  1. Call your local cabinet shops, and ask them if they sell or make cabinets with thermofoil doors. Many shops will build the boxes and order the thermofoil doors to put on them. If you find one that does this , they can order you sheets of this stuff. It won't come with a self stick backing . You will have to use contact cement. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  2. Mike L., Read my last post under Tech. Questions, McIntosh or B&K. I'm not putting your visit off, we can do it once I get everything back together. I can't let you listen to Klipschorns without good solid corners. This is something I've been meaning to fix. Now I can blame this extra work on you, so hang in there. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  3. This has developed in quite a project. I had to run the wire for the 30 amp circut around the outside of the house in conduit. Then I had to cut holes in the siding in orded to fish the wire down the inside wall. So, now I'm putting up new siding on the back of the house. I'm also building new falce corners for the front Klipschorns. I want to angle the speakers a little different. Plus the drywall has come loose on the side walls next to the K-Horns. A month ago I started hearing some loud vibrations, which sounded like it was comimg from the Klipschorns. The drywall on the far side of the speakers broke loose from the screws which hold it in place. So it now keeps slapping againts the firing strips. I'm getting rid of the two side pieces that are on each side of the center T.V. unit. This will give me the space I need for the new corners. I am also going to pull the center unit off the wall another foot. This will allow me to mount the LaScalas used for the front effect channels 2-1/2 feet behind and to the right and left of the Klipschorns, instead of on top of them. They will sit on top of the new falce corner walls. This will now place them closer to where Yamaha recommends. Well, I have to get back to work, Maybe I can get this all done before the amp arrives. I also ordered Outlaws ICBM. Later, Q. ------------------ Q-Man This message has been edited by Q-Man on 01-06-2002 at 08:25 AM
  4. It's the McIntosh. The lowest price out of three dealers was $2600.00 plus tax. None to demo & no trial exchange period. They couldn't answer any of my questions, I had to go to the company direct to get answers. So, I said the heck with them & ordered a new one factory sealed for $2200.00 including shipping from a guy I found on ebay. Not at all how I expected to buy a McIntosh. 5. Just want to let everyone know that I appreciated all your comments. Eric, the pres. of Cinpro has called me to discuss his amps. They do sound very good. If I had Klipsch speakers like the KLF's or the new Reference line I would go with Cinpro. The Heritage line just doesn't need the 250 watts per channel. Eric does state that I could just turn down the gain controls to between 9 & 12 o'clock . He is calling me monday with some prices on some amps that he let Tannoy barrow for a show. If the prices are too good to refuse , I'll go with the 2K6-3. If not, Ron Cornelius, the product Mgr. for McIntosh has me 90% convinced to go with the Mc126. He has called me twice, instead of answering my emails. After we discused a number of issues that I had, he jokingly said, what do you think Paul is using with his Klipschorns? I kind of feel safe with a 50 year old name. It's sure hard to buy without a dealer demo. Meanwhile, I started to wire up a dedicated 30 amp 120 volt circut today. I got the idea from the Cinepro web site. tblasing, I checked out audio classics, thanks. The prices seem high on the used Mac stuff. I did email them some figures that I would be willing to pay. We'll see what happens there. Q. ------------------ Q-Man This message has been edited by Q-Man on 01-01-2002 at 08:44 PM
  6. My guess, is that cabinet will roll off at 50 to 60Hz at best. Below that you will still need a sub, just like the K-Horns do below 40Hz. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  7. Mike, Use a single channel from your source material and hook one speaker up to speaker A and the other speaker to speaker B. You can compensate for the different sensitivity in the speakers by using the gain controls on the power amp. Then keep switching back and forth between the speakers. That one sounds better in the low end , no, that one does, and so-on. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  8. Mike, You don't have to bring both, one will do. You may be surprised, The Chorus's might be your choice. You just can't tell untill you do a side by side. Not any one speaker will give everything you want. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  9. Mike, You could simply rotate the raditor and start fresh with four new screw holes. The gasket on the raditor will seal off the existing scwew holes if they go thru the panel. Or, drill thru the existing holes and use T-nuts. We can demo or A,B the KG5.5's . I also want to do this with the University , LaScala, K-horn, & maybe the Imperial if we can. I've found out over the years that unless you A-B them againts some reference speaker that you can be fooled. I brought home about six different speakers, thinking that they sounded good in the store, or by themselves. But, once home where I could set them up next to a K-horn or LaScala for an A-B test, then the thruth is heard. You should bring a Chorus with you, if you can. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  10. Mike, I hope to have you over soon. I'm in the process of getting a new amp., and I have do do some taking apart first. This amp. requires a dedicated 120 volt/30 amp circut. I know how to wire a 240 volt /30 amp, but I never heard of a 120 volt one. I have do do a little reasearch . Then I have a cathedral ceiling that I can't get into to run the wire, so I'm having fun. I'm just glad that I have two sons to help with the lifting of these speakers. You can't move the K-horns untill you take the LaScalas off of them . The LaScala center channel is the worst to deal with. We can do some comparing when you come. we'll talk about that later. 11. To you, maybe $450.00 . You have to understand that I payed $400.00 plus $80.00 shipping. Then I had to fix them as discribed. Then I even touch-up painted them. Remember they had to look good going to my mother. I think they are 4 years old. I would say they are like the KLF-10. Your Chorus's would be more like the KLF-30. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  12. Mike, $500.00 for the KG5.5's . I would use a KLF-C7 with them. I have one that I used for a few months, before I decided that it couldn't cut it with the K-Horns. I'm not trying to sell you anything,I'm just giving you my opinion. Now you have me thinking. I have enought stuff to put together another system. There is no end to this madness. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  13. They are O.K. , but have no place among my Klipschorns, LaScalas and other fully horn loaded speakers. They sound more like some bookshelf speaker compared to my other stuff. Like I said, I bought them for my mother not myself. I'll put them in my local paper one of these days when I feel like giving someone a demo. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  14. Keith, Oak Veneer, black satin. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  15. I bought a pair of KG-5.5's for my mother for X-mas & my father won't let her keep them. He says they are too big. Know I have to put them up for sale one of these days.I Can't win sometimes. When I bought them , the backs of the cabinets were loose. I didn't notice this untill I cranked up the volume. It sounded like the woofers were bottoming out. I applied slight presure to the cones with my finger tips to see if the noise would stop. This will restrict enought movement of the cone in order to tell if that's the problem. My son was standing in back of the speaker at this time and saw the problem. The center of the back was loose and vibrating in and out 1/2". What a loud slapping noise it was making. I took the drivers out to gain access to the back from the inside. The backs are just hot glued in. I cut some 3/4 by 3/4 pine strips and caulked and screwed them into the sides & back of the cabinet. While I was at it, I did this all around the inside of the cabinet, to make sure that they are air tight. I've heard of people having this problem with the KLF series. Maybe this is also your problem. Just crank them up and see if there is any movement in that back panel, and feel for air leaks. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  16. I've been doing a little more looking around, or should I say reading and calling. I think the days of showroom visits are gone, at least in my area. Most of the so called dealers that I've called are custom install places. They don't cary the product, they are authorized dealers and will order one for you. The few with showrooms have a very limited selection. I've broadened my search by checking into Parasound, Rotel, Power Modules, and Cinepro. Right now, Cinepro is looking rather good. Their web site is informative and I've found some good reviews on some of their amps. You can order factory direct with a 30 day trial period. They even offer a customer upgrade service to get you into a newer model. This also means they have refurbished units that they sell with a 2 year warranty. I'm going to call them today and I might order a 2K6 3 6x250 watt. I'm a little concerned about all that wattage, but this unit is the lowest wattage amp that they make. I may even order a refuurbished unit for about half the price of a new one. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  17. boa, The B&K list for $3300.00, the dealer will do $2800.00. How do you like that Manantz MA-6100 mono amp? I could get 6 Or 8 of them.I just looked it up in Sound & Vision's buyer's guide. What few specs. they have look good. I might try the B&K , One of the Mac dealers is calling me tomarrow with some answers to my questions. He has to call the main office to find out a few things. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  18. boa12, I'm using a Sunfire Signature Sub. I pulled up some old pictures of my set up. Look under Odds and Mods (Q-Mans system) . Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  19. Boa, Some pictures of my system that John Albright posted for me. It has changed a little since then. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  20. I called 5 more Mac dealers today, at a distanse of 60 to 100 miles from my home. Non of them display and demo the amps that I'm interested in . One of them has a mac tube amp on his floor and says that it's no good . He said that I should come in and listen to the Bryston and Proceed amps. According to him these brands are much better then the mac's. If I insist, he will order me a Mac. I won't tell you what this guy thinks of Klipsch. The same goes for the other Mac dealers, They don't have any amps that you can demo. They will order you one, but you can't return it for another if you don't like it. I thought that I might order the Mc126 for $2800.00. If I didn't think it was quite right for me, I would bite the bullet and return it for the $4000.00 Mc206. No such luck! Only one of the dealers thinks that the Mc126's 80 watts per channel at 8 Ohms is enought to drive Klipschorns ans LaScalas. The others say that these speakers dip to much into the 3 Ohm range and this requires a lot of current from an amp. Therefore, I need the Mc206. I first found a guy on ebay that sells the Mc126 for $2150.00 and the Mc206 for $3300.00. He will take them back for repairs and pay for the shipping . This is so the local Mac dealers won't know that he is selling them in their territory. This sounded a little fishy, so I decided to buy from the authorized dealers. BUT, now that even the dealers won't let me return a mac, can't really answer my questions, can't demo one, and complained when I talked them down to the prices of $2800.00 & 4000.00, this first guy I spoke to looks rather good. Retail on these amps Is $3000.00 & $4700.00. I expected a lot more from a McIntosh dealer. Now I'm kind of back to square one. The B&K dealer will take the amp back if I don't like it. That's why I'm asking for opinions, no test drives here. I'll keep you posted. Q. ------------------ Q-Man This message has been edited by Q-Man on 12-20-2001 at 06:48 PM
  21. I'm now using Yamaha's RX-V3000 & RX-V2092 receivers. I won't give them up, because I want a processor with front effect channels. I think both receivers sound great with my Klipschorns & LaScalas. They are dead quiet. The reason I may go with seperate power amps. is because I want to try Outlaws new Bass Manager. This crossover must go between a processor and power amp. . I'll use the RX-V3000 as the processor by use of it's pre-outs. The amps. below are the ones that I'm considering. McIntosh MC206, 6x200 at 4 Ohms, 6x120 at 8 Ohms McIntosh MC126, 6x120 at 4 Ohms, 6x80 at 8 Ohms Both are solid state. Circut configuration is Push-Pull complementary. ( what ever that is ) B&K Reference 7270, 7x200 at 8 Ohms B&K AV6125, 6x125 at 8 Ohms Both class A/B with B using Mosfet output stages. ( supposed to be tube like ) As a plus, maybe the total sound quality of the system will sound better with one of these amps. Any of you have any opinions on these amps, or at least opinions on McIntosh vs. B&K ? The McIntosh dealer says the Mac's will be better sounding . The B&K dealer can't give an opinion, because he has never heard any McIntosh. By the way, they are both Klipsch dealers. The Mac dealer is taking $1200.00 off the list price of the MC206 & $900.00 off the MC126. The B&K dealer will only come down $200.00 . It's not the power of these amps that concern me, but the higher power ones seem to have better specifications. The Mac dealer says that the higher power unit sounds better. Q. P.S. Second thought, maybe I should forget about bass management all together and just use more subs. ------------------ Q-Man This message has been edited by Q-Man on 12-19-2001 at 08:08 PM
  22. JMON, My son was looking at the sample last night. He now wants me to repaint my 3 pairs of LaScalas. He likes the high gloss look much better then the satin black finish that I used on two pairs of them. One of my pairs is still raw. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  23. JMON, email me your address, & I'll mail you the sample piece of plywood that I painted. The gloss black paint looks best left alone. I can see my reflection in it. The satin Laq. top coat dulls the finish, but makes it much smoother to the touch. I would try a gloss Laq. top coat to see how that looks. I didn't have any. I brushed on the black gloss paint. What a pain in the butt to do it without seeing the brush strokes. This high gloss also shows all the minor imperfections in the plywood surface. You will have to first paint the plywood with a sanding sealer, and then sand with 220 grit. Then more sanding sealer & sand with 300 up to 400 grit. I didn't use any sanding sealer on my sample piece, you will see why it needs it first. You can see all the 220 grit scratches left in the plywood surface. Three coats of the black paint with sanding in between them doesn't hide them. If you can, do yourself a favor and use a spray gun, or try a few different brands of spray cans. I brushed mine ,because I assumed that's how you are going to do it.I wanted to see if it could be brushed on. Like I said, it can, but it will take a lot longer and a lot more work. This is more like an automotive finish and you wouldn't attempt to paint your car with a brush. Buy the way, I'm no expert. 24. You can tell me here ,or email me a price for the AL-3's. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  25. Mike, I probably didn't recognize your email and deleated it. I'll email you after X-mas & we'll set up a time for you to come over. If your able to, and want to go to the trouble, you can bring one of your speakers with you to compare. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
