  1. The Crites crossovers worked out very well. They smoothed out the sound quite a bit and brought out more detail. The titanium diaphragms are a big improvement over the stock mylar, lots more sparkle in the highs. I tend to agree with your thoughts on the horns in separate boxes but still find it quite interesting that someone tried it. I lined the inside of my cabinets with thin .25 inch high density foam and it helped dampen them without altering the internal volume. The low and mid bass sounds tighter and smoother since I did this. Regards, Sam
  2. I'd love to see some photos of your 5.5s. I've had mine since 1996 and can't seem to part with them. I've installed Crites titanium diaphragms and crossovers in them but that's as far as I've gone, so far. The mods on yours sound very interesting and I'd really like to see what's been done to them. Regards, Sam
  3. Of course the Crites' mods won't help with the hiss. I'm sorry if I was misleading in my post. I seriously doubt if the hiss is originating from his speakers, hum or smoke possibly, but not hiss. Regards, Sam
  4. The only hiss I get through mine is when I'm playing vinyl through my Jolida tubed phono amp. I've owned my 5.5's since 1994. You might want to consider Bob Crites' titanium diaphragms for the horns and his crossovers. They really do make quite an improvement over stock. Enjoy and welcome to the ranks of the doomed. Regards, Sam [6]
  5. 5.5's have 95db sensitivity. A 25 watt amp will drive them to cataclysmic volume levels. Regards, Sam [H]
  6. I like my Modified KG 5.5's (Crites titanium diaphragms and crossovers) just fine, thank you very much. I could give a flying rat's *ss what dealers think of them. Regards, Sam [H]
  7. I will absolutely post pictures when I get it, it should ship tomorrow from California. I've been salivating over this table for years and finally gave in and spent the dough to get one. This one has all the accessories, tools, setup jig, clamp, and the original box. I won it for $1250.00 in an auction on Audiogon, that seems to be the going rate for used ones nowadays. Still a lot cheaper than buying new. I've been using my JVC QL-Y66F since I bought it new back in the eighties so this should be quite the change for me. I've always wanted to try a belt-drive and I've never read anything but good reviews about the Scout. It should be very interesting to hear how it compares to one of Japan's wunderkinds from that era. I must say, I'm really looking forward to finally owning the Scout and playing around with it. Regards, Sam [][8][Y]
  8. WOO HOO!!! I finally pulled the trigger and bought a slightly used VPI Scout yesterday. I can't wait to get my hands on it, I haven't bought a turntable since 1985 when I got my JVC QL-Y66F that I'm still using today. I've got two LOMC's already on hand, a Denon DL-301mkII and an Audio Technica AT-33EV. I'm hoping they match up well with the Scout's JMW-9 arm. If there are any Scout owners out there who might care to pass on their wisdom and experience with this table I'd love to hear from you. Regards, Sam [H][Y][Y][Y]
  9. I get the distinct impression you rather like these things. I used two sided tape on mine. I could'nt be happier with the changes it produced on my 5.5's, much smoother and detailed. Regards, Sam [8][8][8][H]
  10. It really seems a shame to have to put the crossovers inside the cabinet, doesn't it? Enjoy!!!!!,Sam [H][]
  11. I'm running mine with an Adcom GFA-5500 and an Outlaw preamp with good results. I bought my 5.5's new in the early nineties and can't seem to get away from them. I tried some Jamo's a while back and ended up selling them and going back to the 5.5's. There's just something about Klipsch's sound that's addictive. Crites' crossovers really are worth the price, they smooth the sound, bring out more detail, and tighten up the bass response. IMHO I think you'll like the change they produce. The things are really well built, its a shame you have to put them inside the cabinet where you can't admire them. Regards, Sam [H]
  12. The factory crossovers don't even come close to Crites' replacements, they resemble little tinker toys compared to his units. As for rebuilding the originals you should go to his website. IMHO i would'nt bother with the stock units, spring for the extra cash and replace them. The Crites units are more than worth the extra outlay, they really make a big audible improvement on the 5.5. Also, Crites titanium diaphragms for the horns are a big improvement over the stock mylar, they are smoother with a lot more sparkle. And cheap to boot. Regards, Sam [H]
  13. She's probably single-ended and prefers a biased tube. Forgive me, I just could not stop myself. Sam [6]
  14. I have a friend who's been given one of these and I'm trying to gather some info for him. Here's what I know: Its old, direct drive, P-Mount cart. Anybody know anything about this table? Regards, Sam [H]
  15. I bought one a short while ago. After cleaning twenty-five records and looking at all the crud laying in the bottom I was initially impressed. When I played several of the cleaned lps I noticed a lot of crackling that wasn't there previously. Not so impressed then. I decided to reclean the twenty-five and make a few changes beforehand. I thoroughly washed the cleaning brushes, added some of my home brew record cleaner and used distilled water(50/50 mix in the tank), and after spinning them I rinsed them thoroughly before drying with microfiber towels. The first twent-five are now dead quiet, with the exception of any imperfections that existed to start with, and sound much better than they did before the first cleaning. I also noticed that after the second cleaning, using the modified solution, that there was even more crud in the bottom of the tank. This leads me to believe that the supplied detergent is a bit weak. Your results may differ from mine. Overall, the Spin Clean does a hell of a job for what it costs. Regards, Sam [H]
  16. Thanks for the info, my seller said that this one skips occasionally too. Probably has a trip to Parasound in it's future as well. Please disregard the multiple posts while answering Dennie, I'm pretty sure its just a flashback and they're not really there. Regards, Sam [:|]
  17. Holy Crap!!! This posted three extra times and I can't figure out how to delete them. HMMM, could be a flashback....interesting. Sam [6]
  18. Hey Dennie! WHAAZZUP!!! I bought one of these off E-Bay the other day cheap. I've already got a Parasound DAC-1100 and I kinda thought it'd be cool to have a matched pair sitting in the money pit...ooops!!!...I meant to say rack. I remember them being for sale back in the nineties but not much else. I guess that's better than the seventies, which I don't really remember at all. I contacted Parasound's service department and was informed that they could still fully service/repair it as necessary. The seller said it skipped occasionally which apparently, judging from what I've read on the net, is a common problem with these units. I'm going to be using it as a transport only so I don't really care about the outdated internal dacs, it just has to look pretty and spin discs. The DAC-1100 has multiple inputs so I don't have to make any changes to my existing rig. I've got a Parasound AVC-1800 preamp-processor that I haven't used in years (never did like the way it sounded in two-channel) that I ought to drag out and blow the dust off. Probably still wouldn't like it, but ya never know. The thing ought to be here tomorrow or the next day and then I'll know more about it. Best Regards, Sam [H]

  22. Anyone familiar with this nineties CD player? Thanks, Sam
  23. Has anyone heard or does anyone own this table? Its a bizarre looking critter, definitely cool, but still bizarre. Thanks, Sam [H]
  24. Anyone have any opinions/recommendations for new turntables in the $1000 price range? Thanks, Sam [H]
  25. I installed them today and all I can say is "HOLY CRAP !!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything sounds so much better. Bass is smoother, fuller, tighter. Mids are much fuller. Highs are way more distinct and rich. If you've got a set of 5.5's buy these crossovers TODAY !!! Its like having a new much better pair of speakers. Easy installation, excellent build quality. Money well spent. Sam [H]
