  1. My new room is 14x32 and here are my plans. I have a 12' wide scope screen that I am installing at the front. I want to build a false wall 6' out so I can install an IB sub. Now my room will be14x26. I also want to recess my front speakers into the false wall. The fronts will be 3 Lascalas. I want my first row of seating about 12' back and on a riser. Then another riser for the second row. I want a third riser for the back of the room for a bar to install my equipment into. I also have a set of Klipschorns I thought about putting in the rear corners for surrounds but hate to waste them in this position. I am now considering 4 Heresy's for 7.1. I don't know where to put the heresy's. I have room for a 9.5' ceiling and am considering splaying it from 8.5 to 9.5. I need 8.5 in the front for my speakers to fit under my screen. I am also considering tilting the fronts back slightly since the seating will be stepped. Where would be the best place to put the surrounds? I thought about recessing them into the ceiling aimed in from the side at a downward angle behind the bar and second row. So where am I messing up? This is in a basement but it is a couple blocks taller than normal.
  2. Sorry to keep going but where do you position the surrounds. My ceilings are 9'. Should I put them at the ceiling angled down or lower straight out? I also have 2 rows so should the surrounds be behind each row? Would you do 7.1 or 5.1 with 2 surrounds on each side?
  3. Thanks guys, I guess I'm on the lookout for Heresy's. Should I focus on Heresy ll's?
  4. Sounds like you guys lean towards the Heresy's for surrounds. The only concerns I have is the ability of the Heresy's to keep up. If the Lascalas are turned way down, is there an advantage of front Lascalas over 7 Heresy's? I like the idea of a 7.1 system but I know the Khorns will keep up with the Lascalas and am not sure about the Heresy's. You guys who have rear Heresy's with Lascalas how do they do?
  5. Here is my dilema. Been working on my theater. It is 14x25. I have a projector and a 12' wide scope screen. I have 3 Lascalas and 2 Klipschorns. Due to the narrow long room and the wide screen I didn't think the Khorns would work in front. I built a false wall and recessed the Lascalas into it underneath the screen. I think the Khorns would be great surrounds buy man do I hate to waste them in that position. I also thought since my room is long I could use 2 pair of Heresy's in a 7.1 set up and talk my wife into putting the Khorns in the living room for music. Another option is to find another set of Lascalas and put them in the rear corners of the room. What do you guys think is the best option?
  6. I was actually thinking of putting the first row on risers and the second row on higher risers. The screen is 60" tall and hanging above a center lascala it puts a strain in your neck looking up so far. The room is 21x 28 completely open. 2 walls are block outside walls and the other 2"x6" with sheetrock on the outside but just boards on the room side. There is a 16" tall I beam running across the middle of the 21' width. On the right side of the I beam is plumbing in the ceiling. All is above the bottom of the I-beam. The bottom of the beam is at 8'4". The left side of the I-beam is completely open up to the above floor joist which are 10' high. Both sides of this beam are 15x12 and completly open. One end of the beam sits on the foundation wall and the other end sits on a pole in the room exterior wall. Hope this makes sense. If I use option 1, I can build a wall under the I beam and have a 10' flat ceiling. At 15' wide the 12' foot screen hits the K-horns and is too high to place above them.
  7. I am trying to start my theater but I am having a hard time. I have a 28x21 area in the basement and can't decide what to do. I already have a 12' wide scope screen and projector. The screen is a Da-lite High Power and the viewers need to stay within the edges to get benefit of the material. Here is my dilema. I have 3 Lascalas and 2 K-horns for speakers. The area has 10' of headroom on one side and 8'4" on the other. The upstairs plumbing is on one side. I kind of like the idea of using the 10' high side and making a 15x21 theater. This would make my 12' wide screen seem huge. This would also keep the seating inside the screen edges. I would use the 3 Lascalas in the front under the screen. Since this raises the screen pretty high I would put 2 rows of seating stadium style and angle the Lascalas up towards the viewers. I would use the K-horns in the rears( I hate this idea) and they would work great because of the way they disappear into the corners. This would be a cozy room with seating for 8-9. Option 2 is to use the entire 21x28 area. The ceiling would be 8'4" on the front half and then slope up to 10' at the back. I would use the K-horns and one lascala at the front. The seating would be 2 rows stadium style. They would still need to be inside the screen edges for best picture. This causes a lot of wasted space. The only advantage is the K-horns up front and a bigger room for them to open up. I have 3 lascalas in the living room which is 15' wide and the screen hung from the ceiling. It is a pulldown and I will build a fixed frame when my room is finished. I was planning in the larger room but after watching this screen in a room where it takes up most of the front wall, I worry it will look small in the bigger room. HELP I need to start soon. Oh yeah I would use the rest of this area as a spare bedroom.
  8. You're exactly right about thet song. Feeding my Klipschorns about 100 watts during the first of the song where the volume builds, makes most people want to get up and run out of the room.
  9. I am running 3 Lascalas in my living room until I finish my theater. My reciever has lots of multichannel formats. When listening to music, I still think 2 channel sounds best. Is this normal or do some of you guys prefer Logic 7, DPL II, 3 ch stereo, Neo 6 or anthing else. It just seems more natural on plain 2 channel. I also like the way the Lascalas sound with a sub. After I listen for a while with a sub and turn it off, the Lascalas sound like there is no woofer in them, but if I listen without a sub for a while and turn it on they sound bloated and unatural. What do most of you guys prefer for music? My room is 15' wide and 30' deep with the 3 Lascalas across the 15' width. There is a hall and large openings at the back so this is the only way to use this room.
  10. I recently brought my Lascalas into the living room to get them out of the way for my basement construction. I also have Khorns in this room. This is the first time I have listened to them in a couple of years and my first thought was they sound like Jubiles. I listened to a set of Jubiles at someones house and my first impression was they sounded great. After going home and turning the Klipschorns back on they really sounded different. It has been a while and I may not remember correctly but when I turned on the Lascalas I immediately remembered the Jubiles. Now I'm not saying the Lascalas sound as good as the Jubes but they have more of the character of the Jubes than the Khorns do. I thing the base of the Khorns make them sound different. Anyone else feel this way or has it just been too long?
  11. The midrange in one of my Lascalas keeps cutting out. I have 3. I had these in storage for a while and when I got them back out and hooked them up, one is acting up. The midrange quits working and comes and goes. I switched the drivers on two of the midranges and the problem stayed with the same speaker. I checked all the wireing and can't find anything loose. It wouldnt play at all at first so I hooked the wires directly to the midrange and it began working. Then when I hooked back up to the full range input everything worked, but while I am listening to them I can here it go out every once in a while.
  12. Thanks for the replies, I want to get this room right. Hopefull it will be my last build and I don't want any regrets.
  13. When I play my Khorns, the plugs which connect the upper cabinet to the lower, vibrates loose. I at first thought I had blown the mid on one, but found the plugs were barely engaged. After I reconnect them it only takes about 5 minutes of high volume for them to loosen. What is the proper repair. They seem to fit fairly tight but it is a fairly hostile environment behind the speakers at high volume and the plugs won't stay in.
  14. Hey Coytee, next time you are coming my way, drop by. I would love some advice and a second opinion from someone who has a clue about this kind of stuff. Among my friends, I am the expert so you know the trouble I am in.
  15. I am really struggling with my room design. I have it framed 21'wide x 28' long. I have been using my projector on the weekends in the living room. I have a 120' fixed frame screen that we set on two end tables to watch movies. The room is 15' wide and I have my Khorns in the corners on each side of the screen. The screen is about 1' in from each speaker. I took the screen down to the theater to see how it would look and it looks so much smaller down there than it does in the living room. I know the Khorns will sound better in this room but my image will seem smaller. I can narrow the room to improve the percieved screen size but it will be to the detrement of sound. I am building a false wall at the front of the room to put my center Lascala into. It will take about 3' of the length. I could also put the Lascalas I was going to use as surrounds into this wall and have 3 front Lascalas. I would then use the Khorns in the rear. I also hate the idea of using Khorns as surrounds because I love the way they sound and can only imagine how they would sound in a proper room. Which would make my screen seem small. Around and around it goes and I don't know where to stop it.Oh yeah I can't use a bigger screen, 120' Is the largest that will fit above my center Lascala and the ceiling. My wife says once the theater is done the Khorns are out of the living room, HELP!!!
  16. I have alot to consider. We generally watch movies as a family and the kitchen is above the theater, so I really don't know how much isolation is necessary.
  17. I have the 3 Lascalas sitting in the basement right now, The Khorns are in the livingroom. We use our projector and a wall between them for movie night for now but my wife says once the theater is finished they must go. The only wall in the livingroom suitable is 15' wide and probably not ideal anyway since there is a couch close to the left speaker.
  18. Thanks for the replies. I have posted pictures of my previous system on here before. I had the center behind an acoustic screen. The main reason I was thinking rear Khorns is because of the way they disappear into the corners compared to a Lascala. I will have a riser for the rear seating and the heigth of the Khorns would work really well in the rear. Like has been said, I hate to waste them in the rear but they would work out really well there. I probably won't be able to stand the thought of it though. I have heard an IB sub and nothing really compares. This would allow a good use for the cavity behind my front wall. I would build a box to set the Lascala or Lascalas into so I could seal the cavity behind the subs. This large cavity, about 21'x3'x9' allows the subs to play below 10hz. I need lots of help from you guys. I will keep everyone updated on progress. I was considering Green Glue but WOW, never knew it was so expensive.
  19. Well it's time to begin my theater. It will be 21' wide by 26' long. I will build a false at the front to recess my center Lascala into. I am also considering recessed L&R Lascalas. If I do this I will use my Khorns in the rear. I hate the thought of wasting the Khorns as surround speakers but they would dissapear in the back and I could hide my fronts behind cloth. I am also considering 4 18" subs in the front wall setup as Infinite Baffle. Another issue is my ceiling construction. I have over 8' of clearance overhead and above that is plumbing. I will need to drop down about 16" from the joist.I have heard a suspended ceiling is not ideal acoustically. To sheetrock will take lots of frameing. I considered a room within a room but I dont think I can span the 21' width. I need lots of help, any ideas about ceiling construction, Khorns in the rear or anything else.
  20. My experience with tube gear is somewhat limited but is this. I have K-horns and Lascalas. I tried two tube amps on the K-horns. One was a 5wpc and the other was a 100 wpc Carver. My friend paid $4000 dollars used. The 5 wpc amp sounded different. I had a Technics reciever at the time. The tube amp ran out of steam too soon and the sound changed as I approached my normal listening levels. As I got into home theater I bought a Harmon Kardon 7200 which I really like. A friend wanted to hear his 100 watt Carver on some horns. To be honest, in two channel mode I really could not hear any difference between it and my HK. He thought maybe it needed new tubes because he said they burn out. After learning about all the maintenance these require I really don't think I would bother with tube gear. My HK is five years old and sounds the same as new without being touched. Tube gear deteorates with each use. My 2 cents.
  21. I am still a few weeks away from move in date on my new house. I will have an unfinished basement and have an area to use for the theater. I should start room construction for my theater by spring. I had a center lascala behind a screen at my old house and it was great. Once the room is complete I'll be ready for some help. I heard Coytee's Jubilees and they are very impresive. Now I know where he lives maybe I can drag him over. The area I have to work with is 21x30 with 8'6" ceilings. Everything else is optional. I can build any size or shape room in this area and have any layout I want. Based on this what would be the best no compromise setup? Thanks for the help.
  22. I am planning my home theater right now. My room in the basement will be 30 x 21. I can't decide weather to use my K-horns on the long wall with center and surround Lascalas or three front Lascalas with K-horn surround. The Lascalas sound better on the short wall to me due to the fact I can toe them towards the listening position. I would also build a fabric wall in front of them to hide them and mount my screen on. The K-horns would also hide in the rear corners much better. If I use the K-horns up front on the long wall, they will be apart far enough to image well but I don't know if I would like a wide theater room as well as a more typical layout. How different do you guys thing these two setups will sound? I am leaning towards the Lascalas hidden up front I just really hate the thought of wasteing k-horns in the rear.
  23. Done deal, I'll give you a yell mon.
