  1. dougdrake,

    Thanks for remembering.Hey,been up

in the attic today looking thru the last eight years of Stereo Review and others and found review of Denon 3300.Also found some ad copy that was interesting for both 3801 &

3300.Can't remember the exact explanation of

the music modes and switching(got to reading

old Klipsch reviews)but the info was promising for my wishes. When I get time will

reread and post what was, I think, what you are referring to.Remember something about the hookup hhmmmm:confused .........Keith

  2. alynmar,

sure to be conflicting opinions here.

I run four KSP300's(and SW12II)in the four corners for music and if you could hear it,

you would no doubt have your answer. My room has three solid walls with the fourth wall open on either end by say 10' and 8'.This vents the sound all over the house.I'm now thinking about adding two to four more speakers to the mix.Sorta straight stereo

    "surround". Go for it! biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

  3. A few weeks ago one of my fine Alabama neighbors and fellow Klipsch lovers asked about an auto power on device for,I believe, a subwoofer. At that time I recommended "the clapper".I have changed my mind.On EBAY under consumer electronics-general-do search

    on NILES.Item # 1217797938.(I would learn how

to insert a link here but I'd rather spend that time moving Klipsch speakers around my living room) Keith

  4. I bought a pair of Magnavox speakers in 1973 and am wondering if anyone(you old heads)has any knowledge as to whether these speakers were in fact manufactured by Magnavox or maybe by someone else for them. They stand about 24"tall,about 16"wide,by 14"deep(don't have them here)and are heavy. They have one 12" woofer and one horn (approx.8"W X 3" H).

They have an adjustment on the rear for highs/lows and that actually works. They are not vented. They have rubber surrounds on the woofer. They have good bass and actually have a good sound. At a glance they appear about the size of a Heresy. All comments appreciated. Thanks,

    Keith

  5. rhawki,

thanks for the input!Talked to a dude

about the Denon today and he said the 3801,in

    Neo:6Music mode,does not completely eliminate

ALL processing but there is no presence of reverb or echo in that 5 speaker mode. Will have to demo when I have more time.Everyone has there own likes and opinions as far as the multi-channel music goes but if room and setup are right and a person prefers straight

stereo sound,I don't see how they could NOT like multi-speaker "stereo".Someday every manufacturer will have 7 channel music modes with full adjustment for each channel. That is

    without the "Rose Bowl,Fish Bowl,And Toilet Bowl"modes.

  6. Eric,

Thank you so much for the post on your Denon. That is exactly the answer that I was searching for at the beginning of this thread.

    Klewless,it is a good thing.

Colin,I headed that direction in 1994.Using SonyES and Acurus amp now.Sounds great in "direct" mode(four corners only).Thinking about the Denon 3801.What I REALLY want is 4 more KSP300's in addition to the 5 I have now.Two in the front L/R corners, two next to

the TV in front, two sides, two rear corners, and one center rear.Sounds ridiculous, that is until you hear it.You know that great 2 channel STEREO sound you get when you find the sweet spot with two speakers?Or how about the thin sound you get with 2 Khorns or LaScalas spread far apart? Then you want a Belle or Heresy for center to "fill-in" the sound? Well, with the above dream system there ain't no sweet spots. If 4 sound this good then heck, 9's got to sound better. My neighbor said today she finally figured out where the music was coming from.

Said she always figured it was a band practicing somewhere. My response was "sounds good, huh?".She said her house probably hasn't

moved over a couple inches off the foundation.Wonder what she'll say when I get the "DREAM" system hooked up? Send all donations to talktoKeith@looneytune.gone

  7. James D McCall,

Got any idea who makes the recievers with the "party mde" you spoke of?

    Erik,

Are you saying your 3300 has 5 channel

stereo with defeatable surround modes, or at least decent sounding modes for music? Seems to me like a simple job of internal switching

would yield the results James spoke of.My present set-up is simply L/R front stereo with signal sent via switch box to rear L/R for music. For HT I switch, via remote, to Dolby which switches on center and surrounds

and I manually cut off the stereo L/R rear at the switch box.I have ES prologic reciever used as preamp with separate amps and the original question was with the idea of upgrading to 3801.Wanted to utilize all speakers without the "I laid a burlap sack over the front of all my speakers" sound.I guess the new question is this: Does the Denon 3801, in Neo:6 Music mode, offer acceptable music sound that is not overprocessed or at least adjustable to the point that you can get acceptable music sound? ALL opinions appreciated. Keith

  8. Boa12,

after re-reading my post i've decided that what I should have said is simply about the same thing you said. The SW12II does have the variable phase switch and it is difficult

to hear a sonic difference with a slight adjustment.I tried the major adjustment (0-180) and could hear a difference. That difference being, in my set-up, tight bass at

0 and el cheapo boomy bass at 180.I also hope

Bob Probert decides to upgrade his sub and sends me a private message offering to sell me his SW12II at a very reasonable price.

    Whattaya think Bob?

    Keith

  9. I've got a new pair of KSPS6's sitting here

beside me in the floor in the way. They are

next to an extra KSP300 and a couple KG5.5's

that I moved in here today. Those old DCM TimeFrames under the bed need to be moved too.Wish me and ColaBear could find someone to help get this stuff outta our way.

  10. boa12,

well Bob said it didn't seem to make any difference to him.Back in '95 when I bought my SW12II I experimented with the phase switch and the only difference I could

tell, on music, was at 180 the bass (for lack

of a better way to explain) seemed to arrive

late or maybe you could say maybe not as "fast"? Anyway left the switch at 180 and

several days later, after having forgot to change setting back to 0,listened to music for a while and got the impression that the sound was somewhat confusing or maybe slightly dizzing sounding or like I had a hangover or something.Hard to explain.Anyway

changed switch back to 0 and gave up drinking

and haven't changed it since.WARNING: This is

not SCIENTIFIC evidence.Hope this helps answer your question boa.Oh yea, kidding about

    the drinking part.

  11. erik, I will pass on the valuable information

that was posted here by someone, like myself,

that had been there.Run speaker wire to any location in your room where you think there may ever be a possibility that you may want to put speakers. You could draw yourself a map

for future reference for the locations of your pre-wire.I just bought Monster Cable IW

16/4 at Home Depot for .55 ft to run in my

    "prewired" home.

    Keith

  12. Am I the only person alive that prefers the straight, unprocessed, unechoeey, reverbeey sound when listening to music? And has anyone

ever noticed that when you are listening to your music you notice that there is a beautiful wall of sound emanating from in front of you and maybe have you thought that if those two speakers sound that good, why don't I get 6 more speakers and a couple of powerful Acurus amplifiers and spread them around the room and have that beautiful unprocessed sound surrounding me and sounding

as if I were sitting right smack dab in the middle of the jam session tapping my toe and enjoying the hech out of it.Boy, bet it would

sound good.Has anyone ever thought of that?

  13. dougdrake,

thanks for the info.Have you tried

this 5 channel stereo on your Denon?I know you also prefer the "direct" or unprocessed

sound. If so, what did you think?I'm beginning

to think that my current set-up is exactly what I need.Guess that's why I've got it.I simply wanted to send a stereo signal to multiple speaker pairs and have the option to

switch to HT use easily.I've yet to hear a preprogrammed mode that I like for music.

Now I think I'll just add a few more speakers

and another amp or two.Hmmmm, maybe 200 WPC.

  14. forte,go to your nearest Tweeter store and tell them you would like a double handfull of

Phoenix Gold dual banana plugs. They will cost

you about $5 apiece. After installing on speaker wire, insert into back of binding post.If the banana is not snug in plug, use a

razor cutter blade or some other thin device to GENTLY pry the plug ends open to achieve a tighter fit. You'll have a large contact surface and ease of use.Enjoy!

  15. Who the heck said anything about night and day differences?I DO NOT have a degree but I do have two good ears.I am not going to tell anyone what they hear and I don't give a sh-t

about anyones technobabble.I will tell you some things that I DO believe have improved the sound of my set-up and I would recommend anyone try for themselves.None of them made a

large audible difference in my setup,if any at all.But collectively, they do.I thought everyone learned these right after learning to tie their shoes:

    Speakers on spikes.

    Line level improves dynamics.

Too little power is worse than too much.

Good interconnects improve sound over the

    cheapies included with most components.

Good speaker wire/better than lamp cord.

    Speaker placement is important/experiment.

    Subwoofer-corner.

    Sub/speaker with amplifier-float ground.

All electronics are not sonically transparent

Dead is good when speaking of room acoustics.

Wife likes surprise gift & pat on a#s

    occasionally.

My 6 year old KG5.5 speaker cabs are as tight

    as a young girls a*s.

Klipsch speakers are the best VALUE on the

    market.

I'm sure there's more, but got to go to work.
