  1. I think about this a LOT, and I’m not sure why,,,,,,,.

Widor – Toccata from Symphony No. 5…..as performed by Kevin Bowyer

    U2 – In God’s Country

Blues Image or Blood Sweat & Tears – Ride Captain Ride

Gabrieli – Canzon Duo Decimi Toni –or- Canzon Septimi Toni No. 2…..as performed by the Cleveland, Chicago, and Philadelphia brass ensembles

As we get older we thin more about in-evitibly meeting our Maker

    Gabrielli on horns is magnifficent

  2. CDs and a Marantz SA-11S2 are wonderful. I tried vinyl now being sold to my generation, and it doesn't have anything on digital. Why would you, or anyone, settle for a sound ceiling of 15 Khz?

Come back when you are interested in music as opposed to khz.

Ever try to play a Paul Whiteman 78 in that CD player? How about an original Beatles R2R release?

If you are interested in khz, go listen to a bunch of crickets.

The vast majority of great music is not available digitally, and even if you are a kid you don't have enough time left before it is. I've a 78rpm recording of "Rhapsody in Blue" made 80 years ago that isn't going to get better by being digitized, nor am I likely to see a new digital release with the Whiteman band and George Gershwin at the keyboard.

SN, dynamic range, and khz is the least important thing about great recordings...unless you listen to "things" instead of music.

ou are engajed in a false choice pairadim say that you choos eiher science or music when realite is the one doe NOT nigate the other>>>>>>music is NOT more athentic if OLD or PORELY Recorded>>> > ... .......... .. NOR automaticly soul-less if recorded with full freqencie range

  3. Hey Dave,

Now you have hit the nail on the head,

I record old disc's to tape because it does a excellent job of reproduction . Using a TD124 through a good phono stage and a Tascam R2R is the way to collect music that simply does not exist for purchase and other than the cost of the tape ... it's free.

Finding the old recordings is a big part of the experience and pleasure involved in gathering a collection.

Why not you just play the records and avoyd the middle-man (this caise the open reel} in its' entirtie

  4. Not cheap but there are new high fidelity RTR recordings available today from the tape project. They are recorded 15 ips 1/4" tape on 1/2 track. Listen to a master recording in 15 ips and never go back. The link below is a review of "tape project" offerings.

hey're only THREE HUNDERD DOLLARS atape each!

  5. Frank Sinatra's Live at Sands and Harry Belafonte's At Carnegie Hall come to mind... These are four track tapes. The Frank Sinatra is at only 3.75 ips speed even...and yet they are stunningly good.

  8. Do you travel regullar circut?

Not really but I do try to hit the local Goodwill, Salvation Army, thrift stores, and pawn shops. And yard and garage sales. My wife and youngest daughter also manage to find out when the Goodwill is having 1/2 off day and we'll often hit 2 or 3 of the Indianapolis area Goodwills (about an hour away). Also thrift stores and pawn shops where we go shopping for other things or our daughter plays basketball.

Are pawn shops safe to go in I have never tried one kind of looser hang-out?

  9. Sure do appreciate all the help you guys are giving but it's all pretty much Greek to me. Still not sure what I will do with this thing, maybe buy some pre-recorded tapes or record a bunch of favorites, don't know. If no one has anything they have and want to get rid of them is there some place to purchase a good machine at a reasonable price and been checked out by someone who knows what they are doing.

Mikey, thanks for the offer, I am finally getting rid of a lot of stuff that isn't serving a purpose around here. Chris will be picking up the Belles soon and that wil be about it. Almost hate to get rid of the Belles, with the changes, they rock.

    Cigarbum

Nestalgic feeligs to satisfy is vallid but>>>>>>WARNING DOCTOR SMITH most pre--recorded open rel tapes are retchid quality >>>>HI speed dupes and most later one at 3 3/4 inch per second>>>>>>>early two tracks another story but costy and by now fifty year old brittel break then what do you o?

taprecording records is nosense>>>>just play darned record

To repeat......................unless you a libary of tapes to playback, no point

EXCEPT NESTALGIC WHICH IS VALLID BUT COSTLY TO SATISFACTON

  10. Realistically, though, so much music uses peak limiting (some properly, some not) in the recording phase, that to encounter dynamics on most music beyone 60 db is a bit of a rare to non-existent occurence, is it not?

It still can be handled by any Jube or JubeScala (not really a proper term without at least a 402 horn with a TAD or Klipsch driver IMHO) with ease with any good amplifier, so this too much "theoretical" stuff is a waste of time in the real world.

60dB no flipn' way modern erra CD more like 3dB dinamic range
