  1. Well, It has been a little while since I started on trying to build up a working pair of Klipschorns. They are not there yet but progress had been mad. Yesterday was a nice spring like day here so after a couple days of reorganizing and cleaning I got the klipscorn bass bins outside to get a coat of lacquer on them. I had them stored as a stack to save floor space, I will admit that the bass bin seems to have gotten a wee bit heavier over the last few years. I had to bring it down in stages. The trip out side was uneventful
  2. needed to do some disassembly to get the rear strut brace installed - the list is what needs to get done before the dash goes in Got to keep on the move with this so another 5 years doesn't slip by...
  3. Mostly dressed in, still a half a dozen things to do before the dash goes in I had a busy couple of days to get the chassis done far enough to get it slipped under
  4. I have been at this particular project for about 5 years, they can be done in a year with a lot of time and money but this S4 is being put together with what is at hand or does not cost a lot. This Elan body I was offered by a friend for $200 and needed close to 75 days to put it into prime. I had known the car for 25 years so I knew a bit of the history and a lot of background so I was not going in blind. Anyhow this covid issue came along and well, I had just the thing to do to keep myself occupied since the middle of last month. Still lots to do when we come off of covid "stay at home" time. I started on the "rats nest", the dashboard is a homemade piece and is only temped inplace to get he wiring harness dressed in place. some of the parts that are going into the dash are not ready so for now it lays on the tunnel. Harness through the firewall with fuse box and solenoid - moving dolly and a milk crate hold the body up
  5. I been cleaning and found these tapes. there are the 6 new in the wrapper and one opened. There are a few blank reels also. $120 plus postage from the Boston area Gary
  6. In 2010, I built these clones from a craigslist buy of 12 and 15 mm Baltic birch. I laminated a number of sheets, sides, top, bottom back were all 12mm and a 15mm sheet. The doghouse (sides and roof), and hatch were a double 12mm. The motorboard was 3/4. It was a fair amount of work to laminate all off the panels but I think I paid $10 a sheet and then needed 4 or 5 gallons of Titebond II to do the job. I would guess that the empty cabinet is 160 lbs.
  7. I kind of figured that someone had been here before, Its been almost 45 years since I had a pair of JBL L19 speakers in the back seat of 1969 Fury and they did sound good back in the day.
  8. Just trying them for size - need to hook them up and listen they just seem to disappear
  9. For now I am going to rig a cardboard flap to cover the display, hopefully I can get the rest to work to my standards Thanks it all for the suggestions.
  10. So - the salt and sand are off the road and the RMV opened on Wednesday after a 2 day shutdown due to the corona thing. I got my NEW to me 1996 F350 extended cab on the road now. I started to play with the radio (Dual BT) and seems to be missing the LF channel and the faceplate display is a blinding blue at night, Its very distracting, especially the rolling billboard display that wont stop. When I put the clock feature on the screen it cycles between time and rolling display. What a piece of trash. I was thinking of replacing the unit with something, but being clueless and old I just thought I would ask what new radio units folks here liked. I did a search and found a "10 best", from this I have figured that I have a 1 DIN unit but I really don't understand much else of what was written. All of the units seem to have a volume knob and a bunch of small buttons (with even smaller letters) that may or may not do what you think they might. The nail in the coffin was set when I tried out the blue tooth phone hook up (we got a new hands free law at the beginning of March). The ring volume nearly blew me away and when I answered my brother in law couldn't hear me so I had to pull over and shut the truck off to talk. Maybe some have been through this and have a bit to offer on this subject. Thanks Gary
  11. Hi Dave I like the BB plywood, I use it when it make sense to do so. I happed to buy this sheet to help a friend with rebuilding of an English sports car. I cut the patterns he gave me and I had most of the sheet left over. The recite is what I bought 3 years ago, the picture is what it left now. Gary
  12. I am not sure about country of origin, but I cut up the sheet pretty well and it was the only issue with that particular sheet.
  13. Well, no one has mentioned voids. I had not seen them before in Baltic birch plywood until January when I was making a cover for the Bogen DB20 and there it was. This is the only void in the sheet that I saw, but I guess stuff happens Gary
  14. The amp cover ended up with a very good color. another New cab mounts to the chassis
  15. Not done yet! There are some problems with the tape residue, Oh well - I'll have to check for that next time. Its does have a nice color after a few coats of lacquer
  16. There are a few of those "that's not what I meant to do" moments but I think it will work. Needs finish...
  17. I got to thinking about a cover and this is what the results are after a day of procrastinating and another cutting, fitting, more cutting and fitting with some measuring and drilling tossed in. At about 4 pm I finally got myself out of clamps
  18. A couple more Got to fill the hole with the speaker jack
  19. I did a bit more cleaning, lots of small changes, tone circuit disabled (for the moment), holds filled, more changes under, cleaner, more voltage, need to get some speaker jacks, I have been enjoying it since yesterday.
  20. Got some 22uf electrolytic caps yesterday for the amp yesterday and spent a bit more time cleaning up the unused parts that I didn't need or some that were grossly out of spec. The cathode resistor for the two 6V6's measured 170 ohm where it was supposed to be 220 ohm so out it came. A 33k measured 37k in the voltage divider section and was borderline but it came out too. Once I got the electrolytic caps installed I plugged in the 8 ohm woofer and turned on the switch, wonder of wonders - no smoke and the voltage peak on startup was right around 395 vdc and quickly settled down to 328 volts. Plate voltage on the 6V6's was 320v and the screens were 325v with the cathode right at 19.5 volts DC. There was a bit of noise at times through the speaker (pops and other extraneous sounds) but there was nothing connected to the amp and I just had the power on with the volume all the way down. I had it powered on for about 20 minutes and every thing seemed quite stable. I guess its time to finish the preamp section. I am quite happy with this street find, it's going to make a nice amp... Gary 2-28-2020 07:30 I got to play with the amp for a bit and it still needs work, the preamp section seems too noisy so I'll spend some more time with it. I had built a pair of cabs out of an old set of draws that my friend had tossed out (the carcass didn't survive the 12 foot drop so well but the draws were mostly ok) , the draws themselves were a very nice white clear poplar and bottoms were good mahogany plywood. All I had to do was find the grill cloth (in the attic out of an old Magnavox hifi) and bolt in the speaker out of the Silvertone to have something to test the amp with.
  21. To install a new novell nine pin socket I had to enlarge one of the original holes. Its a pain to do sometimes but this time I was able to remove the plate and clamp a backing piece, mark the location, drill a pilot hole for the 7/8 inch holesaw and make the hole so I could use the original holes that the rivets were installed in. much of the rest was removed and the heater wires re-routed to the new socket. more later when I know more - like if the power transformer is any good Gary
  22. Hi Randy The pictures are not the cab, what I got is too far gone - the heresy cabs were cream puffs compared to this one. I am guessing it had been on craigslist and not sold so it was put out on the street for trash collection. Unfortunately I don't have the room for the cab so it has ben knocked down and I'll likely use the better plywood parts to build another guitar amp cabinet. The power cord was removed and an IEC electrical jack installed where the two power receptacles were with a fuse holder in place of where the power cord was. Much of the radio tuning parts removed and more will be gone later today when I get back to it. It had 11 tubes when I got it and when I am done it will be down to the 5U4 rectifier, the two 6V6's power tubes, the Silvertone phase splitter 12AX7 and Silvertone 6AV6 preamp tube. If I don't have enough gain, I switch the 6AV6 for another 12A*7. I'll update this topic as I go. I was going to put this in "what I got today" but that seems more of a what I bought today type of thing and this was to be more of road kill topic. I wish I could keep everything I find as original but that is just not the case, my entry hall has two consoles, its 8 by 10 and is filled up . Gary Lots of stuff removed that I didn't need I got rid of some of brown turds too
  23. I had an appointment last Thursday morning and as I pulled out of a side street I noticed on my left a box like structure with metal grills sitting on the curb between the side walk and street. This is not the console, just an internet photo from https://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=234002 which is pretty much what I saw as I drove by except there were no feet. I thought I was running behind schedule so I just glanced at it briefly one more time as I was driving by and thought "I'll stop on the way back and have a look". So two hours later I was heading back pulled up to said "box" and I still was not sure what I was looking at and stopped, got out, walked around the back of the box and saw a 5U4 tube and a pair of smaller octal (6v6's) tubes. I dropped the tailgate on the pickup and went back and dragged it over to load, it was not very tall (about half a foot below the tailgate) so I picked up one end and angled it at about 45 degrees and the back corner of the HiFi just reached the tailgate and slid the unit into the bed. I got home and unloaded the console and read the label on the back, which read Silvertone 7061 (in Mahogany), the top was deeply plant stained and it had sat outside for sometime as the sides had the finish lifting, the cabinet most like could have been brought back but it would have been a lot of work and I didn't have the room. https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/sears_roeb_silvertone_7061_52846200_mahogany.html so I ended up with this The 5U4 and 6v6's are Realistic branded made in Japan but the rest are the original (from 1957) Silvertone labeled tubes. It is supposed to be about 10 watts, it will make a nice guitar amp even with that big honking power transformer... Gary As brought home, not that ugly really but not the project I wanted to get involved with.
  24. Some times everything goes right and sometimes not. I had an OOPs when I drilled the risers and used the original risers as a template, must have been in a hurry. I had the risers upside down and had I to re-drill 6 of the 8 mounting holes in the two risers. Might be a do-over coming, but not likely too soon. I took this picture this morning, the sun was up and I shut the flash off. lots of light but must be in the wrong place.
