  1. Here is a pic of the only flaw the pair has. The price is now at $575. I agree with dtel about if I'm going to keep them for a while really whats the difference in the long run. But still I'd like to feel good that I'm paying a fair price. I'm not looking to steal them, I'd be happy to pay a fair price for them. I'm just not sure how much that damaged corner effects the price.
  2. I found a set of Forte II speakers that are kinda close to me (if you consider 380-400 miles close!!). They are 1990's, oak oil, consecutive serial numbers with the original boxes from the orignial owner. He is asking $675 for the pair. I've been watching eBay and Craigs list for a while and this seems high. He says they are very nearly perfect. There are only a few small chips in the veneer at the very bottom edges. I've searched on here and some of the posts are a few years old. I've got to factor in time and gas in to the mix which is not the sellers problem but effects the wallet all the same for me so I want to make sure I don't pay too much for the speakers in addtion to the cost of traveling to get them.
  3. I was going to post a picture of the foam/box but couldn't figure out how. I see the pic button on the toolbar but it wants a URL. Is there a way to get the pic right off my computer? I'm glad to hear the foam is factory. Petty but if it wasn't I'd wonder what else the prior owner did to it. Wow. with the center channel disconnected you can really tell how much work that speaker does in a HT setup.
  4. Right after I posted I did just that and found one of the bucking magnets was off of the woofer. There is foam inside my Academy. Is that stock?
  5. Has anyone had any problems with magnetic interference with an Academy on top their TV? I know it has shielded woofers and tweeter but I'm sure the Academy is what the problem is. I've got an older 36" TV that as soon as it dies I'll upgrade to a HDTV. I got the itch to put the Academy into my HT setup the other day and I noticed tonight that it was getting green and purple on top of screen. I took the Academy off the top of the TV and turned the TV off for a minute and when I turned it back on all is well. Any advice?
  6. An example of what I'm curious about is does the Academy match the KG 5.2's? The 5.2 has a Tractrix and the Academy doesn't. That is what I'm using for my fronts and center now. Would the 3.2's I'm using for the rears be better as the fronts and then move the 2.5's I have in my office to the HT as the surrounds be a better sounding system? My plan down the road is to find a pair of nice OO Chorus II or maybe Forte II for the fronts. So then would I be better to get the 5.2's out of the mix and use the 3.2's for surrounds? I've got the room so I planned on moving the 5.2's to the rear after adding the Chorus/Forte's. I'm off today so I guess I could just play with this idea and see how it sounds for myself but it would be nice to have a guide to help the buying decisions along. If the 5.2's prove to be a bad match I never would have bought them knowing that. I just wanted some bigger speakers in front until the right pair of Chorus/Forte come along locally. I would have just stayed with the 3.2's up front. Part of my concern of buying the wrong speaker is I use the auto set up on my Yamaha 663. I first had the KV-2 as my center and I thought it sounded pretty good as a HT set up. I hadn't planned on adding the Academy into the mix until I got the Chorus/Forte's in place but had the itch to play with it so I got it out and hooked it up. Did a re-auto set up and was shocked at how much better my whole system sounded. I think the 663 dumbed down all the speakers to compensate for the KV-2. I now worry what other little mismatches (ie the Academy/5.2's) might be holding back the system again. I realize the change from a KV-2 to an Academy was a big step, do you guys think when I get a pair of Chorus/Forte I'll get that same huge jump in sound quality?
  7. Does anyone have a link to a timbre matching guide for Klipsch speakers? I did a search and found one link but it didn't work. The post that had it was a few years old. I read the posts in this forum and some of the info contradict each other. Opinions differ I understand but there must be something from Klipsch that we can use as a guide.
  8. I was out Christmas shopping tonight and bought myself a Harmony remote. It seems to work pretty good. I think with a little fine tuning it will be great. Any advice on problems I may run across would be appreciated!
  9. I used the auto setup function on my 663 when I first set it up and was happy over all with the sound. To complicate matters I recently bought all of my equipment. Speakers and receiver are all new to me so I don't really have a benchmark as to what they should or could sound like, I only know they sound much better that my old stuff!! When I first used the auto setup the speakers I was using was a pair of 5.2's up front and a pair of 3.2's in the rear and a KV-2 for center. No sub or any 7.1 stuff. I thought it sounded great but a less bass than I expected so I've ordered a Sub-10 which I should receive in a few days. I was pretty disappointed in the bass from the 5.2's. I expected more. My original plan was to go with Chorus or Chorus II's for the front, an Academy for a center and the 3.2's in the rear. The guy I bought my Academy and 3.2's from was using that line up and was happy with it. I didn't buy his Chorus because shipping would be so expensive and planned to buy locally instead when a pair popped up. I found the 5.2's close to home and picked them up because they were in great shape, cheap and would match the 3.2's. Then found a package deal with a pair of 2.5's and a KV-2. I figured the Academy would be too much center for the 5.2's so I should get something smaller and I could use the 2.5's in a 7.1 if I ever go that way. OK, where am I going with this long story you ask. I hooked the Academy up for the first time with my new receiver and redid the auto set up just to see how it all sounds. I was blown away with how much better the system sounded. Yeah a KV-2 is no match for the Academy, that isn't where I'm going. Everything sounded better. The bass response from both the 5.2's and the 3.2's was great. So I switched from DVD to CD and again I was blown away with difference. The 5.2's have bass now. I still think I'll be glad I ordered the sub but the whole system sounded so much richer and fuller now. So my question is do you think the 663 is holding the rest of the system back to match the KV-2? I guess I didn't try the 2ch setting to listen to music before I hooked the Academy up and redid the set up. I listened to it in 7ch stereo and tried both straight enhancer and 7ch enhancer. Maybe in 2ch it would have sounded better. Maybe the 663 would only factor the 5.2's in to it's sound setting for the 2ch. I'm really considering using the Academy as my center. It sounds good with the 5.2's, maybe the 663 is doing a good job of blending them. I look at the specs on the 5.2's and the Academy and since they don't have the same tweeters I'm not sure if the timbre is right or not but it sounds good to my novice ears. But I don't want to use Academy if I can get the 663 setup to where the 5.2's can have the snap and bass that I'm hearing right now. I want to avoid using the Academy because right now the only place for me to put a center is on top the TV and the Academy is HUGE! I'm afraid my 6 year old son will somehow knock it off and at worst have it fall on him or at the very least damage the speaker. So again do you think the 663 is holding the rest of the speakers back to match the KV-2 and if does anyone with experience with the 663 see an easy fix? I want to avoid doing a manual set up because I'll agonize over the settings and never think it sounds right. Is there a way to use the auto but some how have the settings work the way I want? Right now I use front for the parametric equalizer type when I do the set up. My other choices are flat and natural. I'm sure as soon as I post this I'll go back to experimenting with the different settings, but I thought I'd ask here so I don't have to reinvent the wheel if someone has already figured this out.
  10. it controls my tv and my dvd player but not my cd player (sony) or my sat reciver (dish network 625) in truth it probably is easier to use the dish remote for dish stuff but I wish it controlled my CD player. I have a sony all in one remote from my old reciever but I can't find my CD remote for the CD player. I'm considering buying a DVD/CD player from Yamaha but I think I'll get by for now until blu ray players get cheaper and I'll get on to replace all of the above.
  11. I don' t thing the 663's remote has the ability to learn. I'm reading the manual with no luck so I google and find another person complaining that the remote is only programable by codes and doesn't have the ability to learn. If this isn't true and I'm missing something someone please let me know!
  12. I have not tried the learning function yet. Actually never thought of it. Thanks for reminding me of a cheap place to start. I was thinking of getting a univeral remote. I notice you had to program your Yamaha DVD player too? That surprises me since its a Yamaha. I'll say it again: I love this receiver. Not owning any other of the ones I looked at I won't say this is an endorsement to buy the 663 over anything else but for me not having a new receiver in over 18 years I can't believe how much better things are now. That auto EQ set up is the best. I'm sure people will say you can manually improve on it but I know I find comfort that it is done and done better than I probably could have done it.
  13. I'm trying to program my remote for my Yamaha 663 to work with my Dish Network 625 DVR. I've called Best Buy and they were no help. I'm going to email Yamaha next but I thought I'd ask here too in case anyone has already crossed this bridge before. There is no listing for any sat recivers on the list of remote codes in the manual. Thanks.
  14. Thats good, I was seconding guessing myself and if I had thrown money away on buying the sub now and not needing it later. I'm still second guessing myself for not going with the sub-12 instead of the sub-10. I think way too much...
  15. Thanks everyone for the input. I ended up going with the Yamaha 663. Tonights the first night with it and so far I just love it. For fronts I've got KG 5.2's, for rears KG 3.2's, for center I'm using a KV-2. I've got a Klipsch Synergy Sub-10 on the way off of ebay. I bought the KV-2 in a package deal with a pair of KG 2.5's. I asked him if he'd split the center from the 2.5's and he wouldn't so I asked what the set would cost and he only wanted $100 for everything. I saw a pair of KG 2.5's had just sold on ebay for $79 so I figure I can't get hurt too bad on that deal. I could use the 2.5's if I wanted to do a 7.1 instead of 5.1 but the way my living room is set up 7.1 wouldn't work that well. I looked at a pair of Chorus but decided to pass for the time being. From everything I've read says at or before 20 years they are going to need crossovers. The crossovers from Bob Crites cost more than the 5.2's I went with instead. I'm not saying the crossovers aren't worth the price or anything negative or that I think the 5.2's are a even substitute for Chorus, just that after buying the Yamaha 663, the 3.2's and the Academy my wallet needs a chance to catch up and the 5.2's seemed like a good match for a lot less money. So a little change of plans, I'll wait on the Chorus and put the Academy safe in the closet. When I decided to wait on the Chorus I decided I'd better get a different center and found that KV-2. Is that a good center for what I've got? I see the 2.2V or 1.2V are shown as related products for the 5.2's but the KV-2 on shows up for the 3.5's, but not the 5.5's. I guess be it the way the 663 auto adjusts everything or I just don't know better but I think everything sounds great now, and can't wait for the sub to arrive and re-auto adjust again!! One thought on the sub. Do you think if I'd have gotten the Chorus I'd still need a sub? Oh yeah the other reason I'm so quick to put the Academy away is I've got a 6 year old son and the thought of it falling off the TV haunts me. Maybe by the time I get something different for fronts he'll be older and it will be safer!!!! I get the vibe that some think of the KGs as a little bit lower on the food chain but I truely am thrilled with the way everything sounds. Maybe I just don' t know what I'm missing but for now this work for me.
  16. The passive radiator on one of my KG-3.2s has kind of a buzz to it sometimes and when you lightly push in on it it has a rough feel. The other has no buzz and feels smooth. Any ideas whats wrong?
  17. How would an Academy sound with KG 5.5s?
  18. Funny you bring up using Heritage speakers with KG's as rears. I stumbled across a pair of Cornwalls tonight about 10 miles from my house. I actually got on to ask how they would sound up front if I moved my KG 3.2s to the rear. For a center I've got an Academy waiting to be put to use. My plan was to buy bigger front speakers, I was thinking Chorus or Forte for the fronts but now these Cornwalls kind of popped up. They are 1979's, C-BR, and from the pics look like they are in pretty good shape. The owner says they work and nothing is wrong with them. I'll probably see/hear them in the next few days. What is a fair price for them. I realize that is hard to answer because so many things come into play but for an average set of Cornwalls that old what should I expect to pay? Another question is what should I expect to have to fix or freshen up? Crossover/caps? They are almost 30 years old so how well do Heritage speakers age? I saw on ebay today a pair of C III refurbs from Klipsch sold for $1913.88 (seems like a strange number but ok) plus $100 shipping. Makes me wonder if I should shy away from the old stuff and buy new/refurbs, if they come right from Klipsch they must be ok. Saying that, I realize I can get the old ones much cheaper but for $2000 I have a new pair and know what I'm getting. Ok, now I'm thinking outloud. If anyone has any advice to help me out I'd love to hear it.
  19. I've been googling looking for a good deal on a receiver. I keep finding comments like this: IMO, I think the Klipsch are excellent speakers, but can be on the bright side and the Yamaha sound is also very detailed, but very bright as well. I don't think it would be a good combo. I think something warmer would be a better receiver choice, to help control the famous Klipsch high end. Look at Denon or Harman/Kardon. You will get just as much sound detail and features as the Yamahas, but with a significantly smoother sound. I know a few people have suggested the Yamaha RX-V663 and that is the one I was kind of leaning towards but now I wonder. Any thoughts on this? Anyone get a Yamaha and was disappointed in the sound? My second choice is looking to be Harman Kardon AVR254 and third a few Onkyo's have caught my eye for the price.
  20. I just wanted everyone to know I'm not set on one of these three. If someone else has another brand or model I'd love to hear about it too.
  21. Any opinions on: Harman Kardon AVR254? Denon AVR-2308ci? Yamaha RX-V663 or RX-V563? I'd also love to hear from people who have the model or so older too. If I can pick up a non-current model with the same options for cheaper I'd be just as happy.
  22. I’m new to Klipsch speakers and to better stereo as a whole. I say better because from what I’ve seen on this site so far there are Klipsch that cost way more than I’m wanting to pay, but the center I just bought was way more than I wanted to pay… This is the start of something good/bad, depending if you’re my ears or my wallet!!! I’ve searched the forum and found a lot of great answers but now I figure I’ll ask my questions in a post specifically for my situation. There seems to be so many variables with what sounds good with what and I have no idea what goes into picking a receiver based on real quality instead of power ratings and options. My story: The last receiver I bought was in 1990. It was a Sony STR-AV1020...(waiting for the snickers to stop). I really thought I had something back then. I was one of the first receivers I saw that had surround sound and at 250 watts a side max at 4 ohms I thought I had quite a beast. I had a friend at this time I was buying this receiver who was into Klipsch speakers and other high end equipment. He tried his best to explain the concept of quantity vs. quality but I wasn’t listening. I bought the Sony and a pair of big cheap speakers and was on my way. Well I should throw in here I am also tight. If I buy something I want it to last a long time. If I had bought the stuff my friend suggested I’d probably still own it and be happy since the speakers I’ve bought recently were all made around that same era. Well maybe I’ve gotten wiser as I’ve gotten older because this time I want to put together a system that has some quality to it that I can enjoy, not just own for years to come. The old Sony recently stopped working on the right front from time to time so this was the excuse my tight *** needed to get a new receiver! No point in fixing an 18+ year old Sony, that’s for sure. Some how I purchased a set of KG 3.2s. I say somehow because I was going to read up here and figure out exactly what I wanted and plan my system but it didn’t happen. I was thinking in the future I’d use them for my rear channels, but for now I’ll use them as my fronts. I was thinking I’d find a KG 2.2V or something similar for my center but the owner of the near perfect 3.2s I bought also had an Academy that was like brand new. My logic here was someday I’ll have bigger/better front speakers and need a better center so that damn thing ended up following me home a few days later. He used the 3.2s for rears and obviously the Academy as his center. He had a set of Choruses as his fronts but they had some flaws and shipping them would have been too expensive to make it worth while. When I say bigger/better I’m not knocking the 3.2s, I just picture bigger front speakers in my dream system. Maybe I’m wrong to think I need that. OK sorry for the novel, I try to wrap this up. I need suggestions on a new receiver. I want quality but I don’t want to spend a small fortune. $250 to $500 range. I’m not sure if I really want/need 7.1 or better (I saw an 11.2 the other day, where does it end?!?!), I was thinking just a 5.1 since there is so little out there that is actually 7.1 yet I’m not sure if its worth it. So recommendations on 5.1 vs. 7.1, and I want it to be XM ready. Suggestions on where do I go from here with my Klipsch family? Is the Academy a good match for the 3.2’s as fronts? I hope so because I’ve noticed some people suggest getting another set of 3.2’s and use them front and rear which is an option I’m considering. I’ve also got my eye on a set of 4.2’s that are on craigslist but I have not heard back from the seller yet. And I’ve also thought about getting a set of 2.2’s or smaller for the rear since they are smaller and be easier to work into my living room. Yeah I’m all over the map on this. Sub suggestions or advice on picking out a sub to match the system? Is there an order to the way I should be buying my pieces? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I bet years from now I’ll read this post and laugh at myself. Damn newbie!!
  23. Hi, I'm new to the site and am putting together a home theater system. I've only got KG 3.2's so need rears, center and a sub. Any new thoughts on this topic? Since the last post was in 2004, have any new speakers come out that would work better than the suggestions above?
