  1. looks like no ones in the headfone usa here . i must have posted in the wrong place
  2. guys , im using a fostex t20 rp headfones, they are awesome . very nice sound. they do require an amp. as i feel some shyness of loudness and punch when playing it with a laptop or the sound card audigy2 . though 96 db isnt bad but i now feel they should be used with an amp. so i used an old marantz 2230 .it has headfones socket on the front .and a sweet sound . i wanna know if the wattage of the amp for loudspeakers is usually known (30 watts in this amps case). if i used a 100 watts amp or a 300 watts amp, for headfones , would there be any difference ??? do i need a bigger amp to go louder with these headfones.????? i do know that the headfone socket is barely giving only a feww hundred milliwatts /milli volts ,to go to ear blowing levels through a 100 db headfones , generally used by youngsters and gamers . i use it for music purely. i remember the guy who was selling it to me had me auditioned it on the yamaha 130 watts amp. which he said was notorious for its sonic characteristics and harshness. and cranked up the volume to pretty loud level. and these fostese handled that pretty well, without discomfort to my ears .
  3. guys , SORRY ABOUT DOUBLE post , im using a fostex t20 rp headfones, they are awesome . very nice sound. they do require an amp. as i feel some shyness of loudness and punch when playing it with a laptop or the sound card audigy2 . though 96 db isnt bad but i now feel they should be used with an amp. so i used an old marantz 2230 .it has headfones socket on the front .and a sweet sound . i wanna know if the wattage of the amp for loudspeakers is usually known (30 watts in this amps case). if i used a 100 watts amp or a 300 watts amp, for headfones , would there be any difference ??? do i need a bigger amp to go louder with these headfones.????? i do know that the headfone socket is barely giving only a feww hundred milliwatts /milli volts ,to go to ear blowing levels through a 100 db headfones , generally used by youngsters and gamers . i use it for music purely. i remember the guy who was selling it to me had me auditioned it on the yamaha 130 watts amp. which he said was notorious for its sonic characteristics and harshness. and cranked up the volume to pretty loud level. and these fostese handled that pretty well, without discomfort to my ears .
  4. if quartets are better than rf3s , no offence taken, i love the fact that the oldies still beat the newbies .i wonder why the old stuff was still unbeaten by the reference line . point no.2 , if quartets cannot be better than 3s in movies , i dont think it hurts me, coz i know iv never used the 3s to their full potential .perhaps not even to half as loud as their full power handling. so im sure quartets would also be fine .
  5. guys. if a subwoofer is added to play with a pair of floorstanders that are rated to go as low as 37 db at 100db. would this sub add 3-6 dbs more to the already low going woofers of the towers.how does a sub improve the bass if most of the frequencies that are in a music are reproducable by the floorstanders themselves too ???? usually 50 to 90 hz....
  6. willland, how much different are the fortes from those quartets of yours soundwise . moray james has been guiding me to get the quartets as these both share the same mid/high frequency drivers . the difference being in woofers and cabinets . the prices for the two differ much more . so do you think quartets should be bought if not fortes ?or should i just live with my RF3s . would quartts be better than RF-3s.both music and movies
  7. wow. amazing stuff . dennie youve given me eyes again. id sure look t up in the market . coz i know this kindda stuf , i mean equalizers are commonly seen lying around collecting duct but something that does room acoustics through its built in mic ,i may get lucky if i find something like this .thanks a lot.
  8. I think it is definitely worth trying to see if you like it better (not everyone does). If the transition from three to four wires happens where the cable connects to the plug, the change is easy. I converted my 35 year old Sennheiser HD424X to balanced about a year ago and never looked back. how to do it . can you tell me how to make this wiring happen , maybe with the help of a simplified diagram
  9. Dear easyontheears, im glad to learn from your reply that you live in edinburgh and work in audio related business. that should flow in a multitude of systems to audition . you may be getting a lot more oppertunities to check out various british systems than i do . well for me the quad rules big time . i had a number of systems before, but ever since i purchased it ,im settled with its superb sound.it may benefit from an upgrade of parts but im reluctant. everyone here tells me to get it restored to latest components , capacitors and plugs and sockets. but i donot find the energy to do it since it is working very nicely so far . my other amp that i must mention ,the MUSICAL FIDELITY A1 , is class A amp. and is superior sounding in the highs department . and also that it has a very transparent sound . i never found flaw in quad303 , 33preamp. until i heard this M.F-A1 amp.which is more cleaner . quad felt as though a slight mist was on its sound . a thin cotton veil covering the sound perhaps. but thats perhaps coz its pretty old and never been modified . and all the components are in their original condition. maybe if id just muster up energy to upgrade parts for the quad , id be able to to kick some musical fidelity butt! the lows of quad are better . the mids are where quad rules . . but the mf beats it somewhat in the highs which are very velvety sweet, never harsh.the quad gets harsh at higher volumes , but thats where any amp would be getting pushed .and its just 45 watts. i also loved it the moment i saw it , coz of its robust tank like built and looks . the pre amp though is a hideous one .lolz. but i can forgive it. hehe. it just sounds that good. google the other amps , especially the da-a7 mitsubishi diatone . and see for yourself what a mammoth that was and quad 303 ran over it without a sweat!!! did your dad like the cornwalls better than the rf7s ?????? ill be visiting edinburgh if i get my visa , just like your wife ,hehe. i have an exam to take . and then after that ill be free like a hawk. ill try to visit all audio markets. and see the audio world in england. adios .stay posted . its good to have you on forum. stay posted .
  10. someone quoted elsewhere that it is easy for a headphone to outperform a loudspeaker that costs in thousands of dollars. no wonder room acoustics have a pleasant or a terrible bearing on what you hear from your set of speakers. also i must mention i read in a magazine that the designer of krell , DAN AGOSTINO uses a pair of headfones and not speakers to test his amps . []
  11. anyone facing a similar frustration please chime in... i was listening to a new released album by yanni. the song "ECHO OF A DREAM" , the bass notes were so rhythmic and flowy and thrilling to my senses through my old FOSTEX RP20 headsets that i couldnt resist playing the song over and over again. finally connected the pc soundcard audigy 2 output to my amp, the musical fidelity A1 , and sat in my sweet spot but i never got that bass feel.and the detail of the lows . does that happen with you guys too. is this a demerit of loudspeakers . is it headphones supremacy all the way ????
  12. 2230...!!!!!! rocks !!!!! i own it . listening to it right now. and i love it . very solid. very beautiful sound. it rocks . 30 watts is not 30 watts .
  13. dear EOTE, i had a quad 303 coupled to my RF3s . they sounded very nice . solid and neutral. with a touch of warmth and there was absolutely no background noise . this amp was far superior to others in its class that i compared to. but after experimentation i realised that it is 70 % pre amp that makes up the shape of the sound that you hear and 30 or 20 % its the role of the amp. i used the same quad 303 amp and paired it to a luxman 505, a marantz 2230, a mitsubishi DA-P7. and all the time the sound change was pertaining to the pre amp feeding the quad 303. but nevertheless , its a great amp. and i suppose 909 would be even better . more power is always better , if the first watts are beautiful. thats my opinion .
  14. clermentcop. i owned this amp a couple of months ago . perhaps 77 days ago. lost it to a guy who took away saying hed pay back . he never did. a friend told me he was auditioning it . he told me to check it online and see the looks . i totally drooled over it . purchased it . using its preamp. correction ...mine was a DA-A7 and DA-P7. 75 watter . i ran a couple of cds and the sound was kinda thin to my ears . not a bassy gear . not that it was losing detail. that it did aplenty. it was just so thrill less and tinny at times compared to my marantz 2230 in my not so good room. but i coupled its power amp to my other pre amps and it did the job of a great power house running the RF3s . and banging the walls aplenty, whenever demanded. i ultimately had it out for a switching button service and its headfone socket cleanup. but there the guy hunted it off me . and robbed me . sorry that was my story . people using it on this forum with the heritage lineup will tell you that these mitsu amps are SLEEPERS . thats what i got as a comment from em. but never got to understand what did that mean . heck , anyways ....now you tell me whats a sleeper amp. and how does this gear sound in your setting ??????
  15. jrod... russ has had them all and then some . hence hes bound to say so.but to me these marantzies are a keeper for their meagre costs . you cant believe the price i paid for em.. but the sheer pleasure they brought me,startled me big time .. i wouldnt mind spending on their repair . but thats coz the repairs here are pretty cheap and so are these gear . just that these vintages are hard to find . almost a rarity here. with klipsch sensitivity, who cares if its 15 watts or a hundred .
  16. yup they are pioneer SLH-5 . they belong to the pioneer higher end series im not sure if they really belong to the TAD league but yes theres no harm in saying so. they sound superior. only if they were higher sensitivity , i would have kept em for life . they are more neutral than my RF3s . just that they demand a better bigger amp. im letting them go to my cousin.
  17. the idea here is that many amps are rated at 100 watts , but we dont easily get to know what kindda current our amps are capable of delivering at the speaker ends .... the dts amps and 5.1 amps sold here usually are rated at 100 watts and beyond, but they deliver poor bass with RF7s . i have tested em quite a number of times and yes the bass isnt satisfying at all .[:'(] the bass gets better with other brands, like infinity , jbl, etc . or maybe its the audible perception only.
  18. a pair of fortes shipment charges between hope arkansas and lahore pakistan , can anyone guess?
  19. JRKPILOT, welcome to the forum ..... as i learnt from a previous post , when i asked the same question ,i gathered that it wont be cool ........, as perhaps that amp will focus on a tiny bandwith particularly the frequencies around the guitar sound ..... the amp wont have the wide range necessary to produce the oomph of bass neither the higher frequencies to relish . it will sound bland .
