  1. I find that using a few drops of wood glue into the pre-drilled mdf holes reduces the chances of stripping the threads......it acts like a self healer Sounds a lot simpler. So do you do this with newly drilled holes or can it be used after disasembly? Also how do you box in the statement or question you are replying to? It makes it easier to follow what you guys are refering to when I see it done. I would like to be able to do the same. Thank you, John
  2. I've heard that MDF is prone to strip screw holes if you have to disassemble and then reassemble. If having difficulty, Google <striped wood screw repair insert>. You can drill oversize hole for repair insert. If worried that insert will be too close to edge and chip MDF you can drill large enough hole to slip insert into, place metal bolt into hole so it is flush with end of insert, use a nut to lock metal screw in place, tape end of insert that is going into hole, use good glue, epoxy or whatever you know will hold insert. Use bolt to turn insert into hole. Then keeping bolt from turning, back locking nut away from glue, careful not to get any glue on bolt. Then when glue is dry remove bolt. Then reassemble with bolt/metal screw. Try on a scrap piece of wood to perfect tecnic so you are comfortable on speakers. On past projects repairing holes in metal such as door hinges on pickup I have had to place one bolt into hinge, then drill another hole that overlapped 1st bolt, to move hole due to bent hinge that I cold not repair. I never use Heli coils anymore, just drill for oversize hole. Tap for larger bolt, then drill larger bolt to tap for original size bolt. If concerned that oversize bolt won't stay, you can drill smaller hole that intersects the threads, tap and place small bolt, then grind flush if needed. Much less expensive and has worked well for me several times. You can even build your own insert for using in wood by tapping a piece of round stock metal, or threaded stock that can be obtained at most hardware stores. I have even heard of fixing cracked Tractor engine block by interlaping a series of bolts. Farmer saved the cost of buying new engine, or at least engine block. (I ramble, but you probably know that by now).
  3. I want to Thank everyone for their suggestions and opinions. What a list of albums to choose from. Other threads to follow and all! Again, Thank You All! John
  4. There's a very fine line that separates genius form crazy person. Sometimes I think you may have one foot on each side. ..../..... I work on a Psyc unit and am sure we all have one foot on each side. I have to check my pocket for keys come end of the shift. Locked unit.
  5. Such fine looking kids/family. Beware, they grow up before you know it. Love always and let them know, even when they make mistakes. I've told my son and daughter if I had it to do again, I would do some things different. Can't be perfect, but spend as much time with them as you can.......
  6. Was at CD store today and wanted to buy music which would allow me to compare base on different recievers and different speakers. Salesman took me right to the rap selection. I would prefer something that I can enjoy. Prefer not to listen to Rap or Disco. I do enjoy Rock, Country, Blue grass or most anything else. Suggestions would be welcome. Willing to make list and try a few, 4-5 albums, or maybe more. Thanks in advance, John
  7. I did not mean to kill the thread
  8. Must confess my ignorance. I have been attempting to post an avatar most of the day. I got tired of the shadow picture, and now have a red "X" instead. I did print up the instructions for posting pictures and was able to post one sent to me. Also learned to place pictures on computer, now need to do more. Any help would be Greatly Appreciated. Thanks in advance. John
  9. Neighbor saw 3 of these in her front yard last spring. If anyone would be willing to hold one, I'd be willing to do the branding. Suggest you wear gloves!
  10. I just went and looked at the turntable pull out on entertainment system downstairs. Basic plywood with trim and slider attachments on the sides that are simular to what I've seen at Home Depoe. Seems substancial enough and appears not to sag when extended all the way out. The ones on my entertainment system do not appear as heavy duty as the ones I've looked at in the store, which I'm certain would support Turntable. Have been wondering if the ones in the store would support 50-60lb receivers. Hope this helps, John
  11. I've found Sansui to be good with all the speakers I've tried them wilth, limited by the speakers of course. Let us know if you get them
  12. Nope, Even have wife broke of putting things on speaker. No more house plants, nick nacks. Nothing sits on speakers, not even the cats. But seriously, how does the density of the base cabinets affect the folded horns, if at all? Is Hard wood Better than soft wood?
  13. Out of ignorance, I ask. What would be the results if scraps from marble or granite counter top were to be used? Solid pieces for the base bin?
  14. Have La Scala speakers at my son's house. I know, should have them at home, but nice to give a little. Besides, he does not have to deal with "Wife Factor" and can turn them up a little with Pioneer SX 950 from time to time. Question is what info can be provided from stamped numbers in wood? #1 = 7P215 #2 = L9R449 I know this info was gone over before, but I can't find it. Can't read most of the stickers on the back, except for what was printed prior to filling them out. Thank you in advance, John
  15. Fan on Natural gas heater. Could not get to rear motor bearing. Sprayed the $not out of it with motorcycle chain lube. Took care of low rpm problem, and it's been at least a couple years now. Lot cheaper then last motor, or the one before. Come to think of it, that lube, at $9/can has been used on a lot of things besides motorcycle chain. What am I saying? Not a motorcycle forum. Oh heck, 13 year old nephew took 1st in his class last week. Racing less then a year. Runs a mean back hoe too.
  16. Well, I got the MC30's and Lafayette master controler/pre amp. Business where I've bought several pieces of equipment wanted to see the Lafayette. Stated they had sold a lot of equipment but had never seen one. Said the Lafayette has different adjustments for different record company formats. Seems at onetime they could not agree on which format to use, so this controller has switches for each format. Whatever, I don't have records. But the mc30's and Lafayete are in the shop for tune up, or whatever they need. No scratches on any of the equip. Picked up a Sansui 9090DB. Have to find something like AA for stereo's. Running out of room. Maybe a rack system with master switch so I can switch from system to system. There I go, rambling again. I do enjoy the other posts on this site, love to just check it out, learn a little.
  17. How about Heritage option that is not MDF, Have daylight basement and every few years we get a massive rain, or broken pipe. Would hate to ruin beatiful speakers. My other option is to build stands that will keep them off the floor. Probably not the kind of question/answer you are looking for. Could non MDF be arranged?
  18. I have attempted to send each of you gentlemen an email, but don't know if it worked. Thus will attempt to post here and if not sure, will re write a response. If one of you would be kind enough to let me know if email was recieved it will increase my knowledge of copy and past on this site. I spoke with the gentleman whose Father in law has these tubes. Approx 1/2 bedroom full of boxes of tubes still in their original boxes as I understand. He used to do repair work on tube Hi Fi equip and Ham radio as I understand. I gave instructions as to how to find site, and this posting and need to join site in order to post. Also asked that he keep me informed. I will probably need/want some tubes myself. He seemed to think his father in law would enjoy the interaction with trading in the tubes. If neither he or his father in law want to post on the site. I would feel like I would finally be able to contribute by being a go between. All I have been able to do so far is ask for help and advice, which others have been kind enough go give.
  19. He works midnight to 8:00 am. I will call him tonight and ask if he has home email and is willing to do an inventory. We are located in Oregon.
  20. Gentleman at work stated his Father in law had a collection of Tube. Shelves, or room full as I understand. I know zip about tubes, but if someone knows if ham radio tubes are interchangeable with tube stereo tubes I would be willing to ask if he wants to sell some. He said someone should be able use them, so he might be open to do business. I will question him about it, and forward info on how to get hold of him if he wants.
  21. Well I went and looked, went to bank, don't do checks, then brought home Mcintosh mc 30 and Mcintosh mc 30 Kit. Look like new on the outside, no scratches, pitting, faded paint, perfect appearance on the outside. The decals appear 100%. The Kit however shows signs of heat below power tranformer. I hope it's not serious. When I came back with the $$$ Dennis had found the pre amp that he had built and used with the units. He didn't seem impressed with it and threw it in for free. (Lafayette stereo Master Control Center). All must go to the shop for check up. I'll still be on the look out for matching pre amp. However the tax man hit us harder then expected. Have to wait a little longer to get custom heritage speakers. Cornwall or LaScala in Redwood Burl. Suggestions as to which is best for these mc30's? Probably the more expensive ones. By the way Amy said they expect to continue business as usual under new ownership. I hope so.
  22. Looks like I'll have to take my time on this. Pre amps seem to be going for more then the amp. Going to need a bigger box when I go, just may have to take some equipment with me.[] I will be on the look out though. Going to have to turn the downstairs into Music Cave.
  23. Neigbor has Mcintosh mc 30 and mc 30 kit. He has been trying to sell these to me for a while. I finally asked about them and he hunted them up, cleaned them up and wants me to come see. Dave Shekleton expressed intrest in these and I suggested to Dennis that he might get more from Dave then I can afford to pay. He expressed no intrest, and did not even take dave's phone number. He has given me more equipment $$$ wise then what he is asking, so I guess I'm stuck. Does anyone have suggestions on what to use for pre amps for these? I have thought of just hooking them up to CD player with adjustable volume and graphic equlizer but don't know if this is wise. They will certainly go to the shop before I power them up. Oh, Dennis said he has wiring diagram and owners manual. Sorry Dave, but if things change, I still have your phone #.
  24. [8] Tom Williams(Catrafter) it is gentlemen. Estimates fair price, 3yr wait instead of 2yr, but who knows. Also willing to do my 2325. I don't want to take up all his time, so I'll look for someone to do the others. Marantz: 2270, 2285B, 4270 stereo-Quad reciever. Sansui: 9090, G6000, G7000. Plan to pickup Redwood Burl Cornwall's when finances allow, but Maybe La Scala's instead. [*-)] Marantz 4270 Stereo-Quad Receiver
  25. A friend and I were talking of the plus and minus of different speakers, Such as Cornwall with lower base, and La Scala with better midrange. The conversation soon turned to whether or not the differences of sonic output would compliment each other, or leave the quality somewhat less then optimal? Not something I have to worry about soon, but would be interested in opinions, or observations or those who may have heard such setups. Thanks again guys.
