  1. Many Questions. I went with what I could fit in the room and what looks best. Then I used the Automatic Room Optimizer (ARO) to "band-aid" my placement. I got the Book that those guys at Harman put out ( http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Reproduction-Acoustics-Psychoacoustics-Loudspeakers/dp/0240520092/ ) It might help answer your questions. I went back and forth about mashing my Khorns and Lascalas together for a "Mega" home theater. In the end I am sticking with Left Center and Right Lascalas because placement is easier AND I can use one crossover frequnecy of 80hz. Maybe someone else will chime in?

  2. Bill,

Do you have any links to the 'pair of subs' papers you mentioned?

My room isn't really optimized for a HT system as we have a big open living room that connects to the kitchen. But when we build our next house I am going to design a HT room. I only have one JL f113 and can't wait to get another one. It is seriously a world class sub.

http://www.harman.com/EN-US/OurCompany/Technologyleadership/Pages/WhitePapers.aspx?CategoryID=White%20papers the sub article is from 2002, the is a good amount of information on the link. JBL is my second favorite speaker company.. too bad their Project Everest are $$$$$!
  3. couple of quick replies. tragusa3, I love your setup! I always admire it, as it so close to what I have AND you have the AT screen.

I'll be working with a finished room. I have kept the Klipschorns separate from the Hometheater because it's not easy to integrate their design and capability with the rest of the Hometheater. I'd have to have a separate crossover frequency for the Klipschorns and I would need two good corners.

Right now from all your great suggestions I am leaning towards a Acoustically Transparent screen AND the current LCD Sony WITH 3 LaScalas. I am of course I will keep the subwoofers. The Klipschorns would go in another room, potentally the next most popular room in the house. For 5.1 surrounds, I would go for another Lascala pair. I know a few that can be had for not too much. Still I think the Heresey would work better for 7.1, by not taking up all the space in the room. PLUS I could wall/ in-wall/ in acoustic treament mount the.. oh decisions :-)

  4. Yes. That's a much better written explanation, but I still feel that one should stick with Apple and Apple Lossless Audio. No company can integrate the music better with your lifestyle.. Meridian Sooloos is second and Sonos is third.

Did you look for a music albums on Amazon (used) and compare the prices to iTunes Music Store? Also Rip a CD in Apple Lossless AND rip it in 128kbps AAC then compare which sounds acceptable enough for your ears.

  5. Built in Lascala

    Belle Center

    My Current setup

Picture note: The first two are other "found on the internet" system setups the last one is mine.

Okay so I want a Projector, I am moving to a new place, and I have Klipschorns and LaScalas. What is the best way to integrate my speakers? Build in? Free standing?

I also received Floyd Toole's book on audio (http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Reproduction-Acoustics-Psychoacoustics-Loudspeakers/dp/0240520092) which is a great collection of why things are in audio and what must be overcome in Audio reproduction. Even touches a bit on room design. So I am a bit charged up in getting a listening/ home theater room..

I like the clean look of bulid in -especially behind an acoustically transparent screen. However, it's costly. Free standing is much simpler (less $$$) and can look cool too. I am willing to make false corners for the Klipschorns. I am also going to allocate some resources for acoustic room treatment, audio rack and some good seating.

    Any ideas?

  6. Okay... I finally broke down and bought an portable player, and 32gb iPod touch. I am going to be running my Klipsch Image ones with this thing... are there any setting I can use or anything I can do to the downloads to make the sound better? faster/deeper sample rate? save files as? anything at all?

    thanks

Use only imported CDs encoded in Apple lossless via iTunes. OR Download only 16 bit/44khz audio. That means no content from the iTunes Music Store. I recommend amazon.com's used CD section. CDs for a dollar and shipping for 2 is a lot less that a 9.99 iTunes downloaded albums in less than ideal 256Kbps. Don't waste your money on docks to play music to your audio system. Apple sells the airport express that has an optical cable connection to connect to your receiver. Using Apple AirTunes you can control and play all your Music with the iPod touch and Apple Airport Express. i know this sounds like an apple ad but it's the best solution out there.

I just noticed you are only using headphones.. So disregard the dock part.

  7. Thanks for the feedback Bill. I noticed you have a couple of JL Audio subs listed. How do they blend with the La Scalas? Did the optimizer on your Yamaha receiver help? (YPAO right?)

I was assuming I might need a sub with the La Scalas, based on their not so low freq reach but hadn't really considered two. How did you set them up?

Yes, Have them set to "Small" which is crossovered at 80 hz. The JL Audio f113 is a "World class" subwoofer. I went function over design ( sealed ), since that's my opinion on all things audio. I also think that I need 2 subwoofers for better bass. Google "pair of subwoofers" and read all the JBL and Harman white papers in the the subject. I love music and movies- what I have really delivers in mid to large rooms. for small I would say Heresy all around and dual Klipsch THX subs or JL Audio Subs.
  8. Hi Folks, I hope everybody's holiday season is going well. I'm a new member to the forum but have been a casual/occasional reader for probably a couple of years now. I just haven't been able to get serious about my home audio stuff until recently.

So...I'm about to start a major tear-up of my currently awful HT setup & could use some feedback from the forum. Specifically, I'm close to pulling the trigger on new front speakers. My goal is for a system that provides great home theater performance but also great 2-channel rock-n-roll performance, including high volume. And it needs to be flexible relative to room size because I'm renting my house but intend to buy if/when the market settles down a little. That said, I'm leaning toward 2 scenarios:

    A. (3) La Scala II's LCR + (2) KG 5.2 Rears

    or

    B. (3) Cornwall III's LCR + 2 KG5.2 Rears

I'm using a Yamaha HTR-6090, (120W/ch, 0.04% THD) which I also plan on updating later this year if necessary. The current room size is ~15x18, plus a few feet on the length for fireplace and bookshelf/window seat on opposite short ends. It has roughly 20' of full length curtains in the room that should help deaden it a little too. Seating & presentation are on the long walls.

Anybody have a similar setup today?

If so, do you find that you still need a sub? Also, has anybody had succes with mixing the CWIII & LSII speakers in their LCR package, like (2) CwIII Fronts + 1 LSII Center? I'd really like a center with a form factor more like the RC-64 but I really don't think it would match well unless KLipsch would be willing to build something custom.

yes, I have a similar setup. Lascalas have about 2 ft of depth, so they take up more space than the Cornwall. & You save money vs Lascalas. Lascalas are truly a "Premiun" speaker. Don't sweat the amplifier since everything works great with all Klipsch speakers. My preference is to get a pair of Klipschorns with a Cornwall or Lascala center. For surrounds stick with a few Heresy speakers.
  9. Ha! I have a similar Cerwing Vega Subwoofer. The EL-63 "earthquake". Since I was nuts about Home theater, I purchased some JL audio subwoofers and the Cerwin Vegas are in storage.. JL audio subs have deeper bass, but cannot pressurize the air in the room like the Cerwin Vega Sub does above 40 Cycles/ sec. More to the point, I like all the tech involved with making 2 channel into a surround effect. virtual speaker is good. I have a TV with SRS Trusurround and it works well with in its constraints. ( constraints= small speakers and only 2) If you are rationalizing no going for more than two speakers, having some of the best "stereo" speakers is the best way to compromise. Still, in the end i went with 7.1 and 2.0. I like having them both, a lot! It all comes down to; It has to work for you and your house-hold.

  10. I believe this is partially why using less transducers (say 2-way vs 3-way) can be beneficial towards acheiving a more cohesive sound

Given my lack of technical prowess, I gotta put my vote here with Who. I was attributing the cohesive sound of the Jubilee's to their being signal aligned. It was Ben who wacked me over the head and said it was because they were 2-way. Furthermore, he suggested I dinker around with the delay to see if I could tell a difference.

Though I could certainly add enough delay to create distinct echos once I got back in the ballpark for echo to go away (still not aligned as per Roy's numbers) they still had that cohesiveness that I noticed.

I'd say the lions share of improvement comes from dropping a crossover point and then you get incremental gains by the signal alignment.

I'll admit it kind of has me intrigued with those single driver speakers... (not enough to get rid of anything)

Okay has anyone figured the cost of this mondifaction?

I think that is the biggest limiting factor. I say that none of us has the staff and test capability that Klipsch or any good speaker company has. In the spirit of modification, sure it's cool. But falls short on true deliverables and really is all in the mind of the owner.

Spend money on music or even another set of speakers *cough single driver/ coaxial* that are true time aligned designs.

  11. Tells me all the cash spent in tweaks is best spent on music. :-)

Actually, this says that the Khorn has driver delay mismatches that really do need to be corrected.

P.S. What is the year count on this design?

I'm not sure if you are asking about the Khorn design, the article publish date, or the results of the test by Rigma, et al. The article was published in November 1986 and is probably the most famous review written on the Khorn. Richard Heyser was a pioneer in the use of waterfall FFT diagrams and other testing techniques. His untimely death was a great loss to the profession.

    Chris

Point 1 , I think you're right. Is the juice worth the squeeze? ~$$$$ in modifications, yeah I'm sticking with the stock design. This translates well to cars.

Point 2 , I was referring to the original klipschorn design.

Also,Canyonman, room size.. Someting with the golden ratio. 1:1.618 with the smallest dimension > ~10''

  12. Before you spend $400 or more replacing the speaker components.....

I recommend replacing the capacitors in the Xovers.

Also, what kind of floors are in the room? (Room treatments; curtains and rugs; can make a night and day difference).....

I am not sure about your amp; but there are other receivers and amps that are known for sounding "warmer"; like Marantz and HK.

Finally; consider using an EQ to remove a bit off the edges......

(My receiver has a built in EQ for each channel).......

    Good Luck!

    EQ +1
  13. The difference in arrival time between the woofer and tweeter is 8.4 - 3.7 = 4.7mS. Therefore, the tweeter sound should be delayed by 4.7mS. Essentially, it is stored in the electronics of the Crown waiting for the woofer sound to arrive at the front of the cabinet.

    Gil,

I was doing a Google search and found this thread. Note that, for the record, the 8.4ms delay is between the woofer and the tweeter, not the delay between the signal and receiving microphone.

The delay between the midrange and the tweeter is 1.674ms.

Sorry for updating this old thread, but this is just in case someone else finds this like I did using Google. I was actually looking for the Heyser article on the Klipschorn: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/3/1037187/Richard%20C%20Heyser%20KHorn%20Review.pdf

    Chris

no, no, this was a good resurrection. It re-enforces that PWK Klipschorn design is solid. Tells me all the cash spent in tweaks is best spent on music. :-) P.S. What is the year count on this design?

  14. JL owner here. I'm not sure if you are aware of the PC13. The cylinder version. Might save on space. If you find a JL dealer they are more than willing to work with you. They did for me. Also I don't think you understand the level or caliber of these subs. The design shouldn't be the issue, ported or sealed, the performance should. These both are over achievers. I didn't pick Klipschorns because they were horns.. They just sound amazing! - bill

  15. OK, curiosity has gotten the best of me. Please be more specific or elaborate on what you mean by "transparent sound". Tks!

My guess that is joke based on the transparent base this turntable is contructed with:

    6%20Perspex.jpg

I don't have any personal experience with this, but a quick "google" of the net showed some pretty good reviews of this unit. My guess is that if you found one for a good price, it may indeed be worth grabbing up.

I heard this turn table with some B&W 803 and some McIntosh electronics. Listened to Dark Side of the Moon I don't even remember flipping the record over, I was totally involved. Listened to a original yard sale find of Hotel California and it sounded great too. I compared it with the McIntosh Turntable since the store "Staple", VPI Classic was recently sold out. I couldn't tell the difference, but I didn't do a blind test..

    .

This is a seriously great turntable. Too bad the not enough pro reviews out there.

  16. I would also would like to "pig pile" on this thread.

I am moving and of course like any Klipschorn owner I look for rooms, in potential houses, that are suitable for placement. What I find is it is rare to come across two adjacent corners with room for the required space* for Klipschorns.. *4' X 4' cube or 2' extending to either side of the Klipschorns

Is there an official "False Corners Owners" thread? With Pictures and in depth instructions? I haven't found one yet. Other than what the Klipschorn page has

  17. Good morning everyone.

FIRST, I want to thank TheFactor - OdysseyRevolver - Iron Save and ooBilloo for your very nice comments on the music room and theatre projects, really makes it worth it if only in pictures... seeing and hearing in person is nicer, wish you lived closer! Smile

Jackson Bart. I think you are still sad that there were NO explosions or fire with the first startup of the Dynaco MKIII's ........always the jokester for sure Wink

Bill, how about some photos from your K'horn setup with the MKlll's ??

I LOVE the sound this combo makes AND, I will get some close up photos of the pre-amp for you.

Nice on the Project TT. I picked up a MusicHall 5.1 (has the Project tone arm as you know) you probably noticed in my signature. This has caused me to enjoy once again my old LP collection AND to search out new releases. Its a fun ride! Next project for the two channel setup is a nice old Teac R to R which has the two separate preamps and logic controls. I have a new collection of pre-records I have been stock piling from eBay winnings, some NEVER played!! THEN, that Pioneer Elite multi player yet to be added.

    Behind the curtain you ask.....?

Well, a basic 7.1 Onkyo unit (90w per.......plenty for the small theater) and a trusty old Velodyne F1500R which provides a nice quality low end for critical listening in stereo or SACD , and just enough output for movies at SAFE listening levels. There is also an early stand alone SACD player by Phillips (7955A) along with the usual compliment of 3 front speakers. ALL hidden behind a quality black velure curtain for which the remote controls STILL work which amazes me Big Smile NO led displays/pilot lights are seen to distract the viewer/listener along with ZERO outside light during daylight hour entertainment.

Thanks again guys. Perhaps I will get photos of just the elements of the theater.

    All best,

    Gary

    Tigerman,

I will provide photos, because of my job I am moving, when the dust settles I will have something to show.

I claim Massachusetts since that is where I was born and raised. I frequent "Home" often. I would gladly like to meet up and listen.

Here is what is left, since the rest is packed up.
