  1. When I first got the 83's I had them farther like you all said. With the cabinets next to the TV that was too far. Now they are about 7 feet apart, if I put them on the other side of the cabinets they will be 10 feet apart. That seemed a little too far apart.

If they sound/feel too far when they are 10' out, you could turn your 83's inward. Sweet room and setup!

  2. Hi UberChurl,

Welcome to the Forum! $100 is a good price if you are picking them up locally and they are in very good shape. I have two pair of KG 1s in my garage and they get the job done in that setting. I think the 1.5s you're looking at would sound good with your tube amp. However, these smaller bookshelves are all starved for solid, full bass. You could add a sub to cover the low end. If you're moving into a larger room fairly soon, I'd save your $100 and put it toward a larger pair. I'm told Heresys RULE with tube amplification. Good luck!

  3. Very cool vid. I remember going to the Adler Planetarium in Chicago when I was young. There was a program 45 minutes long with similar subject matter: You are here.....here is everything else. At the impressionable age of 10, I left the building thinking, "Why do anything!". It was a very very cool experience. Thanks for the video!

  4. This is straying from downloads a little, but I use Half.com a lot for buying cds. It's a tributary of Ebay, so your username and password can be used in both places. You can find most used cds for $2-5, then $3 for shipping.

Back to MP3s. Their quality is determined by how they were encoded and at what bit rate. If you get the right set up, they can sound very good (relatively speaking). LAME is a good MP3 encoder: http://lame.sourceforge.net/about.php

I have been ok with using the Windows Media Player for making MP3s, and using the Rio Karma 20 gb player:

It's old and discontinued but wonderful. Plays lossless FLAC files if you're into that.

  5. Well, at least it's better then heroin addiction Big Smile.

it never ends does it? LOL!

That is crazy timing you compare speakers with heroin. I was talking to a friend yesterday on how I was thining of trying tube amplification and he said, "if you're going into tubes, there's another thing you might be interested in....heroin". If I get into tubes like I have Klipsch speakers, that's one bottomless money pit! with great sound. HAH!

  6. Even with a center channel, I am not sure I want to paid $700 for them. I paid $800 for my La Scalas (over a year ago) which, IMO, is superior to the Forte II.

I hear ya, neo. It was a pricey decision. Had I been more patient, there would have been a better deal somewhere down the road (at least local). I was on the fence thinking for a few days. It was one of those obsessions - wasn't going to let another set go by. I like the look of oak and walnut, so that pushed me over the edge. La Scalas for $800, huh? Maybe those will be next up for listening.......it never ends does it? LOL!

  7. You got a very nice pair, River! How much did you pay for them? Your pair look just like mine. I wonder what is the main difference between the Forte I and Forte II.

Some may gasp at the price I paid, but I've watched many sets go on by. These looked so good and the seller had good feedback, I decided to go for it. Keep in mind shipping was included, and the Forte II's came with a KV-3 center channel also in oak oil. Purchased on Ebay, $700.

  8. Congratulations! They look good and I bet you get many, many years of enjoyment out of them.

    How do they sound?

    Dennie

The seller did a great job sealing and packing. Very pleased with their look, pillars of power. I'm still playing around with placement. Initially bass was ok, then I started walking around the room and there were pockets of low richness. Gotta find an optimum position. They are very revealing, in a good way. They also seem to not care when getting 40 watts/channel (NAD) or 200 watts/channel (Sunfire) - hard for me to notice a difference. With my RF3 II's there is more of a difference when wattage is increased. One thing I noticed while putzing around behind the Forte IIs, there is a slight buzzing (like a paper ruffling sound) when the passives get moving with loud playing. It seems to be the accordian-like paper in the surrounds of the passives. When I dampen them ever so slighlty with a finger, the buzz goes away. It's not noticable when you stand back and listen. Anyone else notice this with their Forte IIs?

There is a lot more listening to do, but so far I really like these guys!

  9. Congrats! I love mine!

So, what are you driving th em with?

    Frank W.

My receiver/amp selection is in my signature. I'll probably try all three (with and without the Sunfire) to see how they sound with the Forte IIs. I am hoping to purchase an HK 730 from dkalsi. Been wanting to try out older solid state HKs and Marantz (in the 22 series).
