    what was the most memorable?

    That'd be a toss-up between:

-Type O Negative / Queensrÿche where I started the lighter tribute during "Silent Lucidity." Had no idea who Type O was at the time, but liked their sound.

-Hootie & the Blowfish playing the 4th of July in St. Louis 2006. Just a great night all around. Excellent weather, kick *** performance, and a seriously fantastic fireworks show.

Thanks to Tom (quiethollow) for pushing me in this direction and answering my questions.

    You're welcome Carl. :emotion-22:

A ride cymbal or high hat being playing on top of a walking bass line is one of the most audible examples of that.  Almost all analog recordings can be immediately identified by listening to the cymbals.

Until a successor to USB is chosen for digital audio that doesn't have the same clocking/lack of handshaking issue as S/PDIF (including TOSLINK), I'd recommend staying with HDMI.

That, or just stick with what works better in the first place. The problem is that USB audio is/was a significant step backwards for audio applications. It wasn't designed for it. If companies simply stated that up-front, many buyers would be much better off.

    What are the better products?

Any of the older Panasonic HU's sporting Tripath hardware. I have a CQ-C9901U in my car and it is no joke. Even today, very few can touch it. Amazing SQ and power on tap.

What module do you have installed on your C390DD?  HDMI?  Phono?

Just stock at the moment. I've yet to pony up for an HDMI module, which it will definitely need. Phono? I've got the Pioneer for that.

The BluOS module might look promising at first glimpse, but in the end, it doesn't make much sense. Especially without DLNA and not to mention the price they're asking. Otherwise a great piece of hardware, rendered useless by poor software.

  5. Most frequently asked question on many forums:

What is the best XXXXXX ?

Well, I ask why does it always have to be the "best"? What defines "best"? What / why does it matter? Seems to be a guy thing too.

Very nice.  Please let us know your thoughts.  I have heard great things about this piece.

Hey, that is not a receiver.:o:P

    Bill

I certainly will, when I get some better speakers for it. :blush2:  Got something very interesting in the works at the moment.

As far as not being a receiver.....well, I've still got the Pioneer SC-87 and Panasonic SA-XR57 if we're going to be technical about that. :D  I like them, so I keep 'em, just like Derrick. All three have their unique strengths, and all three can be made to sound absolutely delicious.

  7. Definitely.

Where Stranger Things struck gold was in the details....as in ALL of them, at once. There's a synergy to film that occurs when everything (cast, storytelling, photography, location, props, sound design) all comes together on point. All the right ingredients in just the right proportions.

Creative lockstep. The smoking gun is a flick with some serious replay value.

Another recent film that knocked it out of the park in that regard was Straight Out Of Compton.

  8. Ok...ok....

Didn't believe I was giving out that much info. :blush2:

I edited my original post, but still can't help the part about looking something up before hand.

With all the buzz, there's spoilers seemingly everywhere.

Seems it's a moot point and not needed if using digital coax or optical.  I'm thinking my little box will do the trick.

    ^This.

Asynchronous hardware is a patch to make a serial interface, not originally intended for streaming, to work.

Can it? Yes, but at the end of the day you'll have spent more money and fuss attempting to wring-out the sound quality of a USB connection. It's simply a matter of re-inventing the wheel. Arguably, USB is convenient until you check your wallet in pursuit of the better sound.

The highly lucrative market for clockers didn't exist until manufactures started slapping USB ports on everything audio.:emotion-55:

So what is interesting is that for very low frequency sounds, the 4.1 ms delay is negligible, especially since low frequencies take more wavelengths to be discriminated in the first place, and you can't determine pitch from a quarter or half wavelength, actually you have to hear quite a few cycles to get it, the lower the frequency the more cycles it takes to determine.

So the lower percent portion that is the 4.1 ms delay (potential advantage) is buried in how long it takes hear something down there anyway.

Testers often focus on the audibility of specific delay, but that's only half the problem. The other half is the resultant shift in power. Line up all the impulses correctly in time, and the difference is not only audible, but also very tactile. The energy in the sound climbs rapidly as frequency decreases.

  11. Here's a view most folks wouldn't normally see . It's my pair of HIP deployed as rear surrounds, as viewed from the television (the front wall HT arrangement can be viewed in my profile). It may be hard to tell from the photo, but they're each about ~9 feet from the center of the couch (which itself is spaced 3 feet from the rear wall), raised to ~2 feet above ear-level, toe'd inward 45 degrees , and tilted 10 degrees down.

The left surround (right side as viewed) is sitting on top of our Tuba HT subwoofer.

It might look unflattering at first glance, but very few surround speakers can dance toe-to-toe with the LaScala at war volume. Yet, the HIP simply loaf along requiring only 2.5 dB of trim over the front pair and throw an exceptionally realistic/engaging surround field. They have tricked us on several occasions.

  13. Seems like they don't ever go on sale through Amazon...
Sure they do, but they don't wave a flag when it happens.

I bought the SC-87 for $1200, back when it was still fetching $2000. Amazon dropped the price for three days, no notice, and that was it.

$700 off, then prices bounced right back up to MSRP until just recently when subsequent models took over the market share.

Got to check in frequently, that's all. :emotion-22:
