  1. I'm going to update my system to surround, but i want to use my current amp if I can. I've got an Adcom 545 MkII with Klipsch KG5.2s that I am running through a Yamaha RX 770 receiver with pre-outs as the preamp--I'm sure some of you stereo aficianados are retching in disgust, but isn't it great I want to upgrade? Anyway, I'm looking at a Adcom GSA 700 surround-preamp-tuner on eBay that would add a center and two rear channels to replace the Yamaha. Would I need another surround component? Would I be able to run all 5 speakers with just the GFA 545 and the GSA 700? Thank you for your input!!
  2. The speakers will be about 13 feet apart, with stairs between them. The length comes from going up and down walls and around the staircase. This way they face the sofa at the right angles--I'll also have ceiling speakers above the corners of the sofa-- I'll use the 10 % rule of thumb--- Thanks
  3. I just got an Adcom GFA 545II amp on eBay for $217.51, and it has improved my system dramatically. My KG5.2s are transformed! Clarity, depth, and soundstage are excellent-- I've got a question, though-- We are building a new home, and the best speaker positions for the sound room will require that one speaker's wiring will require more than 40 feet of wire, and the other will be right next to the system, so there will be a big difference in the wiring runs. I've already wired the long run, and I've used the thickest and most expensive wire I could afford. But, is there going to be a problem with one speaker using 3 feet of wire and the other with over 40 feet of wire? Should I add alot more to the short run? Will fidelity be affected?
  4. Quick question---I'm taking a poll--- Which of these solid state amplifiers sound warm and wonderful with Klipsch classic speakers--? (KG52s in the 100 watt range) Rotel Adcom B&K NAD ---or is there one great 100 watt amp that would make them sound great--for less than $400 (I'm shopping used, too) Any input would be appreciated---
  5. Relief is close---- I go to Sound Advice often because of their big Klipsches and listening rooms-They are all over Florida--Just tell the wife you had to go get some more sunscreen and leave the family to the sand in all their crevices. When you're in Tampa, go to the International Plaza where you'll find a B & O store next to an A/V store complete with $30k TVs and sound sytems to go with them-- Make sure you wear a loud hawaiian shirt with a camera around your neck and a trace of zinc oxide on your nose--us natives like the entertainment tourists provide--- Have fun down here---go to Mallory Square in Key west if you can---very memorable!!
  6. They were black lacquer cabinets with black plastic/cloth grills-- I just stripped and refinished the cabinets with stain and polyurethane so now they are a cross between mahogany and walnut color-- The grills are somewhat scraped up and I want to clean them up somehow--can you use polurethane, or some thing else to give them a nice finish? I'd like to keep them black---
  7. I just refinished my KG5.2s-- How about the black plastic grills? If I taped them up perfectly, what would be the best finish to use on the plastic? They are quite scratched up, and now that the speakers are done, the grills just don't cut it---
  8. I compared alot of amps at a local stereo place here in Tampa--Sound Advice, and I thought B&K sounded great with the Klipsches they had-- Would 100 watts be enough? Or the 140 watt? The Yamaha enables me to turn off both speakers with the A/B speaker switch, and it does have "Direct" which bypasses most circuitry for a cleaner sound. I don't know if that's propaganda or not--I don't hear much difference when I've got the KGs hooked up to it-- Would a B&K preamp make a huge difference? or another brand preamp?
  9. I put on semi-gloss instead of satin. It is shinier, but it gives alot of character to the darker wood. I had to match a big armoire the system will be in anyway. Its good to hear about the polyurethane--its so clear and so smooth---All the Minwax literature says that it "ambers" after awhile--in your experience-is that a good thing? It enhances the look? these speakers just finished drying---
  10. I finally got the nerve to refinish my black KG5.2s, and after reading some great posts here about it, I dove in---Screwed up once, restripped and refinished them, but now they look fabulous--so much better than the cheap finish that was on them-- The biggest problems were: 1)Getting my wife to let me use the dining room table to put the finish on (white carpet!!), and 2)getting out of Home Depot without buying the whole paint aisle-- If you just take your time and put on thin (as opposed to thick) coats of stain and finish--it turns out great-- I had black lacquer over oak cabinets, and as it has been said on this forum, lacquer thinner is by far the easiest way to get that lacquer off--I tried strippers and they are messy and not as effective-- I can't recommend buying a power sander enough. I tried it without one the first time, but you can't get the wood smooth enough with just sandpaper. I got a RYOBI Corner CAT for $25, and it makes that wood smooth as a baby's... a real professional look-- I took light oak cabinets and stained them with 5 treatments of Gel Stain and Wood Finish (Minwax) to get them to look almost like walnut--you've got to use the Pre-Stain Conditioner before you put on the stain--its worth it. Polyurethane finish goes on easy and flattens out beautifully-- It was so much fun I'm looking for something else to re-finish---Naaaah!!
  11. How's my thinking on this--- I'm building a new home, and I'm putting in good speaker cables for my KG5.2s and ceiling speakers in the same room, and also for outdoor speakers in the back of the house. I want to run the outside and ceiling speakers off a Yamaha RX770 receiver(2x85 watts) and get an ADCOM, NAD, or B&K power amp for the KG5.2s---probably 100 watts. The Yamaha has pre-out/main-in jacks for the power amp, so it would serve as the preamp. I'm a cheap audiophile, but I want it to sound great---- Will this work? Any suggestions for the amp, because that's what I need to buy--
  12. Thanks for responding Either a preamp with or without a tuner--depending on the deal! I'd only listen to PBS baroque on Sundays for a tuner, so its not that necessary. You can't do surround with a GFA 555, can you? I want to use it for music and theater---I may still just use the two KG5.2s front and two back speakers in the ceiling. I saw an adcom preamp and tuner on eBay very cheap, but it doesn't read AC3 - what does that mean? I appreciate the help--
  13. What a helluva site! I'm going to refinish my KG5.2s after reading how to here-- I'm probably going to get a Adcom GFA 555 amp for them, and I don't know what to look for in preamps-- Should I get a new model or can I get a solid used one by Adcom or comparable brand? What are good 2-channel amps? for less than $500?
  14. I push my kg5.2 with an 85wattx2 Yamaha receiver. It sounds great but i yearn for more power. I've got my eye on a 250x2 Yamaha. Would that be too much for these speakers? How can I get specs for these speakers? I bought them as demos and never received specs for them-------
