  1. Thanks for bringing this up. My Onkyo has both a sub and LFE output. So I'll have to pick up another sub to try the LFE/SUB pre out at the same time. At the moment using bose 901 as mains so they can use the help till I find a deal on some horns. Back to the owners manual.
  2. Well the quick update is my friend has agreed to deliver the La Scala to the house when we move them into town. I'll be able to go through them and ensure all the components are in working order. Probably order some caps to get the cross overs back in order. Hope no drivers are bad. The wife is going to freak but after she hears this not sure what she will say.
  3. Not a build plan but this is pretty cool idea. Amazing. http://www.audioheritage.org/images/jbl/extracts/section.jpg Ooo and more pictures please. Neat project. Thanks for sharing.
  4. Agreed. The 901's are for sure going on the block soon. Been looking at Craigs list at least twice a week for more heresy or any other heritage speakers that need some help. Will still have an issue with R&L surrounds as the furniture arrangement floor standing speakers are not going to work. Need a wall mountable low profile speaker in that position. Of course good ones cost an arm and a leg. Or cut a shelf into the wall for another set of heresy. Edit: Looks like I'll loose some money as the high price for used VI 901 is around 600 bucks. Oh well.
  5. Well a couple of weeks ago found some matching numbers WO Heresy vintage '82. Good nick other than some water spots and seems the covers are not factory. Has the emblems. For lack of a better place to put them they are in the rear (for the moment). I did get the power amp but that is so I can run the EQ on the 901. The comparison is striking. The 901's must have the sub to really dig deep. Using all channel stereo there is a comparable difference between the two sets. Oh and they both blow the 301 out of the water so I'm completely mis matched. Looking to change that.
  6. Well if you can get them at a reasonable price the top seems to be the easy part of the speaker build. Plus you have the opportunity to load it with whatever components you like. I'm assuming there is just a bass bin so youll have to source the crossovers too. Good luck.
  7. I'm still having issues with it locking in on digital. When it is there is a -27dB compensation. No HDMI options on my gear, was purchased just before HDMI became commonplace, used the optical from day one. What is interesting is the nr801 may be less likely to switch back and forth once it's hot. So it may be time for an upgrade on my side. Still trying to avoid this at present. Meanwhile playing the movies/music/games through the setup its DD and has the proper signal compensation around -4dB. So the gear is able to make the change just seems dependent on the source. Going to mess with it today and get it warmed up with a couple of CD and swap back and forth between the PS3 and the DVR... See how well it works... Going to file a TT today to keep the heat on.
  8. I always though the loudness button was an EQ boost to use when not listening at high SPL. Of course this also didn't limit folks from going further and placing EQ to isolate and broadcast only the low range. The cars driving by the house with their body panels rattling comes to mind. At the moment my best system is in my car (stock system). I like the fact there is no loudness button and a decent tone control instead. Set a decent curve for your ears and usually never change it. As always thanks for your in site guys.
  9. There are a couple of long threads about the issue on the Uverse forum... It goes back to pretty much the beginning of their roll out 2008 or so. Since I had not messed with anything but a 2.1 setup we would just reset the amp and it would come back. So now I have the optical as the primary and the analog hookups present it will shift from analog to digital in the middle of a show. It happens the most on the HD channels. Most of the regular channels are also DD challenged. Other than this I'm happy with the service and DVR features. Just a bummer to record a concert to have it switch between analog and digital through out the show. BTW this is one of the things to show your tech next time... Get something recorded using the surround settings active on the DVR and let him hear and see this in person. The 311 show on HDnet did to me this weekend. Sad because in DD it sounded rich and full. Once it shifted to analog a blanket was thrown over the sounds. Not to mention the volume difference.
  10. Well after some more reading on the Uverse forum this looks to be a issues from their side... I'm not the only one with issues passing audio through the optical connection for a 5.1 format let alone the HDMI sounds to only pass 2.0.... The work around suggested is optical bypass of the HDMI is still not viable as they seem to admit there is a FW upgrade pending in August. Once I placed the RCA on it there has been no drops when changing channels but the volume differences are significant between the HD and regular programs. The PC3 it's even louder looks happy connecting via digital.
  11. Just recently started really setting up the surrounds on this receiver. I have changed the Motorola to send "surround" as I see it through the optical port to the receiver. All is usually good until someone "wife" starts flipping from station to station. It seems the signal settings aren't compatible and requires a restart to establish the proper signal. I know this is an old receiver and an HDMI option would probably solve this. I'd like to keep this unit in service for a bit longer. There is not much for option son the DVR/Set top box. I'm pretty sure it's how the receiver is processing it (or not). Are there any base line settings (Onkyo) I have to place for this to be stable through the receiver? We have zero issues with the PS3 seemingly regardless of the signal options placed. Any guidance would be appreciated. The Onkyo manual is not that intuitive. Posting this here as you guys seem to get your hands on all kinds of HW and thus issues.
  12. I'm not going to pressure him to sell, already asked for him to think of a price. I am going to offer a hand diagnosing them though, just to see if it's simple or needs a cap replacement kit, drivers, who knows at this point. Need a couple of welders serviced. May as well trade services. I'll learn some more in the process. I may get a reprieve from the warden the rest of the weekend. Might get over there sooner than later.
  13. Ok now I'm hooked. Visions of Klipschorn (F), Belle (S), La Scala ®, Dual Heresy © with a sub in the rear dancing in my head.
  14. Yeah there are other challanges involved as well with the 901 as I'll need a seperate amp to drive them (with my receiver) to use the EQ they say is a must. Good point aboout the center. I'm already scheming a Klipshorn DIY build. I have two sets of speakers for my fender bassman cab. May be able to use the spare 15" speakers on this project... Well see. You have elluded to somthing I was thinking about and that is angling the LS into the listening area. Now you have me thinking about dualing subwoofers. No for the amp I'l like to stay with Onkyo but will take any advice you can offer on a clean amp. Meaning your looking for a low distortion rating at max db? I was eyeballing a couple of these at the moment. One for the Main. One for the rear. Run the Sub and surrounds L/R through the receiver. http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=M-282&class=Amplifier&p=i
  15. Getting ready to update from 2.1 to 5.1. Looking for advice on next steps. My current list of gear includes the following. Onkyo TX-NR801 Bose 901 Bose 301 Polk Audio PSW350 powerd sub. Planning to pick up a pair of La Scala. Need a center channel speaker My thoughts are the following and hope I can get some advice. I understand your all Klipsh centeric but budget limitates make my next step crucial. The plan as it stands is to use the La Scala as the new mains and connect them with a seperate power amp. Question is how big should the amp be? The 901 as I see it would be good for the surround or rear. Same goes for the 301 could be either surround or rear. Question is what position would be best for these two. The 901 could also handle more power and will probably mate another power amp for this as well. If I keep them for the system. This leads to a good matching center for the La Scala? I only have 8" on the bottom shelf of my TV stand. Would like to place it inside the stand as opposed to floor in front of the stand. The room is a rough one as it's L shaped with 12' ceiling. Living toom is one side and dining room is the other. Windows and furniture pretty much force all speakers to floor standing. Planning to rack mount most of the components on the wall. PS3 Center speaker and a couple of other components will live in the TV stand. Should I be worried about vibration with a DLP projection TV? Any advice would be appriciated.
  16. I'm in the valley near the S.F. bay area. Battling with the wife to accept that I'm going to buy these speakers with our without her blessing. I told her she my not like the look but will not complain once it's shaking her booty. Did some more reading on the current gear I have and how to make these work in 5.1 surround system. Looks like I need to buy a couple more amps to satisfy the 901 and La Scala off of my preamp outs on my Onkyo TX-NR801. The only additional speaker I need to complete is the center. On the fence if I should sell the 901 or keep thim in play.
  17. No sound at all comming from either speaker cab is what I recall. Both AA crosovers are present. Were definitly run hard and put away wet many times with an under powered amp. Only thing I can do at this point is get them over here and start testing the components. He's a mechanic by trade. So I'm sure at minimum he tested the amp was sending signal to another set of speakers. Swapped channels ect. But that's probably it. I'll keep you guys up to date. Thanks.
  18. At this point they arn't working but otherwise in good structural shape...This is the main reason I'm on the fence about offering price. If ythey workes I'd just probably see if he'd take $500. I have not gone through any further diagnosis as to why just yet they are not working. Main thing I'm looking for is a good fair stab it the dark if you came across a similar deal. How much would you offer? I'll search around for component rebuild replacment costs... any suggestions would be greatly appriciated though. As stated the cab condition looks great, Signature and SN Tag are not even faded. Open grain looks like birch should just need a good oil job from what I can tell. Grill material is in good shape as well. Thanks
  19. I have a friend with a pair of La Scala and may be willing to part with them. They have been sitting not working for almost 10 years. He's moving in the comming months and will likely not have room for them.Cabs in good shape. The SN on one is 19T605 and from what I've read that's 1979. Am I correct on the vintage? The Cross overs are AA. The previous owner admitted buying them for $500 bucks in the 80s. Used to mow the lawn with one kicked to the door to hear the tunes. I remember when they worked and was really impressed. I don't want to rip of my good friend, so would $300 bucks be fair due to the fact I will have to figure out what's blown out? Hoping these to replace my Bose 901 as left and right channels on my home theather setup. Thanks
