  1. Nice... good work dean.

Lets us know what you think wolfbane.

Indeed I will. Bob's A/4500 XO's replaced the original AB units and restored the original sound. Theses AA's have the reputation to bring up the detail, warmth and musicality a good step up from stock. I plan to install just one unit at 1st and compare the two XO types before installing the second XO.

May have to find a labeling machine before I do the install though.

  2. You wire them just like the networks you just removed.

If I used a 10 point barrier strip, you do not connect anything to the last two connectors on the far left. So then:

    | Blank | Blank | T+ | T - | M + | M - | W + | W - | Input + | Input - |

Back in the early days, I didn't use labels, because I was naive enough to think that everyone knew how to hook up a Klipsch crossover. :-)

Thanks Dean. As to anything involving wiring I know just enough about the subject to screw it up. Sometimes badly.

  3. The old adage, just when you think you've seen it all...

If you are like me and have been married a couple decades you know what I'm talking about. Wives never cease to amaze.

I was sitting at the table reading some posts and was looking at some Khorns. My wife walks by, takes a peek and says " those look nice, who is selling them?" She didn't realize they were speakers. She thought they were (in her words - lovely cabinets). Told her what they were and showed some other photos. She likes them because of the corner placements and looks and dosent mind if I get a pair!

Wow. I showed her LaScalas and the Belles which I thought she would like. Nope...too fat, meaning wide.

Just about fell off my chair. Of all the speakers she would like, the biggest most monstrous powerhouse out there.

So now the search begins. Young guys, never assume you know anything about women; After 28 years I still get blown away.

Perhaps she's  been planning on removing you from the scene and is thankful that you found some large, coffin large boxes to assist her with her mad plan? :)

  4. Picked up a pair of Type AA XO's from another Forum member's ad here on the Garage Sale forum. Now I need to replace the Crites A/4500 with the new to me AA's. The terminals on the new AA's are not labeled like the original Klipsch XO's units or BEC's as shown here:

    https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/159267-jensen-capped-aa-networks/

I don't want to wire these incorrectly so my question is which terminals are for the inputs, the tweeters, mid range and bass speakers?

    TIA,

    Wb

  5.

Incremental improvement? Put the 77's back in

Price is right as I believe I kept them. Finding where I stuck them will be the challenge if I decide to compare tweeters when I swap out the Crites XO's.

Using the A/4500 will put your K77 diaphragms at risk.  The AA's built by Dean you have on the way don't have zener diodes,  putting your K77 diaphragms as risk as well, however, this may only be relevant if you plan on running a more powerful amp than your Type 45.

My winter tube amp runs a pair of NOS RCA 211 power tubes and is rated at about 18 WPC. I suspect these, at 1/2 volume even Beethoven and ALK can hear these a block away when attached to my Belles and rocking.

  6.

Who wants to take a stab at re-writing the Wikipedia article?

Wow, what a great idea.  Some of your guys have irreplaceable knowledge and although some of that can be found on the Forums, putting all that info in one place is a great idea.

I glanced at the Wiki page.  It is sparsely written and is out of date.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klipsch_Audio_Technologies

And you're right, Gary.  That comment (discussion actually) on "honkyness" needs to go.  <_<

Would you care to start a new thread so people who can update the Wiki article can coordinate and collaborate?

Maybe not. When things go off the tracks at Wiki it can end with pistols at dawn.

  7. See https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/151762-timing-measurements/page-5#entry1914019

Note that this trick works the same for a Belle as it does for a La Scala.

The CT125s are good - but they have a little less output (SPL) as the K-77s, so your highs will be slightly attenuated.  You can partially compensate by using equalization to bring up the highs a bit.  Recommend running Room EQ Wizard (REW) running on a laptop with a calibration microphone to help you rebalance the Belles--by taking in-room measurements.

    Chris

Thanks. But I should probably add... no suggestions that if implemented end with me being rolled into a cold, dark 6'X3' hole in the backyard on the next moonless night.

  8. So far, I've changed the tweeters on my 1981 Belles, replaced the tweeters with Crites CT-125's, replaced the original AB Crossovers (1st with Bob's A/4500 XO's) and now have a pair of Dean G built AA XO's I scored from the Garage Sale forum here on the way.

I've also upgraded all the tubes in my Type 45 (2.5 Watt) Amp.

Logically, where do I go from here for the Belles? Replace the stock mid's with ? or?

Need to be affordable (my budget will be ~$500 or less).

  9. Shipped? If so I'll take them.

cash talks, and BS walks :)

Indeed. Sadly the CDN Peso's I had to convert to USD to pay for these are in the doldrums along with the rocks, logs and crude oil we produce.

Well my Belles will love them even if the woman that keeps me here does not.

  10. Sorry gang but I 'stole a march' on all of you by waiting and watching for some Dean AA's that I could afford just like a spider. It's been two years but I pounced on these when they were 1st posted yesterday afternoon!

Rest assured they will have a good home.

  11. Actually the Chinese and Russian are pretty good at making tube gear. When the transitor age came in, most developed countries abandon tubes. China and Russia kept tubes in some of their military equipment in case of a nuclear war, their equipment would still function and not be knocked out by the EM pluse. Some of the gear from China can be purchased from a dealer in Canada. This way warranty issues are not a problem and shipping is cheaper. For me, I did not know if I would like tube gear and did not care to spend a lot of money. I am confident that I can resale the amp for slightly more than I paid for it. The Music Angel and Yaqin amps are beautiful and to my ears, excellent SQ. I am easy to please.

Yes, quite simply that is all I was saying.

My first tube amp predates my Klipsch Cornwalls and now Belles and was Grant Fidelity's inexpensive KT88/EL34 integrated. I subsequently replaced the Grant Fidelity integrated with Opera Consonance 211/222 Monoblocks which put out around 18 WPC. Since then, I've added a couple of Japanese Amps and really like the combination of my 2 WPC 45 SET Amp (Yamamoto A-08S) and the Belles.

With efficient Klipsch speakers I certainly don't need more than 2 WPC unless I'm listening to classic rock. You can find Grant Fidelity here which will give you the brands they carry, specs and prices: http://grantfidelity.com/site/

If I was just getting into tubes today I would not change the route I followed before.

  12. Hi all, would like some thoughts on what you think would be a better match with K-horns or would either one be good. Is one brighter than the other? And what is a good price to pay for one? Don't know much about either one, other than power ratings and what i have researched on the web. Thanks

I've owned both the G9000 and a factory 110V version of the G901 (same specs as the G9000) both sounded good with my Cornwalls. Not bright or sweet more neutral sounding.

I have since sold the G9000 and have a lower power tube amp in place of the Sansui's as they have too much power to not want to turn them up which equates to a low WAF here.

  13. There is a document I just read which shows results of various testers based on a 12ax7 tube. It seemed that the 600a was the most consistent performer across the many 600a units tested, and accuracy to the lab tester results (RCA WT100A). I found it facsinating that the 539 didn't fair well at all. Not only were there large inconsistencies between the 10 Hicock 539's tested, the mean micromhos was way off from that of the RCA lab unit.

This makes me question readings people advertise on ebay for used tubes. The 539C results are regularly quoted in those auctions, and based on this document, they are inflated! I would much rather hear what a 600 or 6000 has to say about a tube!

Go read this article. See if you come to the same conclusion. http://www.jogis-roehrenbude.de/Roehren-Geschichtliches/Roe-Pruefer/Hickock-539B/testing.pdf

edit: fjd, I was typing when you posted. This post was in no way a slam on the 539's. Go look at the document and tell me what you think.

I own a couple of the RCA WT100A Lab grade testers, have used the Amplitrex AT1000 to test 1,000's of tubes (it''s great for testing VT4B&C tubes) and several other smaller tube testers. I would go for a calibrated Triplett 3444 if I had to choose just one tester. The Amplitrex AT1000 Achilles heal is that if you want to use with your PC 5 years from now it will require new software to be compatible with Windows 10. The RCA WT100A Lab grade testers are unsurpassed if you want to test lots of 1 tube type sequentially.

The $2600+ cost of the Amplitrex tester is relatively cheap when you consider that an RCA WT100A price in today's money would cost almost $9,000 new.

  14. So here is my current line up. I only listen to FLAC files through my media server...at the moment.

    Computer - Logitech Duet - Bushmaster TC-7530DC DAC - Fisher 500c - Cornscalas

I suspect my current DAC of not being the best option in my setup. I think I would benefit from a Tube DAC in that position.

Does anyone have any experience with the Jolida FX Tube DAC III? I like the idea of running it through 12ax7 tubes. I have a pair of Telefunken tubes I would love to demo on one of those on my system.

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks

I own both the Grant Fidelity DAC09 ( in one system) and their DAC11 in another. I've been very happy with both and either provide all kinds of options for tube rolling. The DAC09 uses the 5670/396A tube and the DAC11 an EC88/6922.6DJ8 tube. The DAC11 is their current tube DAC while DAC09's come up for sale infrequently and they get snapped up quickly too.

  15. I'm currently building 2-way cornscalas and have some ALK ES500 networks. Does anyone have any ideas on the power I am likely going to need to power them? I live in a small English house and will not be able to crank it up like some. Is there a way to calculate insertion loss?

    Paul

My 2 WPC 45 Tube Amp could easily drive my 98.5dB Cornwalls to a reasonably loud, when I wanted it, level.

  16. You probably already know this, but just in case you don't -- that horn is designed to be used with 2" exit drivers. If you go that route, you can use the crossovers, but they will have to be modified. The new horn/driver combination will be much louder for the same amount of wattage (compared to what you have now). Most are attenuating between 12 and 13.5dB with the big drivers (the stock mid is attenuated 3dB). When you get to that point, send me your crossovers -- I'll modify them for you free of charge (you'll have to cover shipping though).

Thanks for the offer. I suspect that it will be sometime in the 1st half of next year if I decide to go for the Volti horns.

  17. I've figured out where I'm going with my Belles.

Step 1 install Crites CT-125 tweeters listen and compare one Belle speaker to the other using one of my tube amps with balance controls.

Step 2 install Crites A/4500 crossovers and then compare them using the process above.

Step 3 save some cash to upgrade the mids and then look at upgrading these with the Volti horns per the attached link: Belle V-Trac Horns - Klipsch Upgrades by Volti Audio - Speaker Restoration.

I suspect that the crossover replacement should make a big improvement over the 30 year old AB crossovers that these speakers arrived with.

I'm not certain if the Volti horns will work properly with the Crites crossover though.
