  1. I have to agree, No seperates? His theater and house are amazing. Like wow! I guess your house would have to be huge to have a theater room like that though. With a game room and wet bar and lobby. And risers that were designed into the room. If I had that room I would retire and never leave home. Watch movies. Play games. Play music. That room would be my second home. Wifey would never see me, lol. But maybe the receiver is temporary?
  2. Yeah I would get the Denon (1st) the Onkyo (2nd) and if you can't get either one of those then the Yamaha (3rd) I've never really been impressed with Yamaha either and I'm partial to Audessey (Onkyo, Denon) because it has always done an outstanding job setting up my rooms (with the exception of the subs. I always have to turn the balance up on the sub) I have an Onkyo 507 and my parents have a Onkyo 606. We're both driving Klipsch and the sound isn't overly bright. Also as far as reliability I haven't had any problems with Onkyo and my parents haven't either. Mine has been going strong for awhile now. Gets used daily and has logged over 3300 hours so far (according to the built in counter) so I have definitely gotten my value out of it in my opinion. I'm about to upgrade to the Onkyo 808 but only because I want more power to drive my Klipsch plus THX certified doesn't sound half bad either. My 507 will go in another room. I think all 3 brands are going to have a few lemons. I guess my circle has been lucky because even the people I know with Denons and Yamaha's haven't had any problems. And of course the ones with Onkyo haven't either. Just my humble opinion.
  3. That's funny I noticed the same thing when the Cornwall lll's were new, break in probably only takes a few minutes or hours but it's probably our ears adjusting to a new sound more than anything. That was just a guess, I have no clue really, but they did sound different somehow ? Even my wife noticed it, she was the first to say something about it. Well if even your wife noticed it then there has to be something then. Its good to know I'm not imagining things. I guess thats why a lot of people strongly believe in break in. I still don't know what to call it. On AVS some folks even stated that the woofers don't need break in but the titanium tweeter does. That is the part that settled down but like you said it could be our ears adjusting since the tweeter is one of the most noticable things. Either way it sounds better.
  4. Yes I understand. You're probably hearing the extra bass or the extra ooomph from your fronts picking up more of the bass duty from the sub (since the crossover is set lower at 60hz) but at 80hz they are pretty much only handling the midbass and upper end of the spectrum which explains the warmer sound. My 61s didn't sound quite as good at 60hz even though they can handle those frequencies. You speakers do have 8" woofers tho. With that being said if you ever do decide to upgrade the fronts make sure you do extended listening. I like the "new" klipsch sound but owners of the reference line that you have generally dislike the sound bc it isn't as "In you face" me personally I haven't heard the RB-5s or anything from that series so I can't comment either way....but I mean you really can't get much better as far as bookshelf speakers go. Keep your fronts! lol. ( I have to upgrade bc the speakers I am replacing are Sony's and HTiB speakers, LOL) Yes I know....bad excuse.
  5. Haha classic statement. Normally when I'm not sure I try to hide stuff and ease it on her but I guess there's no hiding that beast, lol. She's been pretty accepting so far....even though the prices of the equipment gets her going at times. (you spent how much on that? do you need it? The other one sounded fine) but thats just a part of it. When we actually get married hopefully she won't become stricter.
  6. Lol yes I know its big. Because the people that are on youtube showing it off have set it up next to other subs that I thought were big...and the SVS makes them look like a small HTiB sub. Plus its delivered on a pallet right? The thing that worried me was not the size but the weight. Its over 100lbs but I'm the type of guy that likes to try to setup stuff on his own. Hooking everything up, adjusting the picture, experimenting with speaker placement to get the best sound etc but with that beast I'll probably have to get help or just move it once and leave it. I know they have a bass processor thing on the sight that will do an auto optimization for your room (and it was co-developed by my fav auto setup company Audessey) so I may just purchase that instead of moving that thing around. But if the pics and videos still don't do the size of the sub justice then.....I'm a little worried because I sorta wanted to get two of them. I've been reading up on sub placement and most folks recommend at least 2 subs....some even recommend 4.......2 will be enough......but I don't want them to be the only furniture in the room. I guess I should just get one and see how I like it. How do you like yours? Is it in a corner? What bass mode are you using? 15hz? 20hz? Sealed mode? Did you get the Sub EQ thing? How easy was it finding the optimal spot? I was just wondering bc the EQ thing is an extra 750 bucks so if the sub is easy to setup without it then I'll probably skip that purchase.
  7. Its possible that could have happened. No it doesn't sound bad at all. The processors in our receivers do a great job of "creating" surround from the Netflix stream without making it sound like it was "created" I mean if I hadn't set the mode myself I would be convinced that they're streaming 5.1 dolby or something similar. I watch a lot of TV shows streaming and the surround sound is pretty impressive on 24 and Lost(with the forest sound effects. bugs, rain etc) and Nip Tuck etc. So I can't wait until Netflix offers the true surround sound streams. I'm surprised they hadn't already already started offering those streams because other streaming services (Amazon, Vudu etc) offer full Dolby Digital. I'll have to look it up and see if I can find a date. I remember reading about their plans to offer Dobly Digital streaming back in the spring.....so it should hopefully be getting ready to launch soon. When I read your post I was a little excited and thought they had finally started offering it. But I'll let you know if I find a launch date
  8. Thank you and I agree. The 61 seems to be the much better speaker for the setup. And I have some crazy news. I know it hasn't even been a week yet but I have been playing movie after movie on my 61s.....which has led to some long nights and some sleepy days at work.....but I have to admit. The highs seem as though they have settled down a little. Not that they were bad before. The crossover of these speakers impressed me right away.....but the highs seem to be a little warmer now. Thats the best way I know to describe it. A little warmer and settled......now is this speaker break in.....or have my ears become accustomed to the horns? I really don't know either way. Maybe I've lost a little of my hearing from watching so many movies. But I just wanted to give that update. I also posted pics of my setup. They look terrible but I wanted to post them since I said I would. They should appear once they are approved. (i didn't realize they had to be approved. When I posted a reply with the pics in this thread it said my post would show up once approved by the moderator. So I guess that'll be Monday) so hopefully Monday you guys will actually be able to see my setup. But I'm about to watch another quick movie and then read Home Theater Mag.....I just subscribed to them and Audiophile and Sound and Vision to read up on the latest and greatest speakers. A lot of that stuff is going into 5 digit territory as far as price but I can dream can't I? lol.
  9. Yes the streaming HD looks really good. I haven't found any 5.1 movies yet though. Netflix had said they would offer them soon but for right now my receiver still shows that it simulates the 5.1....with DTS Neo 6.....in my opinion that sounded better than the Dolby Pro Logic. What movie did you watch? I may have to check it out. Nonetheless the quality of the HD movies and sound is pretty amazing. And Netflix is always trying to improve so once you start watching a lot of streaming movies they will probably email you some surveys that want you to rate the picture of certain things you streamed.....And I totally understand the 2 at a time.....I'm a movie buff. Had a huge collection of DVDs...but now they're neglected as I try to rebuild my collection with Blu Rays.....my significant other is the same way. She may want to watch 4 movies a month if that. Everyone around me is like that. Even my parents. When I still lived at home they had a pioneer surround system.....it was never turned on unless I turned it on....because I was the only one watching movies....I wish they would have had the Klipsch system while I was there, lol. The exception would be my friends who have Klipsch setups.....and even those guys don't watch as many movies as I do. They prefer to game. What can I say? I love going to other worlds even if it is for a couple of hours. I guess thats why I love books so much. Was going to get a Kindle but that got sidetracked as well for the speakers....but alas I'm going off topic. I think I'm about to pop in King Arthur before I hit the sack. Just finished watching Avatar again. After talking about it I had to watch it and turn it up. lol.
  10. Yes BD disc are a little different but its an improvement. I love the popup menu feature. It allows you to select chapters and change the sound etc without ever leaving the movie. It just pulls up a popup overlay at the bottom of the screen. Not to mention some movies have PIP for the special features so that you can watch the movie and the "making of" featurette for that particular scene at the same time. And since you have wireless BD Live is also great. It automatically downloads updates for the movies and allows you to get extra content for the movie and do other stuff like chat with other folks or create your own commentary for the movie etc. And wireless is great for the player too because firmware updates are so much easier to do when the player does it automatically. (compared to going online and downloading the firmware to a flash drive and then doing the update yourself) It may seem like alot to take in but you'll find your way around. The best way is to just explore the special features menu.....and your remote should have a "popup menu" button too so explore the special features during the movie, lol
  11. I took the plunge to blu ray last year. Its great. I also have netflix. I do alot of streaming for tv shows. I just upgraded to netflix blu rays back in march tho. I hated the small increase in price at first but its worth it. The blu ray sound will definitely sound better because the two popular sound standards are lossless. Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master.....(which just means they are bit for bit recreations of the master. You hear everything the sound mixers heard when making the movie. You don't lose details like you did with lossy formats such as dolby digital and dts) When I upgraded my receiver my sound improved but once I got some blu rays i was blown away. Some great blu ray movies to try out sound wise are as follows 1. Saving Private Ryan 2. Black Hawk Down 3. The Hurt Locker 4. Avatar 5. Master and Commander 6. 300 7. The Dark Knight 8. 2012 9. War of the Worlds 10. Clash of the Titans 11. Gladiator 12. Ninja Assasin Just to name a few. They're not in any particular order. They're all great movies that put a Blu Ray system through some great tests. With both audio and video. Especially Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down.....both of those movies put you right in the middle of war. Sounds are amazing on Blu Ray.....War of the Worlds can really stress a sound system as well if its turned up....but be sure to crank up both of the war movies. This Is It is also a good test with the music on it and the subtle arena echoes etc, but you already rented that. But enjoy your setup and let me know when you watch those movies on the list. It has to be Blu Ray....not DVD, lol. And don't get the upgrade bug with Netflix. (when i switched to blu ray on Netflix I was so excited it didn't seem like 3 blu rays were enough so I switched to the 6 at a time plan)
  12. I saw some on ebay a few weeks ago. Just do a search for "Klipsch sub" or "klipsch subwoofer" it will be mixed in with the regular sub listings. If you can't find them on eBay then call Klipsch. I'm sure they can get you some
  13. This is the speaker with the grill on.... Alright here are pics of my setup. Wow i didn't realize how junky it looks. Alright as you can see I have a PS3, Polk Center with dual 5.25" Woofers and a dome tweeter, a XM Radio Receiver and the cable company DVR on top and a Pioneer Tivo DVR on the bottom (thats everything on the second shelf left to right) On the bottom shelf I have a hard drive where my Xbox 360 used to be (it kept getting the 3 red lights of death. This last time was the 4th time it broke. I was tired of sending it in so thats when I converted to Playstation. I do plan on buying the "new" 360 soon....got sidetracked by my home theater upgrades, lol. Next to that I have a Samsung Blu Ray player on the bottom and a digital cable box on the top. The box feeds the signal to the Tivo....I had to turn it because I don't care what I did to block the IR window my remote still controlled both cable boxes so the only way to keep it from being affected by the remote was to turn it on its side.....Next to that is my Onkyo Receiver. On the top shelf I of course have the RB-61 IIs and my Samsung TV. I said it was a 42" but its actually a 40" Nonetheless as you can see the speakers makes it look like a 13" TV....On the left is a Roku box. On the right on top of the speaker is a bear purchased by the significant other for me. It helps with the WAF, lol. On the floor on the left is an APC Battery backup with AVR. If the power goes out I can safely shut down my DVR and save my game and shut down my PS3. It also comes in handy for protecting against brownouts etc. We had a few of them this summer. I would've lost more than a few games if the battery backup hadn't saved me. Behind the TV i have some random stuff.....the Tivo wireless adapter, XM Antennae, Digital TV Antennae, (in case the power goes out and I need to quickly check the weather or something I can watch the local channels and see whats going on. At least until the battery goes dead.) Micro Fibre cloth for cleaning the TV and two charging stands. One for the PS3 controllers and one for the 360 controllers. I also have pics of the 61s compared to my old Sony Bookshelf speakers. And I have a pic of the speaker with the magnetic grill on it......I hated it at first but I guess I had to get used to it? It doesn't look bad anymore. I sorta like that laid back "classy" look......but I love the aggressive manly look without the grill.....also have a pic of my Sub 10. yes I know its dusty. I've been so busy at work I haven't had a chance to dust it lately. I'm going out of town next week but when I get back I think I may take a mini vacation and relax at home. Now as you can see my Polk center has dual 5.25 woofers in it. And overall its about the same size as the RC-52. I know the 52 will sound better than the Polk but the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards the 62....I know Klipsch recommends the 52 (thanks for pointing that out to me Youthman) but I just feel like if I'm gonna spend the money to upgrade I might as well go up in speaker size and get the biggest center that will fit on that shelf (the 64 won't fit of course, lol) The Polk is no slouch but at times it does seem to have a hard time keeping up with the 61s....I know the Klipsch will be Timbre matched but I'm worried that the 52 may end up the same way. I feel like I'll have more wiggle room with the 62 but I don't want it to overpower the 61s (but I do like the fact that all the woofers would be matched at 6" and I think the tweeters would be too) As far as surrounds I have some small HTiB surrounds on my side walls. Those will be the last speakers I buy and I may go cheap and get the RS-42s......or the 52s....the 62s are too expensive....especially considering the size of my room. Now when we start looking at a new house I will make sure the man cave is bigger. So maybe I should overspend right now....just in case we find a house with a huge man cave. lol. (I gotta have a man cave because for some reason I feel like once I get the main sitting area setup the boss is going to take over the area while she's at home so she can watch Divorce Court and Lifetime Movie Network....ahh the agony of hearing that stuff play through my Klipsch speakers. They may go on strike, LOL.) But I just wanted to post the pics of my beginning setup. I will post more pics once I straighten it up. And yes thats wrapping paper in the corner. It never made it up to the attic. Lol. http://img46.imageshack.us/i/dsc02143g.jpg/' target="_blank" title="ImageShack - Image And Video Hosting">
  14. ok. I may be interested in it. Let me see what happens with another center. My friend may also have a center (RC-62) I really wanted to get the biggest center that would fit in the bedroom but I know the 52 is good too so if I can get a good deal on it or if I can't get this 62 then I may have to settle. I will let you know though
  15. Yes I understand what you're saying. It probably wouldn't but there's one way to find out. Set your receiver to 5.1.....listen for awhile (play some movies etc.) then set it to 6.1....and do the same. See if you can tell the difference and if you like it.....since you already have it mounted and everything I say use it if possible.......but as I said the best way is to try out both ways..........also call me naive but what kind of fronts are those? I have never seen horns so big. They must be extremely efficient. What brand are those? Can you still buy them? I was just wondering because they look very interesting. I am very wet behind the ears when it comes to hearing and seeing all of the different types of speakers. I still have heard an electrostatic speaker yet either.
  16. I've never heard a horn sub before. Are there any commercial horn subs or do you have to build them? I was just wondering bc if there is a commercial horn sub then maybe....just maybe I can hear it at a showroom nearby. What are the specs of the horn subs? The advantages? Is it pretty much like the horn tweeters? Very efficient?
  17. Alright so your Blu Ray player is capable of 7.1 but is your receiver 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1.....because I can understand that concept if your receiver is 5.1.....and with you considereing going down to 5.1 you already had the right idea. (as far as just hooking up the side surrounds) but does it say what to do if you have a 6.1 receiver? I have to agree, if you have the speakers use them. I wasn't too sure at first because I thought the two rear surround channels were discrete but they're actually mono.....(i knew they were matrixed whenever you played stuff other than 7.1) so it shouldn't matter if you hook up to the left rear surround or the right rear surround (Of course the general rule is to use the left hookup).....but I still think your equipment has an option that allows you to select how many channels you have (the blu ray player and/or the receiver) I just feel if you select the right number of channels it may sound better. Because the receiver knows it only has to send information to one rear surround speaker and not two so the sound may seem more balanced (even though you can easily go set the speaker levels yourself if it doesn't sound quite right) but if the sound is matrixed anyway you can probably get away with just hooking up 5.1 from the bluray and setting 6.1 on the receiver. The receiver will take care of the rest......
  18. Oh cool. How old is it? do you have any pics? (i know i know, i still have to post my pics. I'm getting there, lol)
  19. Lol. I say that every time I upgrade a component. When I upgraded my receiver it was a huge jump and when I upgraded my mains to Klipsch it was another huge jump. Each jump bringing me closer and closer to that theater experience at my house. I'm glad you like your setup. Congrats on the upgrade. I can't wait to get my system setup with separates
  20. Yes 80hz is the recommended THX crossover point. Basically it all depends on your speakers. If your main front speakers can go down to 60hz then you can actually set the crossover to 60hz. Because the crossover is basically the point at which the sub kicks in. Most main speakers aren't that good below 80hz so its best to let the sub handle anything below that. I tried the 60hz setting on my system and lost a little detail because even though my speakers were rated to 60hz they weren't exceptional at it. Would've been fine without a sub but since I had one I changed it to 80hz and when I did everything blended together better. Now the exception to the rule would be floorstander speakers. They can generally do a fantastic job at 60hz.....but most people usually set them to 80hz as well because nothing can handle the lows better than the speaker that was made solely for that purpose.....just like most subs can't handle the upper frequencies that well. Have you tried setting the crossover to 120hz? (i did) well it sounded terrible, lol. So all in all the Hz setting depends on your particular system and your tastes. The recommended setting is 80 but if your mains can handle lower then it may sound better at 60hz. You said you didn't hear any differences though so you are doing the right thing....leave it at 80hz that way you can be sure no "details" are being lost
  21. I'm sorry. I was wrong. Apparently the rear surround channels are mono.....so matrixing doesn't matter. Its gonna play the same thing whether you have the rear center speaker or two rear speakers. So you can hook up all 6 then with no consequence. Hope that helps
  22. Yes I agree. There aren't that many 7.1 sountracks. Yes the rear side speakers do carry more info then the rear surrounds. But yes I would leave the rear center disconnected unless there is a way to set 6.1 on your blu ray player or receiver. That way that speaker can properly be matrixed from 5.1 soundtracks (most common) because if you just hook it up and its set for 7.1 I don't think it'll be matrixed properly and may not sound as good. just my .02
  23. Me personally I would leave the levels alone. I don't think it would make a difference other than higher sound at lower levels (which you already pointed out) I have an Onkyo Receiver with Audessey as well and it set all my klipsch speakers to -12 or -11 and my polk center to -9 and believe it or not my volume also stays around the same range. 45-51 for movies. Cable TV is a little louder so I can usually stay around 40.....I think it sets up the speakers so that they'll be at 75db when the test tones are played. (eliminating the need for a spl)
  24. A ton of speakers , yes, but for Ht only Fortes and a Yamaha receiver and a sub and all the speakers are from the late 80's. And a few other 2 ch setups with barely enough electronics to run them. Not by choice but I had do do it a little at a time also when a good deal would come up. Yes I totally understand. You said speakers from the 80s in such a casual way. Those seem to be the cream of the crop (according to the hardcore Klipsch fans that stopped liking Klipsch with the release of the Reference IV series) so don't try to downtalk them. lol. But imma just be patient and build up my rooms piece by piece. I've been looking for deals on a center speaker. Can't find any even though I find some 82s I wanted in the garage sale section. I have to stay away from that part of the forum because I love deals and if I see the right ones imma jump on them without even thinking twice, lol.
  25. It may be placebo. It may be an actual improvement in sound. idk which to believe but I've been talked out of it again. I guess I'll just have to be patient and see what happens!
