turned out that all six of my drivers had the same diaphrams, but a couple of them had seen better days.
  15. I Like! The Halo C1 & C2 both have these extra programble channels. These channels have a high pass and low pass filter. You can mix as much as you want into them from any of the processors 7 channels. You can adjust time delay, reverb, and more. I feed the right front effect channel 90% of the right main and 10% of the left main. I tried mixing some of the center channel into it , but I didn't like it that way. Just the opposite mix for the left front effect. I have the delay set up to make these channels seem as if they are about 10' behind the mains. I cut off the bass to the LaScala front effects at 60 Hz. You know that I had a Yamaha RX-V2092 and a Yamaha RX-V3000. These are the receivers that got me hooked on front effect channels. You also know that I liked the sound of these receivers with Heritage speakers. I have alot of respect for Yamaha's higher end receivers, but there is something to be said for seperates. The RX-V3000 did a rather good job with the McIntosh amps. The McIntosh amps made a nice improvement over the amps in the Yamaha receiver. I lived with that for a while. Then I had to see if a A/V processor would furher improve the sound. The C1 didn't disappoint me, it too made a noticable difference in the sound. Better channel separation, lower noise floor. Much improved center channel sound. I could go on, but I'm getting away from your questions. John was doing good when I lasted talked to him, which was a few months ago. He is enjoying that beast of a subwoofer that he built. He also talked about a few new ideas he had for improving the sound of a bass horn.
  16. I've been in a rut, and I havn't changed anything for almost a year now. I've been busy with work and palying with cars with my kids. I'm also finally content with the way the system sounds, and I think that has a lot do with why I backed off. I now need to retire the home made Imperial rear surrounds and the Dean back center and use Klipschorns that match my mains and front center. I have three stock Klipschorns to do so. I feel that it may be a waste to convert all three, I might feel better selling a pair or two and making the bass horns myself. If I'm feeling lazy at the time I'll modify them. I also have 3 each 290-16K drivers and 311-90 horns begging to be used. I only have one network, so I may have Jorn Warren build me two more. Then I need to buy 3 more JBL 2404H tweeters. There is one more reason that I have been putting off changes. I don't like the room anymore. It's 17' wide and 30' to the bar wall behind the Dean. Then it is open for another 20' (the kitchen). The room sounds good, and part of the reason is that it is open in the back, but it's now too small. I want to try a room at least 22' wide x 40' deep. I want to sit in the center of the room. I'll show you a drawing later if you like. I'm trying to figure out the best way to go. New house, or modify this one. Do I sound confused? Well, I am. After all of the above is accomplished then I want to experiment more with the Dean. Who knows? There is a chance that I may replace all the Klipschorn bass horns with the Deans and turn up the sub another 10 or 20 Hz. I believe that djk once said that when you hear a sax through 311-90 you have to whip the spit off of your face. I find that true. I also know that when I hear a bass guitar or kick drum through the Dean that it sends shivers up my spine.
  17. Be carefull buying used JBL 2404H tweeters that were used in pro set-ups. You can see that all these tweeters were repaired once, the labels are missing from all of them.
  18. That picture is on the home theater guide web site. www.HTguide.com I was active there on the Parasound Halo forum when I was deciding to buy the Halo C1 processor. I see Trey visits the site once in a while, they have a section on Klipsch speakers.
  19. Good eyes. Yea, those trees only grow in Hope. The knotty pine that I bought didn't have enough character for me. I painted in more then half of the knots and the dark grain. I was just fooling around and painted in Klipsch.
