  1. Thanks Thebes!! Best wishes to your sister.!!
  2. you could get a jolida jd100a on audiogon for $450 ... i think there might be one there...they are tube, high reviews and really sound sweet at a great price! keep as is or send off for mods and it'll sound better than $3000 cd players
  3. call brent ...really nice knowledgeable man at audiotubes.com tell him your problem and he'll give expert advice and recommendations with no pressures to buy
  4. Yes! Bass, mids, treble, tonality, soundstage all significantly better. Now that I've heard these I could never buy anything else besides G.E.C. KT 88s.You are right they are rare and expensive but i bought a used (80% life left) quad for a decent price ($340) and i have 5 yrs on them and they're just now starting to weaken a little... i've tried chinese and russian, not EH or tung sol reissue,,,i'd like to hear the ValveArts I've heard good things about them...i've used current production and could never get even close to that much time out of them so i just think i pay a little more, but they sound way better to me... and in the long run since they are so strong i actually probably save a little over current production which wear out sooner...just my opinion as i know people like other tubes and i respect that...
  5. i have heard the gold lion reissues and they sound very good!! i'd love to hear the tung sol reissues to compare... has anyone out their heard the reissue tung sols and also heard the originals...if so how do they compare? do you find the tung sols sound better with certain styles of music (i.e. big band or blues vs. rock or music with scooped mids)
  6. to me and the style of music ( big band, blues, jazz) i listen nothing comes close except the G.E.C. KT88s i hear so many more things in the music i don't hear with other tubes how do you think the valvearts compare what kind of music do you listen to
  7. thats exactly what i did and it really rules! wish i knew this years ago
  8. Anyone have a good source for used/test good original Tung Sol 6550 Black Plates or G.E.C. KT 88s other than Ebay?
  9. thanks to all for your best wishes! you guys are a good bunch!!
  10. if you had a wife given 3 years to live with terminal brain and just last week she was diagnosed with breast cancer, you know i have little humor in my life... my deepest apologies to you Joe and to all for blowing your party...
  11. theres a guy selling a velodyne sub for 150 in the garage forum
  12. look at my comment on this subject in the 2channel section might help
  13. i don't even know you Joe, but I stood up for you for choosing to be different.... but as this has gone on i must clarify that my idea of different isn't coming to a forum and bad mouthing products that the aforementioned forum members embrace... if thats what you're doing, get a life and go somewhere... where people want to hear what you have to say... if your soul feeds on antagonizing good people you need to take a serious look in the mirror at your karma... if it's not what you're doing then set the record straight!!!
  14. My Conrad Johnson preamp has 2 outputs. I ran one output to my tube amp to run my mains. And I ran the subs off the 2nd preamp output but it didn't sound very good despite multiple adjustments. I had a Harman Kardon solid state receiver laying around collecting dust. It has pre-outs, main ins and sub outs. I remember how much better my subs sounded with solid state, remembering of course how tube rocks for everything else. This is how it ended up, one preamp output went to mains and other to solid state receiver. Conclusion. Solid state receiver as a preamp for the subs produced a much tighter, focused and articulate sub sound. It was a great improvement from when i ran the subs off the 2nd preamp output. At least in my case it did. Plus I can use the remote from the receiver to adjust sub volume from across the room. Just an idea if you have a solid state receiver laying around collecting dust.
  15. "Now, the Star-Belly Sneetches / Had bellies with stars. / The Plain-Belly Sneetches / Had none upon thars." What has become of us? Have we sunk so low as to allow the Star-Belly Sneeches to coexist with the Plain-Belly Sneetches?
  16. This is how it ended up with my tube preamp having 2 outputs, one went to mains and other to solid state receiver. Conclusion. Bass is much tighter and focused with overall sub sound greatly improved from when i ran the subs off the 2nd preamp output. Solid state produced better bass sound over tube. At least in my case it did. Now am I playing with the devil with this setup by not putting a load on the receiver by not using the speaker channels? Advice appreciated.
  17. i did try adjusting the low pass filter, no joy...thank you for your input and for taking time out of your day to give it[Y]
  18. currently: output # 1 from preamp goes to tube amp for mains output # 2 to subs suggested: output # 1 from preamp goes to tube amp for mains output # 2 to SS receiver AUX input, subs connect to SS receiver subouts, SS receiver controls only subs just thinking out loud especially since subs sound so much better with SS
  19. My preamp has 2 outputs. I use one output to my tube amp to run my mains. I can run subs off the 2nd preamp output but it doesn't sound very good despite multiple adjustments with frequencies, etc. I have a Harman Kardon solid state receiver laying around collecting dust. It has pre-outs, main ins and sub outs. Could I run a signal from the preamps 2nd output to the receiver, connect the subs to the receiver and use the receiver solely to run the subs., which would also give me the ability to use a remote control to adjust their level not to mention better sub sound with the solid state. I remember how much better my subs sounded with solid state, but tube rocks for everything else. Please don't call the men in the white coats, just thinking out loud and would appreciate constructive, cordial feedback.
